98 Million Americans Are Expected To Travel For The Holidays

More than 98 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles this holiday season, AAA Mid-Atlantic estimates.

That marks a 4 percent increase over last year's end-of-year holiday travel — the period that spans Dec. 23 to Jan. 4 — and the highest holiday travel since 2001. This year's holiday travel period is also longer than in previous years because Christmas and New Year's Day fall on Thursday.

Consumer confidence and low gas prices are helping fuel more travel. The average gas price was $2.55 per gallon Dec. 15, the lowest level in five years and 68 cents lower than last year.
