Should not have lost the weight. Was not prepared for this fight at all it appeared. Was worried after watching the last couple of fights that he could be in trouble boxing against better fighters.

Wow, that's too bad. He was really close to the big money fight. Time to get back to work, and have a couple more good showings, them maybe a title shot will come along.

No. This is believable. He's not ready. He's a great kid. He's in great shape. He's not a skilled fighter. His base is too spread out, he's off-balanced, punches are long and looping. And, tonight showed he didn't know what to do when he got hurt. I hope he comes back and gets a better coach, trainer and another opportunity. Good luck young man!!

Any news of Alex's fight?

WOW!!!! I cant believe this. It seemed he was in trouble from the first round, but I just couldnt give up on him. Fernando...u are STILL an inspiration to many. Go get 'em next time! Anyone know anything about Alex's fight?

That's boxing. Almost nobody retires undefeated. People who are considered the greatest of all time Ali, Louis, Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard all lost. Fernando isn't as good as any above, but he can still have a great career and be champion, but only if he allows this loss to lift him up and not tear him down.

Fernando showed tonight that he is not ready for the big time yet. Hopefully this will humble him and make him work harder.

He needed to fight better fighters earlier to make him better and not pushovers to win over the local crowds.

Get back in the gym Fernando and work even harder.

10:34..well said! he has no defense at all.

Well, I think he is a good fighter. He certainly has some things to learn. I liked his interview after the fight, he accepted that he lost and said he isn't giving up. Keep working Fernando, I am sure you will have a shot.

Wow, all these people who are so negative seem to forget that the espn commentators, who just might know a little more about boxing then they do, called this an upset victory by this "better" fighter.

He is not a polished fighter and certainly not a tactical boxer. He cannot take a good punch. As he goes up to quality fighters, you're going to see if this is going to be a trend or if he can step up his game to be able to compete. You couldn't ask for a better person but that doesn't make him a good fighter, boxer, or champion. I doubt he'll win at the next tier of boxers. If he can't beat a guy way down the depth chart "AT 40 YEARS OLD" he just ate got it!!

he ate got it?

10:34 I couldn't say it better, it was a good fight, finally, where most of his are no match for him.

you have got to have one punch knockout power, and fernando does not..

wow, i had no idea there were so many professional boxers that read and commented on this blog! [a-hem].

Anon 7:24 You don't have to be a professional boxer to know that Fernando was in trouble a minute into the first round. Fernando has
won with his quickness, last night
Brewer at 40 was better. For those that thought Brewer was not a worthy opponent they have not followed his career like many of us.

Fernando's chin has been suspect for a while now and last night proved that. Fernando was clearly the better boxer when he threw but the other guy was just bigger and over powered Fernando. I felt if the fight had gone another two rounds Fernando would have won due to stamina. The guy was an unorthodox fighter who used headbutts and elbows to keep Fernando from getting off shots but that's up to the ref to control.

Let's not forget this is a fine young man who may be reading this so let's not blast him needlessly. He does need work, he does need better training, he does need better opponents but anyone who's been close knows what he really needs. A better coach! He's talented enough to get a professional high quality coach in his camp, Chernoff is NOT it. It's not a coincidence that the only known fighters from Main Street Boxing are the Guerrero brothers because of their God given abilities and not the training. This kid deserves the best and I truly hope he gets the best.

A loss isn't the end of the world. It's not a bad thing to be humbled now and then, it keeps you centered and informs you on what areas need critical work. Now World Series Champ, NBA champ, NHL champ, and only one Super Bowl champ has ever gone undefeated through the season leading to their championship. It's a pothole in the road Fernando. Learn from it. Come back stronger, and show these ill-informed naysayers what you can do.

Just my two cents worth - Fernando quit losing weight - you don't need to do that. This is your first loss and you still have a lot to learn and a long way to go so stick with it but eat along the way, please.

fernando put salisbury on the map.... local hero, regardless of fight outcome!!!

Give the man a break--he lost his first boxing match; that doesn't mean his career is over or that he can't learn from this experience and go on to win a championship. For those attacking Hal Chernoff, he spent hours and hours and tons of his own money working with local kids before one came along with some potential. Where would Fernando be without Hal? Where are all the folks that wanted to shake their hands, get their picture taken with them, etc. Be ashamed for any negative comments, people of Salisbury; Hal and Fernando put Salisbury on the sports map more than anyone since the days of Bill Riordan and the National Indoor Tennis Tournament 50 years ago.
