WICOMICO COUNTY COMMISSION ON WOMEN HOLDS FIRST MEETING

Salisbury, MD – Wicomico County Executive Rick Pollitt is pleased to announce the re-establishment of the Wicomico County Commission on Women. On May 20, 2013, Pyda Sterling (Chair), A. Kaye Kenney (Co-chair), Maureen McNeill (Secretary) and Vanessa Cooper (Treasurer) were sworn in as officers for the Commission. As part of his ‘Building Bridges, Building Community’ concept, Pollitt views the Commission on Women as a vital resource and advocacy group for women in the community.

The Commission on Women is a non-partisan organization dedicated to enriching the lives of women and families by focusing on issues of importance and concern to them including education, economic opportunities, health care, social issues and legislation.

Pyda Sterling, newly elected Chair commented, "I believe I speak for all of us when I say there was real excitement during our first meeting about the role the Commission can play in the community. It is a dynamic, talented and diverse group of women who can bring a wealth of resources to address the challenges all women of Wicomico County face as well as fostering opportunities for them in our community. We look forward to making a positive impact on the lives of women facing educational, economic and social obstacles in addition to recognizing those women who quietly and diligently work every day to make Wicomico County a better place for our families to live."

Are you kidding? Thirteen middle-aged white women out of fifteen total. Want to help? Mentor a child, volunteer at the food bank, etc. This looks like another,"I want to have my picture in the paper & feel important" group.

5:20 -It is a shame that you are such a negative person. From what I see, there are women in their thirties, forties, fifties and sixties on this committee. I'm sure the younger ones don't appreciate being labeled "middle aged" - LOL. I see diversity (which isn't just color by the way) and lots of different experience. Thank goodness this committee isn't filled with the same old appointees you see on every other committee in this town. Kudos to the Executive for selecting some fresh faces to compliment those with more experience! Congratulations to all and thank you for serving.

5:20 You are apparently out of touch with your community. I recognize several of these ladies as Executive Directors or employees of different non-profit organizations that our community depends on, such as United Way, HALO, Salisbury Chief of Police, States Attorney's Office,Coastal Hospice, Wicomico Habitat and DORS. Maybe you should step up and get involved so that you can give back to the community.

You need to take a closer look my friend. Ms. Kenny and Ms. Sterling and several of the others have been around the block many times. Same old good ol' girls club.

Just was scrolling through and saw the photo and article. This committee sounds like a great idea for our county. I recognize many of the women and it is nice that they are giving their to time to help with this. What is that saying- if you want to get something done, ask a busy woman. LOL! This committee should accomplish a lot. Thanks Ladies!

Important question is why was this reinstated and how much is it costing taxpayers? There are already numerous non profits with the same mission-doing exactly the same thing.

Ditto to 11:46 AM, some on these need to get a life and get out of Wicomico County Politics. Some of them are "supposed to be Republicans"!!
Kenney is also on the Liquor Board!!
This county needs new faces, they never reach out beyond the same old faces.

Why don't you put your face out there since you have so much to say? You couldn't hold a candle to Mrs. Kenney. She is a woman of integrity, something you obviously are lacking.

Any real true Republican who knows and believes in Republic values would kick this committee to the curb and yes, redirect inquires to the various non profits and church groups in the area who do exactly the same thing. This is wasteful and unneeded.

Tricky Ricky screws up again! This is a waste. Some are puppets too.

I agree 6:47. Why is Chief Duncan wasting her time on this? And Kenny just wants to be part of "something" since she lost the election. Go help the Community Foundation- they already have a girls club you can join!
