Wisconsin Assembly Passes Junk Food Limits and Drug Testing for Food Stamp Recipients

Any attempt to limit welfare spending sends liberals into an apoplectic rage. Unfortunately for them, in at least one state, welfare recipients are now going to be limited on what they can buy, and will also have to undergo drug testing in order to receive benefits.

Public aid recipients in Wisconsin would be limited in how much junk food they could buy and forced to take mandatory drug screenings under two bills passed by the state Assembly on Wednesday.

“With help from the government comes responsibility,” said Assembly Speaker Robin Vos in a news conference prior to debate.

Republican supporters say that they want to ensure that beneficiaries of public programs are eating health food and staying drug-fee–two things that supporters say will make them more employable.

Under the junk food bill, food stamp recipients would be required to use at least two-thirds of their monthly benefits to buy nutritional foods such as beef, chicken, pork, potatoes, dairy products, fresh produce, and food available under the Women, Infants, and Children nutrition program. It would also prohibit users from using the money to buy crab, lobster, shrimp, and other shellfish.

Because the federal government funds food stamp benefits, the limitations posed under the bill would require a federal waiver that no other state has ever proposed.

Democrats have argued that the measure is a gross overreach and grocery stores have also been wary of the proposal as they would have to install software to track spending by food stamp users–something that could cost up to $55 million.

The bill passed a 60-33 vote, with all Democrats voting against it and all Republicans–save for two–in favor of the measure.

Another clueless ill-thought out law by buffoons who stay in office by feeding red meat to the base. So this is about protecting health, yet you want to stop recipients from eating fish in exchange for beef, pork, and starchie potatoes. Sounds to me more like the Big Ag. donors mixed with half-wit politicians. One trip to the store will show you the fallacy here. You can buy a large back of shrimp in Walmart for $6 and create a meal that will get you atleast 4 servings. Try to do the same with beef. IF you find a pack that is affordable, it's going to be cheap fat-laden ground beef. Yeah, thats the more heart healthy choice for sure.

Want some REAL progress?
Start drug testing the most dangerous group of thieves and public trough feeding criminals ON THE PLANET ---U.S. Senators and Representatives. Randomly and without notice.
A positive test (and there would be quite a few) would result in in immediate loss of job and benefits and a new election.
Talk the talk and WALK THE WALK.
But, as they have proven over and over again, the laws are not made for them, just the serfs and they have forgotten what "setting the example" means a LONG time ago.
We can go straight to hanging them all and save us a lot of time, however.
It going to come to that sooner or later, anyway.
Just keep cheering - their manipulation of you and the slow but sure demise of liberty and freedom, courtesy of the very losers you cannot stop cheering.
They laugh at you every day.

Yes, drug test those who are in a position to harm others if their judgment is impaired due to illegal drug use - politicians. They're hypocrites and they know it.

If a cashier at Home Depot has to pass a drug screen to work there, so should those who work for all of us taxpayers - politicians.

7:53 Fish such as tuna, tilapia, haddock and so on was not mentioned. Only shellfish such as oysters, shrimp and lobster.

Also certain groups are less likely to use a bag of shrimp to prepare an actual meal to serve multiple people, as their busy, stressful lives (looking for work I'm sure) demand simple, heat and eat out of the bag meals.

And yes, six dollars worth of beef will feed more than four people.
