Large Plane Landing & Taking Off In Salisbury

Over the last few weeks there have been sightings of a large jet plane flying into Salisbury Airport. I'm told our Airport is tested regularly in case the President has to make an emergency landing here instead of the Washington area.

That's odd, why in the world would they redirect the president to a peninsula with few ways out? I digress, we are talking about the government here lol

No way Air Force One could land at Salisbury. The Alligiant Flight barely has enough runway. Your information is bad, once again.

They have been doing this for years. I don't know why everyone acts like its the first time.

I live in the glide path. We have had innumerable large planes (incl. 4 engines) this week, some doing just "touch & go". Why??

I would expect it would be Wallops & not salisbury since Wallops is a back up landing strip for the shuttle when they flew

I don't think we have enough "room" here to land that plane...maybe try
some muslin country. They then keep him :)

More like he wants to play a round at Lighthouse Sound. Or he found out Ponzetti's Pizza has great pizza and could get to the White House before it gets cold.

i do know dixie constrution company is about to be there to add on to a runway or to build another one.

You think all these airport runways are getting upgraded on Federal funds just so we can have bigger airlines come to the area? Think again. I have never seen so many touch and goes with the C4's as I have seen in the last 3 months, I have even seen an AWAC plane doing touch and goes.

With the 2nd longest civilian runway in Maryland it will be used for a backup for any plane that can land.

If you saw a huge plane land on Thursday or Sunday it is more than likely Allegiant.

@ 12:35
You must work there
There is definitely better pizza to be had in Salisbury.

As for the plane, its not like a car, you cant just stop where you are when your in trouble; an undersized airstrip is better then no air strip at all. Also, I'm willing to bet AF1 has been modified quite a bit to accommodate shorter take offs and landings.

Because it's an airport!

Air Force 1 is bigger then the plane pictured.

It looks like a C-32 ( AF designation for a Boeing 757)
In no way it would be AF1 or AF2 since the designation is only used when POTUs or VPOTUS is actually on board.

The plane also is used to carr FLOTUS or other dignitaries.

Unless this is an FAA aircraft used to measure the ILS system, but those are usually smaller jets to facilitate access to smaller facilities.

Hopefully, these are our planes and not other countries.....if obama gets re-elected, we all better start watching the skies.

Anonymous said...

They not be called AF1 or AF2 without the President or VP, but that doesn't change the size of the plane. Didn't it land in Salisbury a few years back with Mrs Obama for something at UMES? I think I have pictures of it. Touch & Goes at this airport have been going on for years.

SBY gets used for touch & goes because it is a short hop from congestion in DC area and thus kind of easy to train at.

As others have noted, AF-1 is both a 747 (what we usually see) or any other plane carrying the president.

There is a wide array of aircraft types at his disposal; they can size the plane to the capabilities of the field they're flying to.

C-130 fly through regularly (4 engine turbo-props) and used to see A-10s scoot through (distinctive whine).

You would think that they would want to land at BWI or Philly vs. Salisbury. But I suppose the small, sparsely attended area is a thousand times easier to secure.

What exactly do they test, though? That the runway is still there?

The plane you are seeing is AIRFORCE 2 a 757...it regularly practices touch and goes at SBY airport

Anonymous said...

1:16 you missed the point.:roll my eyes I just used the name because it's a long standing name in Salisbury and our president is an idiot that waste our money with petty things like golfing, vacation ordering pizza from Chicago.

C-130 practicing short field last night.
They spiral down from high altitude to practice landings at air bases in hostile territory.

About 80% of the funding for the airport comes from federal money.

There are about 500 federal government landings/touch & goes every year, including army, navy, air force, usmc, national guard, coast guard, nasa, noaa, etc., etc. Every one of them puts dollars in the till.

Just getting ready for when big jets are scheduled in and out of salisbury airport.
Get ready to have the windows in your houses rattling .

Salisbury is a great airport to conduct flight training at. The local area is not very congested with air traffic and allows efficient use of time and resources to get the required training for the flight crews. C-130's use this field for its ability to do all aspects of required training, and many flights take a short hop (15 min) from Pax River to get thier training as well. SBY has become the preferred airport in the region due to its location and low commercial traffic.

This should concern property owners surrounding the Wic airport. The US government has the authority to confiscate property if the need arises.Technically they purchase it,but the landowners have no choice but to sell.I can't recall the term for that, but my point is that airport enlargement seems to be the intent here.Everything that is happening screams a much bigger airport. From the air one can see how much expansion is possible.

While I'm very pleased the military does practice runs and I support that, it caused me concern when I heard this terrible rumbling sound over my home. I ran out the door just in time to see a rather large plane flying over. It sounded like the plane was going down. The pilots deserve alot of credit for their abilities to handle these big birds.

Concrete shrinks every winter when it gets cold; that's why every few years they have to add another 500 feet to the end. They are currently getting ready to do just that again, and the planes are here to "measure" the runway to make sure it has shrunk sufficiently to warrant the pricey contract.
I thought everybody knew that!

If you have any more questions like why are they putting up all those propellers along the coastline, you can usually get up with me down at the diner or at the bar. Just call and ask for me.

They are just practicing so when it's time they can roll the tanks and armor vehicles off the plane and into Wicomico.

@ 4:35

Better rattling from from jets then shattering from gunshots. Good ole Salisbury.

Anonymous said...

The "4 engine" airplanes you are seeing are C-130's out of Delaware.

12:01pm YOUR info is not accurate. Believe it or not, VP Dan Quale came in on Air Force 2 with no problem before the run way was extended. Allegiant has PLENTY of runway to do their thing!

I've seen af1 fly down south blvd heading west more than once
those babies go out every day

You sir/ma'am are an idiot. There have been NO "C4's" performing "touch and goes". There is no possible way a C4 could land here. If one tried, there would be a LARGE chunk of burning metal several thousand feet, if not at least a half mile, resting down the runway. They are C141 cargo aircraft. They have been using the SBY airport runway, along with the Presidents Air Force 2, for years.
Take your conspiracy theory and go to Barnes & Noble. Purchase a Janes Military aircraft identification manual and learn something.
Military aircraft need to be able to able to land at different landing sites (for practice) that represent/portray landing sites in active war zones.

Anonymous said...

And C130's do the same here

Anonymous said...

650am....Sir/mam, before you call someone an idiot, make sure your comments are correct as well. C141's no longer exist in the DOD inventory. They have all been at the boneyard for several years now.

Anonymous said...

Why are you two arguing? I all ready told you that they're C-130's.

The aircraft in the picture is a Boing 757! Runway 14/32 is 1400 feet longer than needed for this aircraft to use. The pilots are here mostly to practice ILS approaches. The Instrument Landing System at Salisbury was installed when former president Johnson requested it. Although Easton has an ILS, they also have noise abatement issues and therefore don't see to many military aircraft there. Thanks to the complaining residents of Easton keeping the military away, the Easton tower may lose all federal funding effective 2 January 2013. Wouldn't it be wonderful to pass along the cost of the airport control tower to the residents of Talbot county. We need to be thankful for the military aircraft doing approaches at Salisbury.
