Teen killed when distracted highway cop slams into car

ORLAND, Calif. -- A California Highway Patrol officer was looking at his computer while driving when he crashed into a stopped vehicle in Northern California Tuesday, killing a 15-year-old boy.

According to CBS Chico affiliate KHSL-TV, the teen was a passenger in a Hyundai Elantra that was stopped in a construction zone on Interstate 5 near Orland, about 100 miles north of Sacramento.

Authorities said a CHP officer driving a mobile road enforcement truck down I-5 was looking at his computer but didn't notice the stopped traffic ahead in time to avoid a crash.

"When he looked up, traffic was slowing and coming to a stop, applied his brakes and rear-ended the vehicle that was in front of him, which subsequently got pushed into two other vehicles that were stopped," CHP Sgt. Tony Odell told the station.

Will the police officer be charged with manslaughter or negligent homicide?

A civilian would be in jail without bond.

3:09pm...We are above the LAW.....

Do as we say not as we do! And to answer your question. No! All my brother n sisters in blue will help me figure a way to blame the kid! Then we will scream that we need more leeway to do as we seem fit.

Under no circumstances, anywhere in this country, would anyone be held without bond for this. Sure it was the cops fault, maybe he will, or maybe he won't be charged. Fatal accidents happen daily and not every one is a manslaughter case. Get over your hate.

4:34: if I killed someone while looking at a computer or phone I would most definitely be charged with manslaughter, unattentaive driving, wreckless endangerment, at a minimum! And last i knew as a civilian, any crime that leads to a death could be murder! Just depends on how big a chubby the state has against the perp. So your right. Not every is charged in these cases. Just depends on who you know an who you blow. Isnt that right officers and politicians?

4:34 PM - Accident !?! The cop was looking at his computer. That is negligent driving.

Hate? No, just the recognition that police and prosecutors believe that they are above the law.

2nd degree homicide at least. He didn't plan a murder, but he certainly perpetrated one by gross negligence.

Guilty of at least that.

Can you say Nanticoke River bridge, or in front of the Berlin barracks, or St Michaels. I'll give them Berlin on 113 dark clothing at night and all.
Cowboys, you need to calm down and be the man your father was. We need the Police, we don't need them killing us unintentionally.

Cops are above the law. That is a fact.
The government is totally corrupt. It employs corrupt individuals to enforce statutory laws against sovereign people. We the People now serve the government. The cops are there to make sure we serve.

6:45 manslaughter at best. I think in car cameras and computers should go they are a distraction at the very least. While they are at it get rid of the body cams so the cops can go back to kicking the crap out of you libtard democrats. Maybe just maybe a crime alert of a serious nature came across the screen. Cost of doing business. I would not be a cop in this country right now for all the tea in China. Trump train is a rollin suck it up Libtards your day is coming.

7:02... go news for you! I'm more conservative than a squirrel prepping for winter! But not one man should ever be above the next! Lead by example! The way used to do when police were respected and America was great! There is alot of contributing factors to the current collapse of our country and it foundation! Dont for a second think that the government and its thug enforcers arent one of those factors! Cops are just a human as any other man. They make mistakes. And they should be held accountable a any other man. I believe held to higher standards! Police should not have longer leashes but tighter ones! Your a key part to the problem! To think cops should be allowed to just kick the crap out of anyone is wrong! Your a product of conformity! Lost the ability of free thought and true justice. What this country was founded on. What it once stood for!

Stupid comment. Nobody would sit in jail without Bond for a major traffic accident that resulted in a death for negligence. If you really believe that or say that it did happen, please provide some proof.

Giovanni Jones! The dumbest cop to walk the land! While I'm not dumb enough to post my name due to the Leo's love of targeting anyone who speaks against them! You continue to show your ignorance and why you shouldn't be a cop! Allow me to introduce to you the phrase " Wanton"! Here I will use it in a sentence. The cop in question wantonly killed the teenager! It means doing anything that a person knows could result in a death. commonly used in texting and driving cases! Thousands of cases are on file and yet you say no one has ever been charged? Just go away! Stay off this blog! We aren't stupid! We aren't gonna believe anything just because you post your name or a cop says so! Bout time your employment is reviewed before you cost tax payers millions from your ignorance!

And just like that ..... the know it all super cop is silenced! Idk if it's his real name or not. Wasn't Giovanni Jones a looney tunes character? 12:32 is spot on! Many cases of no bond for these types of accidents. And charged just as said. Time you people quit believing the police. The government lies to us every day. Cops routinely lie in investigations. Theyll say anything and their sheep nod and follow. Truth is cops charge people wrongfully all the time due to their ignorance of the law. The prosecution is how the proper charges are brought about. This cop who killed the kid won't never be charged or arrested by another cop. It'll take persistence from the family and an indictment. That's only if the prosecutor is really for the people!
