Q&A With Jim Ireton, Salisbury Councilman Weighing Congressional Run

SALISBURY — Salisbury City Councilman Jim Ireton may not be mayor anymore, but if his recent public hints and actions prove to be true, he might be taking on Republican Congressman Andy Harris for the right to represent Maryland’s First District in the US House of Representatives.

Ireton, a progressive Democrat, who became Salisbury’s first openly gay mayor in 2009, has amassed a legion of supporters and critics over the years for his sometimes abrasive style and his proclivity to trade verbal jabs with anyone from political opponents to the various media outlets. But that style may help Ireton take on Harris, who is no shrinking violet himself when it comes to public political catfights.

Ireton has been mum on whether or not he will run, but in his conversation with The Dispatch this week, he certainly sounds like his mind is all but made up.

Q: There’s been a bit of transition in your life recently as you’ve gone from being the mayor of Salisbury to a councilmember in Salisbury. Do you see the position change as a big difference for you, because some people see the change as not a big deal? Some would even argue that you can actually instill more change as a councilmember because you have a vote rather than acting as the sort-of city’s figurehead?

Koch brothers? Harris is against women? Against health insurance?

Geez....he's really spewing out the far left talking points. Don't see how that will work for him.

What an cocky, self centered POS!

Wow, he has a high opinion of himself! no one else does.

He drinks the same Kool-aid that O'Malley and Obama drinks. For example O'Malley is ridiculously still running for President. The polls show that NO ONE is supporting him. His numbers warrant him getting out and to stop wasting money, however his ego and arrogance trumps all rational thinking. Irelton much like O'Malley cannot not be oblivious to the fact that he is not liked. His past record (just like O'Malley's) proves he is not an affective leader. He is delusional out of touch with reality. He doesn not present a positive image and is a divisive person out only for personal gain. Irelton if he runs against Harris will not make it past the primaries. He is not a creditable or stable candidate. He continues to embarrass himself.

I have communicated with Andy Harris' office in the past and they have helped me with a thing or two, but I doubt I would ever contact Liarton's office for anything. But that's just me. I'm sure there may be others who are not 'homophobic'.

Yeh lets send this bumbling incompent fool useful idiot of the progressive left to DC NOT!!

"... The polls show that NO ONE is supporting him."

Incorrect. O'Malley's wife and father-in-law still support him.

I think we need some fact checkers on this man. Also, sucking up to Mathias cannot help your cause. Mathias is a jackass. Love the BS about authenticity of democrats - really made me LOL!!

Anyone besides me sell their soul and read the Independent this week. Another collection of lies. In addition, Mr. Hawkins was spitting out garbage about the republican candidates. BTW- What has Hawkins done anyway? I wish Ireton and Hawkins would take a long walk off the Eastern Shore.

A 1.4% drop in Part 1 crime can mean just one less murder/execution on the West Side that year, or one less rape, or one less bank robbery. It's not saying much.

Voters in Maryland need to wake up and stop lining Government offices with the same old liberal tax and spend. I recently received my Federal tax statement for Unemployment benefits paid in 2015. For $7000 in payments, they withheld $700 in Federal taxes. How can the taxpayers of Maryland sit back and witness their former Governor excusing himself from paying taxes? Taxpayers paid about $62,000 to furnish the Governor's mansion in Annapolis and O'Malley buys that furniture several years later for under $10,000. Getting a $10,000 discount is one thing but he didn't even pay sales tax for the purchase. Even worse, none of that $50,000 saved was even viewed as income. Like Ireton, O'Malley wants to move onto a bigger job with access to more citizen's wallets.

If these guys don't pay the taxes they levy on us, why should we have to pay them?

Ireton would be disaster for the Eastern Shore and the State of Maryland.

Fruitcake, just what MD needs!

First: I'm sure there are other "crazy unstable drunks" already in Congress.
Second: Please Democrats, find someone else to run against Harris.

I just imagine him yukking it up with the likes of Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Nancy Pelosi.

Very disappointed in Bryan Russo. First off, why are you repeating the lie that the mayor's position in Salisbury is that of a figurehead? How many times did we have to listen to Ireton and Barrie Tilghman talk about how the position is a strong mayor?

Able to sleep at night? Ireton used his friends and cast them aside. What he did to his friends Debbie Campbell and Terry Cohen was shameful. Any real reduction in crime was due to Terry Cohen and the police, not him.

And stop with the "openly gay" lie. When Ireton first ran for mayor, he didn't mention it until he had to respond about running from the police in Rehoboth. Not once even then did he mention the word gay. I don't care that he is gay, but stop making him sound like a hero about it. Harvey Milk was, not Jimmy the PR Man.

Service? I know quite a few people who called Ireton and never got a call back. I called Cohen after he never called me back. She even came to my house to talk about the problem and get it resolved.

As a Democrat, much as I don't agree with Harris, I found his office was nice. No one held up an "I hate Democrats" sign the way Ireton did with Republicans. Ireton runs against Harris, Harris will have my vote!

Wish Debbie Campbell had run for mayor. What a better city it would have been.

I will enjoy watching this half wit go down in flames. This will be as fun as watching the omalley train continue to come off the track.

Hope it won't be like 2008 again, I'm kinda having second guesses about this race and also about the republican primary, harris is down in polls and there are projections that it might be his last term, just something to tune into deeply.

Thanks Liarton for that analysis. Must be drunk back from Market Street with your barely legal SU student "boy" friend having a sissy fit in front of your computer because of all the comments! Boo hoo!

Anonymous said...

Car accidents drunk. Running from police. Sleeping with Ryan Hughes when Hughes covered the Ireton administration. Yelling like a sissy at a black female employee. He is perfect for Congress!!

when pigs fly!

He needs to be run out of the school system where he has access to our children.

Anonymous said...

Amen!!!!!! Speak the truth!

And Delmarva Times finally called him out for quitting the first council seat... Lying to them to get their endorsement in 2015. Saying an hour after winning District 4 that he'd run for Congress. The Liarton!!!

Thornton Crowe said...

The assumption here is that he ran for the council so he could keep his foot in politics?

I don't understand why Ireton would run for Congress, does he not realize he didn't do a very good job as mayor? Why would his constituent base feel he was ready for something as magnanimous as Congress when he was so ineffectual in local government?

I realize that anyone can run for a government elected office but come on, he must know he's highly unqualified to fulfill the duties. If he didn't listen to Salisbury citizens (with the exception of the elite few), why does anyone think he will listen to his congressional district?

This fairy Ireton has some nerve.

11:07AM while I agree he has some nerve, this is not about a gay issue, it's about a lack of competency in governance. There is a huge difference.
