Why people are getting the hell out of the Northeast

Winter is coming for the North.

Last year, three states in the Northeast — New Jersey, New York and Connecticut — landed in the top five places people were moving out of fastest, according to 2017 data from United Van Lines. (The other two states on the list were Illinois and Kansas.) And data from Pew Charitable Trusts found that while people are all about moving to the South (their population grew by nearly 1.4 million people from 2014 to 2015) and the West (866,000 more people), the population growth in the Northeast is “sluggish.”

The Northeastern exodus is particularly acute in many big cities like New York City. Since 2010, more than 1 million people have moved from the New York area — which includes parts of New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island — to other parts of the country.

So why are so many Northerners packing their bags?

The insanely high cost

Data released on Wednesday by personal finance site GoBankingRates.com reveals that the No. 1 financial fear of people who live in the Northeast is that they will have to live in debt forever; the Northeast is the only region of the country that ranked this as No. 1. (The other regions put retirement as their No. 1.)

And no wonder they’re worried. The cost of living across the region is among the highest in the nation and three of the five most expensive states or districts in the country (New York, Washington, DC, Massachusetts) are in the area. (The other two states are Hawaii and California.) Having to spend so much just to get by can make getting out of debt seem much harder. And housing costs and taxes in many of these states are also sky-high.

With the exception of Massachusetts, I understand the high costs in other states. California has high crime with gangs and homeless plus the fact the state is run by moon bats; New York...same thing but with a communist mayor; D.C....well that kind of speaks for itself, THE SWAMP; Hawaii, relies on tourism but a very poor state. I was there in the 80s and while traveling to a tourist destination we passed the ghettos. These states are "managed" by liberals, nuff said.

Maybe if the states legislature would be mindful and fiscally responsible with the yearly budget, taxes would be so high causing folks to move out. Southern states are less populated, get more bang for your buck with cost of living and in some cases its WARMER!

So what happens, eventually the south will be over populated, states budgets will probably break and folks will head north again! Back/forth/back/forth = a vicious cycle for a nation that is only 241 years old.

Global warming and wind mills are better topics to discuss!!!

(snicker snicker)

The majority of the New England states are liberal a holes. Especially Massachusetts. They have this, I am better than you attitude and think everyone in the south are inbreed Morans. I had to work up there back in 2008 and 2009. There are nice people, but the majority of them are very arrogant. Those with a college degree are even worse. I think the culture and the colleges and universities have taught them this attitude. It's a beautiful area, but I definitely would not want to live there because of this.
If you think people are unfriendly and clannish on the shore, you haven't seen anything until you have spent some him in Massachusetts.

They move because of high taxes to places of low taxes then vote for people who will raise taxes. Doug us a favor and stay up north.

Death and Taxes: the 2 reasons, and they are interconnected. Too much tax in those states, and if you die there, there are exorbitant death taxes, too.
9:55 is spot on... for young people who were spoon fed liberal ideals in the universities, think government should take care of things for us.
If they feel that way, why not give all their money to the government if they think the government can do better with it.

I wish they would stay where they came from. They bring their attitudes, liberal beliefs, and problems with them and make like hell for the rest of us who have lived here all our lives. They come here for lower taxes and hopefully a better life, but instead they try to change things and create the same problems here, that they were trying to escape from. Same goes for third world refugees and immigrants who don't want to assimilate into western culture. Don't bring your problems or try to change us to your beliefs! If this had worked for you, you would not be here to begin with. Don't come here trying to change us to your way to thinking!!!

Yep, a bunch of morans (sic).

Baby Boomers are all reaching retirement age. Retirees often downsize and move to warmer places.

Trouble is they are all moving to North/South Carolina, Georgia area. And ruining those states. I have relatives in all three states, who've seen places like Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Wilmington, N.C. go to pieces. Traffic, crowds. It's a real problem.
Also changing alot of local elections. People who've lived there all there life or since say the 80's are Republican. And all these northerners are rich Democrats, and are inflicting Liberal ideals on the people who are the real residents. You've seen it in the transgender bathrooms, and removal of confederate monuments. It's because so many liberal northerners have relocated south.

2:33 PM - Sort of like a new Reconstruction?

If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. It's not the people who live there per se, it's the people they ELECT. And everything has a union, a union boss and they have to be fed.

I'm just curious what is a ghetto? Also, what is your profession?
