Larry Hogan, Maryland governor, stirs debate over statue removal

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican leading one of the country’s most liberal states, won rare applause from the left but riled some of his conservative base with his decision to back the recent removal of a Civil War-era statue from the State House grounds.

The statue of Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney — author of the Dred Scott ruling in 1857 that reaffirmed slavery and denied citizenship to blacks — was caught up in the rush to topple Confederate monuments after deadly violence at an Aug. 12 white nationalist demonstration in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The politics surrounding the removal of the 145-year-old statue of Taney, who never joined the Confederacy and early in his life freed slaves he inherited, proved as complicated as Maryland’s Civil War history.

Mr. Hogan, who had been opposed to the removal of Civil War statues, called it “the right thing to do.”

For Sue Payne, a conservative activist in Maryland, it was the last straw.

Yep, I'm done with Hogan. Turns out, he's a RINO after all. I predict he will not get past the primary in his re-election attempt.

Sorry I ever helped vote him in
His time is through.

Send the statue to Taneytown.

His politics in office are all slanted towards the next general election, while he neglects the base that he needs to win the primary. If he can't win his own party's primary, he won't be running in the general election. I wonder if he's thinking about changing parties before the next election? I think it would be the only way he could get on a ballot for a second term.

RINO Hogan lost my vote. I might as well vote for the Democrat.

If you are a Republican, then first vote for whoever runs against him in the primary, before you vote for any Democrat.

10:08 AM, I am glad at least one american citizen, let alone someone from Maryland or from the SBY area admitted to helping this piece of crap get into office!!!

I must commend you for that, sir or madam, for having enough integrity to state that you know this guy is failing at this job and at the same time, stating you are part of the cause because you voted him in... I believe you are the only one at that!!! Everyone else wants to play the blame game and denial game and then complain about everything... And they think it is going to fix and solve their problem they helped create!!!!

To fix the problem, you first have to admit there is a problem and then second, you have to admit you helped make the problem before you can begin to fix that problem!!!!!!!

Kudos 10:08

Gonna get that anyway, with or without Hogan. Hogan was a fluke, and only got into office because everyone was voting against anything Democrat in that election....all because of Obama.

Hogan disappoints me. Let's talk about State taxes schools, jobs not statues which cost taxpayers more money. I'm leaving overtaxed Maryland.
