We are proud to have fully supported the Volunteer Firefighters and the recent quest to divide Station 1. The Volunteers throughout the County should be proud that their County Executive recognized and respected their situation and offered a way for them to break away from the politics of the City of Salisbury.
Chief Rick Hoppes and Boy Mayor Jake Day tried to give County Executive Bob Culver an ultimatum with their "nuclear option" and it backfired. Hoppes demanded THREE times what the County ultimately said they'd pay and Day crumbled.
There's a new Sheriff in Town Boy Mayor and his name is Bob Culver!

Ha Ha ha.....Culver did a good job helping the volunteers no doubt!!! BUT ole Rick started the ball rolling prior to Bob....and make no mistake, there is only ONE SHERIFF LEWIS IN THIS CITY AND COUNTY!!! I know you probably won't post this BUT YOU KNOW THE TRUTH!!!!!
Speaking of that....
The County and City contract telecommunications carriers like Verizon, ATT and Comcast, etc. The one thing I would like to see our local elected officials do is get our cable running better.
Every business owner I know is having issues with connectivity and slow speeds with Comcast, especially at peak times (after 3 when kids are off school) Most people who are offered VoIP to save money, can't even use it because the internet is so slow. Salisbury is the 3rd largest city in Maryland and there is no reason why we still live like rural West Virginia. You're not going to attract more business if the internet sucks.
Didn't we spend a bundle for a high speed fiber optic cable with a local co-op recently? So, why is our cable still so slow.
Heck, when I go to Baltimore or DC or NYC, my phone get's faster internet than my business pc.!!!
So, Bob , et. al., please, please contact Comcast and ask them to deliver on their promises or work out a better deal. Thanks in advance - a frustrated citizen and business owner.

Rick P gets no credit concerning the Volunteers. Rick P, Barry Tilghman, See and Gordy with their other cronies ripped off the Volunteers when they forced a merger. So don't make someone believe Ricky boy did anything positive as Administrator but spend money and raise taxes / fees.

How are the volunteers being ripped off? All the Salisbury volunteers do is manage money given to them same as every other department in the county. Said volunteers don't wish to use that funding which is tax payer dollars they would rather bank it or waste it on stupid crap. Remember that's the peoples money not yours! Last nights county chiefs vote means nothing so don't get exited. In order for a change SFD chief, Salisbury Mayor, fire chiefs must all agree. Fire chiefs vote is only one and the other two wont happen. How do you think those residents will feel when their insurance skyrockets from the ISO going from a now 2 to a 9? That's a 7 point swing that's going to cost every home lots.
Sorry Mr. Bell but Mr. Culver is the final authority in Wicomico County and he doesn't need the Mayor's permission to set policy in the County. It just remains to be seen if he has the balls to do it. If he backs down now he will lose all respect from the volunteers out in the County. What say you Mr. Culver?

The chiefs association has not and does not set territory. Fire chiefs have always worked out their borders among themselves at to where the lines are by use of a map. Unless Hoppes, Day, and fire chiefs all agree there will not be a change and the first two will not happen. Like it or not Hoppes is the authority having jurisdiction over the Salisbury fire district both city and county portions. It's the Salisbury fire district period so don't get to exited.

Firefighters one step closer to their own station

Volunteer firefighters who separated from Salisbury Fire Department’s Station 1 have won the first step in their efforts to start their own volunteer fire company with its own territory.
The Wicomico County Volunteer Fire Chiefs Association this week agreed to award a portion of the Station 1 territory that lies outside city limits to the firefighters, said David Shipley, the county’s director of emergency services.
The group’s radio committee will still need to decide on a station number for the group, he said.
But the volunteer firefighters still have a major hurdle to overcome: There is no money set aside for a new station in the county.
County Executive Bob Culver said he included money in his proposed budget for fiscal 2018 for paid firefighters at the Salisbury-Ocean City: Wicomico Regional Airport, but not for a new volunteer fire company.
“I certainly have no problem with it, but I’m not sure where the finances will come from,” he said.
Culver has already turned over his budget to the County Council which will hold a public hearing on the proposed spending plan on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The council also is scheduled to discuss the Station 1 volunteer situation at a work session the same evening.
Cory Polidore, the chief of the volunteer company, said he is hoping the County Council will include funding for a new company as a budget amendment. He said the county will be contributing less money to the city because the call volume will drop once the city loses part of the territory, and that money could then be used to support a new volunteer company.
“Our expectation is they will support the decision of the Fire Chiefs Association,” he said. “The council and the executive should rely on the experts.”
A newly negotiated fire service agreement between the city and county sets the amount paid to the city for providing fire and ambulance services outside city limits on a per-call basis. However, it does not address what will happen to the former Station 1 volunteers who separated from the department in February over disputes with the city.
The Salisbury City Council has approved the new agreement, but it still awaits approval from the County Council.
Meanwhile, the volunteers have been offered a station at the airport where the county must take responsibility for providing fire service starting Dec. 1, and Culver has said he is hoping to hire some of the volunteers to fill some of the paid positions at the airport.
Culver has included $300,000 in the proposed budget to pay three or four crews at the airport with at least three firefighters per crew trained to handle fires on runways and planes. The Parsonsburg Volunteer Fire Company will continue to be the first responders for structure fires at the airport.

Jake day won't be relevant much longer. I'm not sure how he pulls off calling himself a military officer but the way it sounds all military personnel will be made to actually serve and not play soldier.
Actually the only reason the city had it was due to having station 1 volunteers. The were recingonzed not the city of Salisbury.
Jake day has no say in territory. If it's the county's then nope. But per the agreement he will come July if it goes through.
