Dewey Beach officials are searching for new ways to bring money into town coffers. In August, town council is expected to vote on whether to amend the rental accommodations tax, establish new fees for businesses and possibly suspend the town's beach replenishment tax.
Fees for renters
Dewey Beach Town Council met July 15 to discuss ways to improve the town's financial security. One idea would make all renters in Dewey Beach, including those renting year-round, pay a 3 percent residential rental accommodations tax. Only seasonal renters are subject to the tax under current law.
According to Mayor Diane Hanson, some renters have discovered a loophole in the renters' tax. Hanson said some visitors will rent for the summer season, but ask property owners to write them a lease for the entire year so they can avoid paying the tax. Hanson said it is important council research ways to close the loophole in the law.

So the next loophole would be for renters going to another town nearby that has no tax?
