Statement From Governor Martin O’Malley On THE CLOSE OF SPECIAL SESSION

ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 16, 2012) – Governor Martin O’Malley today issued the following statement on the close of the Special Session and the completion of the FY 2013 budget:

“I’d like to thank Senate President Miller, House Speaker Busch and the members of the General Assembly for completing work on the State’s FY2013 budget.

“With their leadership and willingness to come together, we have placed our State back on the path to fiscal stewardship, and avoided devastating cuts to our shared priorities of job creation, education, affordable college, care for our most vulnerable Marylanders, and public safety.

“We cannot afford to go back. There is too much at stake. Because of the choices we’ve made together, Maryland is one of only eight states to maintain its Triple A bond rating, certified by all three rating agencies. Our investments have built the best public schools in the nation four years in a row; expanded health care to over 300,000 Marylanders (nearly half of them children); protected job creation and innovation; made college more affordable for more families; and driven violent crime down to a 35-year low.

“In times of adversity, the people of our State do not make excuses, we make progress. Together, we have chosen to move forward.”

Fiscal stewardship? What a joke!

First off - the State quandered to the tune of 53 billion dollars in retirement funds that includes OPEB.

Second - They did not even fund the 1.2 billion dollars in 2011, nor 2010, and did not finishing paying the obligation in 2009.

What gets me is that they are going to now require the counties to fork over pension money to a corrupt and mismanaged state central pension commission - to invest and lose even more money. Who is going to bail the State out next time?

O'Malley, Busch, Miller, Conway, Hixson, Madeleno and their cohorts have become the menaces of Maryland. Maryland will be years and years recovering from this scandal.

I agree. They should go to prison because their actions are misleading the people into a false sense of security. The have squandered our State's wonderful resources and have left us nothing but a VOID.

Out reprethentitives are so swell. They take care of all these complicated things so that I don't need to worry about them. Thank you Annapolis. I know that its tough being away from your families during these extra sessions. Hopefully, the crowds at the bars have calmed down so that you are able to truly enjoy the lobbyists.

I'll make sure that Colburn is reminded of his voting for this income tax increase! I said it before, he has been in office way way to long! Hold the line and refuse any tax increase whether it is a sales or income tax period!!!

We are already paying way too much in taxes already. No compromise, no increase! Colburn you are a sell out to the people of MD and especially the Eastern Shore! This should not be forgotten when you come up for election next time!!!!
You are are true sell out and a sob!!!!!!

Governor O'Malley and the democrats in the Maryland Legislature are highly educated, compassionate people. They have been professional politicians almost all their lives and they know what is best for us. Who are are we, the uneducated, unwashed plebeians, to question their wisdom? It is our job to work for the common good, for the benefit of all Marylanders. It is our job to bend over, grab our ankles and smile.

Scott, I believe Colburn voted against both bills.

You had better check the record for SB-1301. It shows republicans Rich Colburn & George Edwards - (Allegany & Garrett) - voted in favor of BRFA initiatally. On the third reading they voted against the bill. But I agree - it looks very peculiar for Colburn's initial position.

maybe Scott meant Conway?
