Parris Island Receives First Woman General

For the first time in its 96-year history, a female general will lead the famed Marine Corps training installation at South Carolina's Parris Island.

The Marine Corps says Brig. Gen. Loretta Reynolds will take charge of the depot Friday. The one-star Naval Academy graduate is taking command from Brig. Gen. Frederick Padilla, who will lead the 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan.

Reynolds has been a Marine for 24 years. She's also going to be in charge of Marines' Eastern Recruiting Region, which covers the 23 states east of the Mississippi River. She has been a communications officer and commanded Marines from platoon to battalion levels.

The installation graduates more than 20,000 Marines every year.

There goes the neighborhood. Does she deserve it or is it political. My guess with the current dummies in charge would be the later.Wonder how many people got bumped in order for a woman to be put in that position?

You are being so disrespectful! This woman has served over two decades in the MARINES! They would not appoint someone to a position of this importance just for political gain. She has earned her right to be there. If it was all political why not appoint a woman before now? Kudos to the woman. She must be made of some tough stuff. You all are just hating cuz she could whoop you :)

Get outta town, 11:08. It was POLITICAL. A communications officer?? Commanding what? Are you suggesting that of ALL the Marine commanders who have served on the FRONT LINES in Iraq and Afghanistan, SHE was the BEST MARINE available?? The BEST one?? You believe THAT?? And you don't think that there are political appointments made in the military for political correctness or to "show" they don't discriminate?? You don't think that the Marines, like EVERY government entity, doesn't have to report how many women and minorities are being promoted? And they BETTER have some, or someone loses their job. Come on....get real.

Marines teach tactics and leadership. After 24 years in the corp don't you think a general would know how to lead?

Imclain shows he knows nothing about the Corps and is just one of the uneducated people who try to turn everything negative. I am a prior Marine. This womans record is outstanding. A communications officer who has commanded Marines from the platoon level to the batallion level. They are not talking about a communications person like on the news or some hollywood stars public relations person. Leadership has no sex. The Marine Corps does not promote people because they have to. They promote the best and those that deserve it. Yes many things have changed about our government and some things have changed for the worse. The Marine Corps has not!! This woman is well respected by her fellow Marines. What do you do?

You people are so negative. I am sure you naysayers have never served in the military let alone the US Marine Corps! I am happy for her and proud of our Corps for making this happen! And look....it only took 236 YEARS!

It's about damn time!

I NEVER heard a Marine refer to himself as a "prior" Marine. LOL...

Seems like more feminisation of the corp to me. Agree with Imclain earlier posters wording of 'prior marine' certainly doesn't sound quite right.

That poor widdle woman marine could whip most of your asses. I would follow her into battle before any of you wussies that only watch movies and THINK you could do something.

You'd be pissing in your boots. STFU and show some respect.
