Senate Approves Ban On 190-Proof Alcohol

Maryland's Senate has passed a measure to ban "extreme-strength" alcoholic beverages, 190-proof or higher, from stores.

The bill, which passed 37-10 on Wednesday, would halt sales of grain alcohol brands like Everclear, Gem Clear and Golden Grain, though Everclear's 150-proof version would remain legal.

A proof of 190 translates to 95 percent alcohol content. That's more than most rubbing alcohol.

Many of Maryland's college presidents requested the ban to help curb student drinking problems. Frostburg State University President Jonathan Gibralter says when grain alcohol is mixed with drinks like fruit punch or lemonade it hardly affects the flavor, making it easy to drink too much.

"...college presidents requested the ban to help curb student drinking problems..."
FINALLY they found a way to control drinking on campus. Why did they wait so long?
That'll work.
Yeah. Right.

On my next trip from MD to VA for my smokes, I think I'll pick up a couple of cases of Everclear and stop by a frat house at the U of MD before I go home. I'll clean up!
(Haven't the intellectuals at MD colleges ever heard of the era of Prohibition?)

Just like 6:41, I think this is another stupid law passed that will send even more tax dollars out of state. When will they ever learn?

They do these things to force you to buy more of something else...to get more tax revenue out of it, bt the idiots refuse to realize it just sends people out of state to purchase goods...outcome is zero revenue....and begins yet another snowball effect....

Golden Grain will just drop from 190 proof to 185/189 proof, people will just drink a little more and the world continues to spin with idiots creating laws that do nothing. After Sandy Hook, Obama promised to focus on mental health, drug abuse and alcoholism falls in that mental health category. If enough people still want 190 proof it will create a black market product that won't be taxed at all.
