PROUD TO SERVE FOR FREE said...

Thanks be to God; another day with no fire calls. But wait, the proud members of the SVFD braved life and limb to eradicate the vestiges of flat spots on apparatus tires and to make sure there were no hazardous conditions at select fast food and grocery establishments.

I love how people think the volunteers are free. Each corporation gets county and state founding (tax money). They spend this as they see fit, i.e. they bought themselves leather helmets at about $600 times about 60 volunteers. They were already issued helmets by they department. They also have a Christmas party every year where they give away big screen TVs, grills, and whatever else they want.

SERVE FOR FREE- not hardly

Paid guy!

Paid guy or not, it is the truth that you volunteers are not for free. I forgot to add that you also get a retirement at tax payers expense. How is that free? That makes every volunteer a paid guy!!!!!!!

Are you saying it would not be cheaper to have an all volunteer FD vs ones with paid?

GLAD TO BE PROTECTED BY OUR SVFD MEMBERS said...

10:31- you sound like one of the paid career maids. The community should be grateful for the proud women and men of the SVFD who risk their lives to help our community. While you career people are out riding the ambulance, which should and will become a separate department come next election, our volunteers are making sure that the citizens of Salisbury are protected 24/7/365. So what if they get a few incentives, they are due it.99% of the paid members of the SVFD are volunteers somewhere else and are enjoying the same benefits as our dedicated SVFD career volunteers.

No just stating the volunteers are not free

First there is no SVFD, it is just the SFD. Second the county departments do not offer retirement to their members. How are the volunteers deserving of it, I thought they did it for free? If they protect 24/7/365 then why do they often scratch calls during the day, nights, and weekends, leaving the "paid guy" to handle their call? Finally go ahead and separate the EMS from fire, and you will be paying providers a higher salary, just to keep them.

The providers (paramedics) should already be making more money. 40k starting pay for a paramedic in an area that runs 8,000 EMS calls each year with 3 staffed units is asinine. Not to mention that their FF/EMT's start of at 35-36k for 161hrs of medical training where as the paramedic on gets 4k more for 2000hrs if medical training.

How does this make sense?
