Couple Arrested At U.S. Border For Asking Questions

In another perfect illustration of why the U.S. tourist industry is in free fall, audio has emerged of a Canadian couple who were interrogated and arrested by immigration officials after they dared to inquire as to why they were being asked such pointless and invasive questions.

Attempting to enter the U.S. at the Niagara Falls border, the couple were asked where they were going, to which they responded the Niagara Falls shopping mall. When the immigration official bizarrely demanded to know what shops they were planning to visit, the situation quickly worsened.

After daring to ask why they were being bombarded with such ridiculous questions, they were told to exit their car and are taken inside for further interrogation by another official. When the Canadian man rhetorically asks, “what are you gonna do, shoot me” the officials claim he is threatening them before he is arrested.

I am appalled by what I read and heard on the audio tape. These people were just responding to silly questions being asked by the Barney Fife wannabe cops. This couple just wanted to come into this country to shop at a nice mall in the U.S.

Do you think if this was the boarder in Mexico that the Mexican's would be treated that way? Do you think dark skinned foriegners with towels on their heads would be treated that way? The answer is NO!

These people were innocent "white" people who happened to be citizens from Canada. I believe they were a family, a young couple, because you could hear a young child screaming in the back the entire time from the point they were taken out to their vehicle to the point the doors slammed when they were encarcerated.

When was the last time that caucasion citizens(families) from Canada entered the US to terrorize our country. When was the last time gangs like MS-13 snuck into our country illegally from Canada? How many "undocumented workers" from Canada are in our country? How many Canadians are coming to our country having babies and mooching off our health care system? How many Canadians are breaking the banks at the welfare agencies? How many Canadians are spending our hard earned tax dollars in the form of Food Stamps? How many Canadians are in the US roaming the streets and killing police officers just because they can? How many Canadians have killed Boarder Patrol officers? I will tell you NONE!

That Canadian border is now where the threat that the Mexican border is. The Canadians are our allies and they are at war with us in Iraq and Afghanistan. Are the Mexican's our allies? Hell No!

See what happens when you the democrats allow liberal idiots to run our country. You people need to wake up soon!!

First, we should question the motive and intent of anyone that wears a "wire" on their body when going through a border crossing. One has to wonder if their intent was to cause a disturbance and therefore garner a reaction exactly like this one and make the news.

Second, it is very hard to cast any judgement on this situation with the lack of video of the scene. For all we know they could have had a banner on their car stating "We hate America", which although legal would be an obvious reason to question these people a little more rigorously than normal. I doubt something to that extreme happened but who knows what they were driving or wearing or what items they had visible in their vehicle that could have caused suspicion on the part of the officers.

I think we can all agree that a great way for anyone wishing to cross the border illegally would be to have a husband and wife with a "wire" strapped to their body record the questioning and conversations with border crossing officers in order to develop a strategy to enter illegally. Certainly, if the recording device was found after this man was arrested it more than likely led to him being held longer than usual and more questioning.

What may seem as a ridiculous question to an ordinary innocent person crossing a border isn't too ridiculous when you realize why the police were asking these questions. Terrorists, smugglers, or anyone else attempting to do illegal things often have stories made up to legitimize themselves if questioned. Most come up with broad stories and when questioned with a couple in depth questions they become unable to answer and/or mix up their story which leads to discovering that the entire story was a facade to begin with.

What is very ironic to me is the following; In my opinion, this couple probably wasn't crossing the border to go shopping at a mall. I believe they were crossing with the intent to evade questions, cause a disturbance, and make this audio clip. What is ironic to me is that in doing so they were questioned about their shopping trip in depth and hadn't thought of viable answers to such in depth questioning which led to them being questioned further and ultimately arrested. If this is the case and their motives aren't what they said (shopping) it serves as the ultimate rationalization as to why police should question people in this manner. The couple's intent was something other than they had said and they got caught. Sounds like Homeland Security is doing their jobs quite well.

it doesn't matter IF they were wearing a wire or not. the article didn't state who recorded it btw.

we all know why the 'guards' were asking the questions. the issue is how they acted.

they were arrogant and abusive. they invited the response they got.

there is a thing called discretion. they should learn to utilize it.

just another example of abuse of power and the immaturity of some of those in a position of authority.

you don't need video to discern that from their speech and attitudes.

Are you people who are defending the U.S. border guards really Americans? Boy, how you've fallen from what your founding fathers believed in. Nowadays it seems that everyone believes that if someone in "authority" tells you to lick their boot, you can't seem to get down on your knees fast enough. And so what if the guy was recording the proceedings? You can bet he was being recorded by the border guard apparatus there. He clearly did it to protect himself from any potential malfeasance. Would you be suspicious if a cop wore a bullet-proof vest? It's the same deal...protection.
This is why upstate New York's economy sucks and why more and more Canadians are keeping their money in Canada. You Americans can act as high and mighty as you want, but at least our economy in Canada isn't in the toilet. Have some humility!

Let's face it. US border guards have a well-deserved reputation for rudeness and at times, abusive behaviour. Just google "US border officials abuse Canadians"and you'll come up with over 10 million hits. So are you telling me that it's all made up?! I've experienced it myself on many occasions. Canadians are getting sick and tired of it and we are starting to spend our (more valuable) dollars anywhere BUT the USA.

The audio you hear is not from the Canadian visitors. They were not wearing wired up microphones. The recording you hear is the Customs Service recording.
