Veteran actor Denzel Washington says his latest role as a dogged defense attorney in Roman J. Israel, Esq. reinforced his belief that black men “can’t blame the system” because we make it “easy work” when it comes to filling America’s prisons.
“It starts at the home. It starts at home. It starts with how you raise your children. If a young man doesn’t have a father figure, he’ll go find a father figure,” the Academy Award-winner told reporters at the Dan Gilroy-directed film’s New York premiere, the New York Daily News reports.
“So you know I can’t blame the system. It’s unfortunate that we make such easy work for them,” Washington said.
“I grew up with guys who did decades (in prison), and it had as much to do with their fathers not being in their lives as it did to do with any system,” said Washington..

I agree to an extent. A lot of young people may not have had fathers but they had mothers and grandmothers, and extended families that stepped in and handed out discipline and direction both. And some can have the greatest two parents doing all they can and still the child takes a wrong direction. I firmly believe by the age of 12 you know the difference in right and wrong, it's who you choose to listen to, and the choices YOU ALONE MAKE.
God bless you denzel. It ALL starts at home both whites and blacks. Put in the work, surround yourselves around people that want more out of life than a drug infested, rap gang banger mentality.
I knew he was more than just an exceptional actor.
Never truer words spoken. I have respect for him and his comment. They certainly will go after him
BLM calls him a Uncle Tom
He is on point with this. The problem is it is easier to blame racism than to raise a child properly. Get off your fuc*ing cell phone, get a job so you are not bored and have all this time on your hands to open your legs to the next guy that pays attention to you. Have some morals and self respect!
