STATEWIDE CLICK IT OR TICKET INITIATIVE KEEPS TROOPERS BUSY

(PIKESVILLE, MD) Maryland State Police conducted a 13 day statewide ‘Click it or Ticket’ initiative, keeping troopers busy making sure seatbelts and child restraints were in proper use.

Maryland State Troopers conducted traffic enforcement initiatives from May 18th through May 31st throughout the state concentrating on safety belt violations. During this time, numerous traffic stops were conducted.

During this enforcement campaign, over 4,100 vehicles were stopped for occupant restraint violations around the state. There were 470 citations and 519 warnings issued by troopers from the La Plata Barrack, while troopers from the Hagerstown Barrack issued 269 citations and 325 warnings. There were significant violations noticed throughout Maryland.

High-visibility enforcement such as Click It or Ticket is credited with increasing the national seat belt usage rate from 58 percent in 1994 to the estimated observed usage rate of 86 percent in 2012. This campaign aims to increase the consistent and proper use of seat belts among all occupants in vehicles on Maryland roads.

It is a proven fact, seatbelts save lives. Troopers will continue to enforce seatbelt laws and to educate the public using these types of initiatives. The goal is to develop good seat belt practices. The car or truck should not move until everyone is belted or in a safety seat. Maryland State Police will continue to support the Maryland Highway Safety Office’s ‘Move Toward Zero Deaths’ campaign.

The State is broke they have to do whatever it takes to make money

If they issue ONE actual citation instead of ALL warnings - they can't say it's about safety!

This is another way to take money from the citizens....

Granted, I wear seat-belts for safety reasons - so the chance of getting pinched on this violation is pretty slim....and the folks that don't wear them should be allowed to violate things that keep stupid people from killing themselves......

While we all know that seat belts do save lives there are glaring problems with the use of them being a law.
First of all these laws seem unconstitutional being that they violate the "..secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves.." clause in our Constitution's Preamble. Basically, these laws usurp the freedom guaranteed to us in the Constitution.
Secondly, these laws make no provision for people who cannot wear the 'three points of contact' seat belts that state laws pattern after United States code. In other words, someone with a chest wall injury cannot have their vehicle's seat belt modified to use only the lap belt. The law only gives these people a 'medical exemption' for non-use. It seems to me that partial protection, a lap belt & air bag, is better then none. Yet these laws won't allow it.
They seem to be revenue generating codes only, using 'safety' as their motive of existence.

If it was for our safety they wouldn't allow people to ride motorcycles. There are no seat belts or air bags on motorcycles. How about buses?
