ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 24, 2010) – Governor Martin O’Malley issued this statement today following an opinion released by Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler on the recognition of out-of-state same-sex marriages in Maryland:
“I want to thank Attorney General Gansler for his hard work and thoughtful consideration. Having reviewed the 45-page opinion, we will be guided by the Attorney General’s thorough analysis and legal advice on this matter.
“I am confident that the Attorney General and his office will provide all necessary advice to State agencies on how to comply with the law, and I expect all State agencies to work with the Attorney General’s office to ensure compliance with the law.”

Has the definition of marriage been changed yet?
If Maryland voters have a chance to vote on this, will some judge overturn it like in most other states. Has the will of the people been completely denied and outlawed?
I believe homosexuals should have all the rights, but same sex marriage, that term is an oxymoron.
Just who is trying to push their values upon whom?
There is more than one reason Maryland is going down the crapper so hard lately.
Law and rights are 2 different things. Rights do not come from man, they come from God.
Of course Maryland will agree with what most of the rest of the country does not. it is not the people they care about, but money and a certain agenda they continue to push on all of us.
O'Malley is a joke!
I am confident they will do exactly the opposite of the will of the people.
Is Maryland the New California? Will people begin to leave in masses just like CA?
in accordance with all the snow, maybe hell has frozen over.
All levels of government has become such a joke.
Maryland sure is not what it once was.
What about state's rights?
All "rights" go to whomever our politicians believe they should go to, damn the people of this country. I am ashamed of our government.
That statement said nothing of any value. Read it again!
Someone explain to me what my (and my fellow gay/lesbian friends) agenda is, please? I wake up each morning... go to work... take care of my home and family ... pay taxes ... pay my bills... support my community through volunteerism... in short, all the things that heterosexuals do. Explain to me why me being allowed to be legally married is going to cause some type of hardship on YOU?
Its about time that Maryland woke up and realized LGBT Americans deserve the same rights as anyone else. Its sad that it has taken this long for a baby step towards equality like this, but it should be celebrated.
6:21; I agree (and I'm not gay). map
Really would have thought more taxpaying folk would be for it... a few facts
1)Most gay couples are double income therefore work just as hard for there money as anyone straight that pays taxes.
2)It is a hard sell to the more "Normal Lifestyle" when you live as a gay or lesbian couple & most of us have to try twice as hard just to not be laughed at much less accepted, or God forbid taken seriously. No law about a legal marriage or recognition of one will make judgemental people not snicker or gossip behind our backs much less to our faces.
3) Please don't assume all homosexuals don't believe in God because there is one part of Christian belief that says we're not supposed to. Very few follow the Bible to the letter. Careful in your glass houses. "Judge lest ye be judged" is in their too.
4)Separation of Church & State look it up it's in the Constitution.
5)If recognized or allowed by law I promise not to flaunt my lifestyle no more than you push yours onto me.
6)There are always people that find it hard to accept other groups based on creed color or beliefs. We really need to work on evolving & not hating...one more thing I would also appreciate if you would not burn any rainbow crosses on my lawn.
You change the definition of marriage as written by God through those who would do his will. In doing so you pervade the value structure this country is built on. The holes in this value structure cause our children to question the moral majority, in short, destroying their compliant nature and turning them into tools for the Devil's work. This harms me by making me accountable for my parenting, by causing me to answer questions that make me uncomfortable and by forcing me to remember that time in high school gym where I looked at another man and had conflicted feelings. If God doesn't want me to have those feelings and I had them anyway, then you are clearly an intolerable temptation which must be fixed.
When it comes to civil rights of a minority the will of the majority doesn't matter. What matters is that it is morally and legally wrong as well as unconstitutional to oppress any minority for whatever reason.
Liberty, Equality, and Freedom
The agenda is (as you already know) to force the country and the world to accept homosexuality as normal, and to have special rights afforded to you as homosexuals.
Homosexuality is not normal. It is perverse and anti-social.
The liberal left has already proved many times that their agenda is anything but the benign, simplistic 'happy chat' that is so frequently presented.
If nothing else, it is about the eradication of Christianity from our society.
How 'Eastern Shore' of all of the backwoods trailer trash who hide behind anonymous comments.
We are no different from anyone else. I grew up on the Eastern Shore just like all of you probably did.
We are not perverse and certainly not less deserving of equal rights than any of you.
I'm sure you all still support lynchin' colored folk and don't want those dang gummed women votin in the 'lections.
Gay people do not lack values. I'm guessing tolerance is not one of yours 9:08? Just because you were raised to believe that being a homosexual is taboo doesn't mean you have to pass on those small minded beliefs to your children and make them ignorant as well.
I'm not going to argue through a blog when I know its not going to change anyone's mind, but maybe some of you negative nancy's should take a step back, look in the mirror, and think about the reasoning behind your narrow minded-ness. Its sad and I wish you all well, but its time to wake up.
Stop hiding behind your religion and maybe sometime take a deeper look into that book you put so much stock into. You might learn something.
No citizen should be treated as second class. Believe it or not a lesbian like me and a hate monger like yourself both bleed the same blood.
p.s. 9:15, What 'special rights' do we have that you don't have? You see, the problem is we are TRYING to get the same rights as you have, not special ones silly. I think your bible thumping so loudly in the background was distracting you from being able to concentrate on reading.
Amen, Casey! What straight society perceives as "special rights" are the rights that they already have. The younger generation gets it, and the 40's and 50's have become acclamated with it. It's all a matter of education. Many people don't realize that if our loved one is in a coma, we can't decide whether or not to pull the plug. It rests on that person's blood relatives, which is very sad. In many cases, they don't know that person's wishes like their partner does. The media doesn't help either, choosing to show the stereotypes, when there are many of us who could easily fit into "straight society." Yep, believe it or not, there are gay guys who like to drink beer, watch football, and are like the guy next door.
there are lots of gays in Maryland and the Eastern Shore married
they are married to women who dont suspect a thing
Sooooo, how does he stand?
In the 1980s homosexuality was considered unnatural and people were referred to counseling. I still believe it is perverse no matter what the politically correct culture believes. Please refer to Romans chapter 1 in the Bible. God has a pretty straightforward comment going so far as to call it sin. This is simply a continuing trend of the break-down of moral values that our once-great country continues to experience. I will continue to fight for the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman. We need to save our country's families.
1221 There are lots of gay women married to men who don't suspect a thing either.
"No government has the right to tell its citizens when or whom to love. The only queer people are those who don't love anybody."
~Rita Mae Brown, speech, 28 August 1982
Im educated enough to understand the topic. I don't want to condone homosexual marriage. You can regurgitate the same rhetoric to you're blue in the face. My answer is no. Period. End of discussion.
