Should be done away with. Basic economics describes money as a means of exchange; rather than a pig for a bushel of corn a value for each is converted to money so one can acquire what one needs for value they provided in another form.

Wages are merely a remuneration to reward value provided for labor. The greater the value the greater the wages. When an employer is forced to establish a minimum value greater than the market establishes, either the value of all other workers is diminished or they need to be paid more. When those workers are paid more the forced minimum becomes diminished. It value stays the same, only the number is bigger.

The Reader's Digest version says "You can't legislate people into prosperity".

If raising the minimum wage helps out the poor, why aren't they doing well these days? The minimum wage has been raised many times over the past 40 years, yet many folks claim it ain't enough.

History shows that raising the minimum wage only helps to make everything else more expensive, thus negating any desired results/effect.

You want a pay raise? Then make yourself more valuable to your employer so he will want to pay you more to keep you working for him.

There should be a base level - I own a business and would love to give my girls more - but I can't raise my prices due to the economy and then there is more taxes and believe me you Government does not help the small business owner AT ALL

Just go with the flow and hold everyone back regardless of how they act. No rewards for a job well done... no reward for anyone ...pigeon hole the whole world. Not something that can be answered with a yes or no.

Main problem is all the decent paying blue collar jobs (factory/manufacturing) have disappeared. People who used to work those jobs now are working at retail/fast food and other low paying jobs.
An overwhelmingly majority (upwards of 85%) of these workers rely on one or more type of government entitlement which means tax payers are helping to support them.
Minimum wage would have to be raised substantially in order for these people to exist entirely on their own. Businesses with large profits such as Walmart could do it but the smaller independent businesses wouldn't make it.

I am not sure where you got your data from, but the minimum wage has not been increased since 2009, which was 4 years ago.
That would explain why they are not doing better.
The price of gas in 2009 was 1.84, which makes it double now.
The price of heating oil was 1.60 and it is now 3.60
Increasing the minimum wage is pennies to the big corporations, so to state that prices would significantly increase is simply not true.
Data shows that increasing the minimum wage does more good than harm and in fact most people on minimum wage are on government assistance, so you are simply subsidizing billion dollar companies that do not pay employees a livable wage.
There are also states that have a higher minimum wage than the federal requirement and they are doing just fine.

I managed several businesses that had a large percentage of workers (primarily HS or college aged) at minimum, or sub-minimum (a special provision) wage to start. They got reviews and could increase their rate based on performance. Could and did get real increases.

There were several minimum wage increases in that period. We raised prices to cover some of the higher costs but the bulk of the adjustment came in the form of fewer hours and a smaller staff.

Net effect: an hourly increase but fewer hours of work, and fewer folks getting a job. This is always the case!

Why do you think you pour your own drink at McD, BK or Wendy's? They cut the hours used for that and shifted the labor to you.

Leave it where it is and rely on folks who want more to find a better job. Then employers will bid to get the better workers. It is an imperfect system but it works best for most.

More than imperfect, you have a very flawed strategy.
Cold hard fact is employers do not give a rats behind whether you are living in poverty and want more work for less pay so that they have piles of profits.
Historically hiking the minimum wage showed more benefits than harm and voided the arguments of all the chicken little's fearing soaring inflation.
This is not 1970 any more and facts are that low wager earners are not primarily kids and teenagers, its working families.
Your leave it where it is strategy where employers are fighting over the best low wage worker isn't happening now, how/why would it happen in the future?
Who this all works for is the Walmarts and Targets, paying substandard wages, making huge profits and putting their people on the public dole.
We are footing the bill either way and with food stamps out of control, taxes are simply going to continue to soar. I would rather put it in the workers pocket thru increased wages.
Washington state has a $9 min wage requirement and they seem to be surviving.
Or you can keep spouting the same old rhetoric.

I think people fail to see WHY the government wants to raise the minimum wage. Sure the liberals want to hand out money to those who do not earn or deserve it, but what does that money do for the government? It increases the taxable income of Americans which in turn increases revenue via taxes. Think about it, there isn't a single politician out there that can say "Hey, I'm going to raise taxes" and still remain in office. BUT yet a politician can say "I'm going to increase the minimum wage" and get re-elected over and over again because he/she "gave" something to the low-middle class citizens.

Think about WHO pays for the minimum wage increases. Do the businesses pay for all of it? Of course not! Say they increase the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.00 (38%) and businesses DID NOT lay off anybody and maintained the same staff volume (which is highly unlikely) you better believe that you will see a chunk of that 38% increase on the menu board at McDonalds. Your $6.00 Big Mac meal just became a $8.28 meal.

Think about WHO is affected. Sure an increase in minimum wage directly benefits those seeing instant increases in their salaries, but what about those already making more than minimum wage?? Their wages aren't going up but (if anything, may go down to cover the minimum wage of those lesser) yet their expenses will go up as a result of the increase. The middle class is the consumer class and will be the most adversely affected - Essentially redistributing income and wealth.

So say that the minimum wage does go up. It is inevitable that businesses will lay off employees or cut back hours and benefits will be cut (if Obama Care didn't already take care of that). The unemployment rate will increase and the job market will shrink.

When I first graduated college about 7 years ago, I had to work for $10/hour for over a year just to get my foot in the door of my career path. Through HARD WORK I was able to get the experience needed and moved up the ladder. I now make $58K ($28/hour) with great benefits. This is the scenario for many college grads - start cheap and get the experience to work up.

Bottom line is that increasing the minimum wage does nothing for the economy. In fact it will do more harm than good. When people are given money, the incentive to do better is gone and takes economic competition out of the workplace. If somebody wants to make more money then they need to find the means to do such - work harder, work more, switch jobs and/or get an education. The government feeds the notion that people can be lazy, do nothing/very little and still get paid. People are going to take as much as they can if it is always free. Quit giving things away for free and people will be required to figure it out on their own.

Opponents of raising the minimum wage argue that increasing the minimum wage would result in higher unemployment because it would cost more to hire employees.

This argument is weak because a study conducted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago showed that as a result of Chicago increasing their minimum wage by $1, consumer spending increased as well.

In addition, a study from the Economic Policy Institute shows that CEOs get paid 273 (TWO HUNDRED SEVENTY THREE) times the pay of their average worker. This statistic clearly shows that the companies can afford a pay increase due to the disparity between CEO salaries and worker salaries.

Raising it would help bring families out of poverty. A worker who spends their day working full time but is paid minimum wage is not able to support their family.

For many working Americans an increase in the minimum wage will make the difference between living in poverty and not.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 3.66 million workers paid by the hour earn at or below the minimum wage. An increase in this living wage is a strong response to the stagnant incomes that many of these workers face.

Contrary to popular opinion, the average worker affected by an increase in the minimum wage is not just a teenager flipping hamburgers. Only one in fourteen is a teenage student from a family with above average earnings.

The fact is, almost two-thirds of minimum wage workers are adults, and four in ten are the sole bread winner of their family.

Twenty percent of those living on the minimum wage were in poverty, and an additional 13% were near poverty

The American public supports increasing the minimum wage by a solid margin. Nearly every survey finds overwhelming support for raising the minimum wage.

The hard cold fact is-if they raise it, we the consumers will pay more for goods and services. As it stands now, the costs are hidden. Contrary to what all would like to believe or have been led to believe, those who receive some or multiple forms of government assistance are what is know as the working poor, which of course is coming out of the tax payers pockets.
You people need to tune in and listen to Rand and Ron Paul. This type of corporate welfare (tax payer supported employees of big business) is one of their pet peeves.

Annie Nonymous - Rather than throwing out the enslavement lines of how people need the money and how Washington St seems to be doing fine, you might want to do some fact checking. When people NEED the money to go earn it not whine how much they needs. There has always been poor, there has always been rich, and until the current administration came along there has always been a middle class.

Check your facts and you will find that whenever the minimum wage was raised unemployment was raised - especially amongst black teens. Once that trend slowed the entire economy experienced an inflationary rise as it adjusted to the newly legislated basement of labor's value. Whenever all this stabilized those who have no concept of basic economic law started all over again. Hence, we have the primary motivator of economic cycles - higher prices generated extra supply and reduced demand.

Can't and won't ever happen any other way.

So let us know when you are done copying and pasting worthless statistics and relating corporate America to the the whole nation.

I can reply to EVERY comment you have made by saying work harder, work more and/or get an education. Truth is that small businesses are who truly suffer with such mandates.

So if (as you say) "Twenty percent of those living on the minimum wage were in poverty, and an additional 13% were near poverty" and only 4.7% of hourly workers are paid minimum wage (above source) then that means that only 0.94% people working minimum wage are in poverty. 0.94% (34,404) of your 3.66 million minimum wage workers are below the poverty level. Doesn't seem all that bad now does it?

Because there are far more 18+ (assuming that is how you define an adult) workers than there are 18- workers. HOWEVER, there is a nice little chart in my SOURCE above that will show you that workers 16-24 comprise the majority of minimum wage earnings.


Keep rambling on worthless income stats, but clearly you never took a statistics class and learned that stats can easily be skewed to reflect positive or negative results. Hopefully I just provided you with some education on stats that you can use to go make more money yourself!

1.7 million earned exactly the prevailing Federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. About 2.2 million had wages below the minimum. Together, these 3.8 million workers with wages at or below the Federal minimum made up 5.2 percent of all hourly-paid workers.

Here's a thought. What does raising the minimum wage do to people making lets say 10.00 per hour? When you raise the minimum wage from 7.50 an hour to say 9.00 per hour, the person who is making 10.00 per hour is just an unskilled worker. I know many people who work hard, and invest in themselves at a lower wage,and by increasing the minimum wage would just cheapen the person who really tries. There are so many employers that say "oh workers are a dime a dozen" well yea, but there are some who really love the job they do, but won't ever see a raise because employers are just cheap. So, by raising the minimum wage will just hurt those who work at a lower pay.
Just a thought.

Reduce the rates and introduce drug, means, and situational testing. You'll have to employ some folks to do the real test work - they'll have decent jobs - and you'll save a lot more that those salaries will cost.....

My calculations were NOT wrong at all. I used YOUR statistics in MY way. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the math, I just used and explained the calculations in a way that would benefit MY argument against you. I took YOUR percentages and converted them to concrete numbers. That's why if YOUR information was correct and benefited YOU, then you (or the source from which you copied and pasted) should have used raw numbers and not percentages. But if you want me to convert your numbers again, I will. If 20% people living on minimum wage are in poverty and there are 3.8M working at or below minimum wage then only 760,000 of the 144MILLION employed in the US. That's only 0.5% of the working population of the entire nation. Again, I used YOUR numbers. Your efforts would make a better argument for raising the poverty threshold.

And by the way, you have been using labor statistics from different years and/or sources. I know that it gets tough trying to find new material to copy and paste, but try to do your best so that people MIGHT take you seriously.

Then you go on to say "I make plenty of money, probably more than you. Fact." --> I never said anything about how much you make and I didn't know that you wanted to compare portfolios, but we can if you would like.

I didn't state that there were 34,000 minimum wage workers. I stated that, per the numbers Annie copied and pasted here, that there were 34,404 minimum wage workers LIVING BELOW THE POVERTY LEVEL. I was proving that her numbers don't even work for her argument the way she presented them.

Any employer can pay more than the minimum, if they wish. The wages of everyone who earns above the minimum conclusively demonstrate that employers will pay above the minimum, to a greater or lesser extent.

You are correct that for the most part these above minimum wages are not an act of charity. In some way, shape, form the employer has concluded that the employee drags in more cash than it costs to pay them. Without that cash-flow positive situation the job goes away.

All prospective employees are able to decline an offer they feel is too low, and they are free to quit if someone offers more or they are not satisfied.

An employer offering below market pay will have trouble staffing, and one offering a premium will be able to pick and choose better candidates.

We're in a deep recession and there are applicants chasing jobs; prior to 2008-9 the situation was largely reversed.

Cherry picking stats doesn't cut it.

Maybe I'm off base but part of the big problem is that adults have taken the place of kids. I got my first job at 15 making around 7 bucks at hour at PRMC (then PGH). Even as a teen I realized there was no way I could live off that wage. Was it great money toward the purchase of my first car? Of course. Was I able to buy stuff my parents were not interested in wasting money on? Yes indded. Somewhere along the line jobs that were once populated by teens are now taken by adults with families and kids. Fast food is not set up to pay you a salary of 50K unless you take the management track. My point being is that minimum wage was pure motivation for me to get a education and move beyond my first job. Unfortunately the mind set has changed. Companies are not people and they could care less about your plight. If you want to make more you have to make yourself a valuable asset. You don't get paid more "just because". We may dislike the profit margins of McDonalds and Wal-Mart but hey, it's business and it's capitalism at it's finest.

If "Bennie businessowner" founded and invested blood sweat and tears in a business, he took an enormous risk and took had awesome ambition. Why shouldn't he make gobs of money? Why should anyone tell him what he HAS to pay anyone? He doesn't hold a gun to anyone's head and say "you must work for me!". This isn't slavery. This is america. ANYONE can make it here. I come from immigrants who had no money. My grandfather was sent home from school because he only spoke Italian. They told him he could return when he could speak English. There was no minimum wage. There was no welfare system. No assistance for immigrants. He learned English and his tile work is in the library of commerce and national cathedral. His 8 children went on to be high wage earners though not one of them went to college.
No one owes you anything. If you dont want entry pay, get a skill, shoe your value.
A businessowner will not show less profit. Hours will be lessened, management pay will fall and costs will rise. The "greedy" man at the top will not give his profit away. He didn't start a charity.

It is called FAIR LABOR STANDARD for a reason. Greedy business owners who used slave labor and child labor tactics.

Apparently as far back as 1938, business owners needed to be told what to pay people and set other regulations.

Note to all of you who demand a higher minimum wage ; open your own business, pay yourself what you think you are worth, and then deal with what wage you can afford to pay your employees. I did it myself on with a small savings. It takes guts, risks, and a lot of sleepless nights.
I'm tired of hearing the takers complain about the makers. Grow Up!

So I don't see much disagreement that increased minimum wage would lead to higher prices, only that it is the right thing to do. For the sake of argument lets say that prices and wages are relative, just like converting a fraction. What then would an increase in minimum wage do? It would increase the price of more labor intensive items or companies, actually helping those companies who have either mechanised assembly or moved production overseas. While I agree that the people at the bottom should be making more, an increased minimum wage is a bad thing for the American worker.

My family came to America before 1938 and I am very familiar with my history. I'm not arguing for slave or child labor. I'm arguing that if you start a business and someone is willing to work for you for $20/week, you should be able to hire that employee. If their skills are mediocre, you get what you pay for. I'm quite tired of hearing about greed at the top. Why do we teach our children a strong work ethic? Why don't we give everyone an A and a trophy and a the same wage for varying efforts?
My family sacrificed everything to come yo this country for am OPPORTUNITY to prosper...not because anything was promised to them because NOTHING was. Not one thing.
So if you work in an entry level job and you perform. You work hard. You show initiative....you will make more money. If you grunt at customers, dont present yourself with ambition or pride, you will make minimum wage your whole life. It is supposed to be entry level. Pick yourself up and support yourself.


Also, I meant library of congress not commerce in my initial post.

You know, all I want is to make $10 per hour by the time I am 50. Maybe if I stop criticizing people for things that I do myself, my bosses may like me and give me a raise. For example, I demand people to learn punctuation, yet I start sentences with a conjunction, (and) but do not follow them with a comma. Spell checker only let's me get the spelling right. "How did you determined....." , once again, am I in present tense or past, because I can't be in both places in the same sentence. Perhaps I should have said "determine". "Lets not even address that there are twenty states...." woops....I should have put an apostrophe in let's because it is a contraction, short for let us. Same thing in the sentence "Lets abolish all the laws....." and how about "Then lets see how much taxes rise...."(wow...three identical mistakes in the same paragraph....could it be three accidental typo's????) How about "Just like they do in CHINA"....bet you guys didn't catch that one....this is a classic example of a fragment. Spell check will catch that one but I did it just to see if you guys had your punctuation caps on. I guess not. I will bet that from now on, I will put all of my comments into a word document to make sure that I follow all of the grammar rules so I don't look like an even bigger idiot than I am...even the statistics that I enjoy copying and pasting to make it look like I got past the seventh grade. Look forward to another post on service jobs so that I can be part of the conversation. See you guys!!

Annie, you have yet to make a truly valid statement that is a constructive contribution towards increasing the minimum wage. All you managed to prove is that you are really good at copying and pasting worthless stats and that you are a ignorant liberal that has no concept of hard work, self betterment and free markets.

Bottomline, IF YOU DO NOT LIKE WHAT YOU ARE BEING PAID THEN WORK SOMEWHERE ELSE! What is so hard about this concept to you blind bleeding heart liberals?! Only an idiot would work the same job day after day if they knew that they could make more somewhere else.

Let me give you a lesson in simple free markets on the lowest level I know you're simple minded so let me know if I lose you in here. If I only want to pay you $8/hour and you want to make more then you go looking for a better job, right? If all the other businesses are paying more than I am then I'll begin to lose my employees, right? Eventually, when I lose all of my employees, I will be required to raise the compensation of my employees in order to retain them, right? Guess what that is called.... FREE MARKETS!!!

There are 19 states that have a minimum wage requirement higher than the federal standard.

Washington state pays $9.19

I would call that winning.
