Let's Talk About Downtown Reality

Yeah, let's park these people as far away from the Plaza as possible, NOT!

As we stated last week, there's only ONE handicap parking space in Lot 15 that services the Plaza. Whenever I get the chance I take pictures, (recently) of those people who need access to convenient parking but there is none available.

Today you can drive by the ONE handicap parking space and you'll see a Cadillac Escalade that has been parked there for almost 4 hours, hardly someone visiting the Plaza and more likely someone working Downtown using a sticker.

Forgive me for concentrating so much recently on just the Downtown parking situation but I want to make it very clear to the current Mayor there is a problem and it should be addressed. I should add, I called the Mayor's Office and was directed to his voice mail. When the message finished it conveniently told me his mailbox was full and cannot take any more messages. He must have an ad on American Singles.com.

Now, would you agree there's a problem here? Would you agree something needs to be done? IF you came to my Office and I had the power to do something about it, do you BELIEVE I'd get something done about it immediately? Enough said!

The city may be in violation of Federal laws. Taken from their website:

"Accessible parking spaces must be located on the shortest accessible route of travel to an accessible facility entrance".

Humid weather like we have today makes it hard on some of the individuals who are handicapped with breathing issues as well. One handicapped parking place is not enough. Mayor Ireton you suck

Handicap parking should not be close to buildings. It deprives handicap people of the much needed exercise they need. Its for their own good.
People tell me what i should smoke or eat for my own good.

I'm curious to know how this would work... if the parking lot is opened to all (at no charge) what will prevent those that work downtown filling up the places - then could then park for free instead of purchasing a permit (sometimes to park over behind Trinity Church). It seems that there could still be a problem with the lot being available for use by those who want to visit downtown/plaza. Just thinking out loud here... I agree something has to be done and I appreciate your perseverance with the issue.

At some point elected officials need to realize the old downtown areas in small cities do not meet todays needs. Parking and access is horrible. NO tax dollars should be used to prop up these areas. If Lawyers or accountants want to use
these old buildings - then fine.
Tired of hearing about the poor downtown area of dead Salisbury.

I feel like this is beating a dead horse. In my opinion the parking issue really isn't that important. I truly don't believe that changing the parking situation will really change anything. And i cant tell you how many times I've gone to park downtown and all the handicap spaces were empty. I mean there has to be more important issues than this. This is like the police spending time giving out tickets for tag lights being out. You know, because all the rapists, murderers and drug dealers have all been taken care of. Give us an issue with some meat. :-)

I agree, especially if they are the obese HC type.

Many fat and lazy people get the HC tags so they can get free up close parking.

Another thing that concerns me about HC parking is the fact they park close at the Centre of Salisbury yet they have to walk a mile to circle the inside of the mall. I just don't get it.

Hey Joe, I agree that we should be looking out for the welfare and safety of those in need, but are you aware that if you have a handicap placard you can park in any metered parking spot for free and for twice the amount of the maximum time allowed in the city of Salisbury? Just, respectfully, wanted to make sure this was clarified. Thank you.

Not just the Mayor, the City Council has the authority to act. Why not call them out too?

Joe:

Downtown is done -- stick a fork in it and run! Fugitabowit

Years ago the City tried to get the plaza owners to accept a special tax district to fix it up, but they refused. There were still some important stores there then but all have closed.

Then there was "RUDAT" -- another forlorn hope.

But on these warm humid days we still have "Perdue Perfume" for free when the wind blows right.

anonymous 12:28, ABSOLUTELY WRONG! It is the Mayor and only the Mayor that can do anything about parking.

How hard is this to fix?
$500 in signs and a some workers!
Problem is now that you have brought this to his attention, Ireton will do nothing.

In parking lot #1 there are handicapped parking spaces and two hour free parking. They are placed conveniently and accesible to the Gateway Building and the Gallery Building. These two buildings are fully enclosed, air conditioned and comply with all ADA access requirements. Perhaps they should be used. The pictures shown are out of context.
I am not defending the Mayor but when he proposes something the council will oppose it. It takes a team effort and the Downtown is worth investing in and saving

Today I read an article about Berlin and how they managed to turn their "inner city" ghost town into a dynamic and useful area.
Why aren't our people at least as smart as those in Berlin?

Gene pool is not deep in salisbury.

Berlin does not have a big mall
a few miles to the north !

Joe, I believe you have the intelligence and experience to be a strong public servant. Your candidacy should be taken seriously by the voters of Salisbury. With the sincere aim of improving your chances to be elected, I ask that you refrain from remarks like the American Singles comment. It is certainly of concern that the voice mailbox of an elected official is full, and it is fair to raise that issue in an objective, factual manner. Run a campaign that represents you well.

It is so bad that you guys have a pussy for a mare. Typical school teacher , big mouth and can't back it up.
Like to Debbie or Terry smack the hell out of him. He would piss his pants.
We need a mayor that will get the hell out of dodge and fix the issues here. Be part of the solution , not extend the problem with legal jargon.

no they have ocean city, 3 miles away! an even bigger draw!

I must say. I disagree with you on a lot of stuff. But Downtown needs some help! First they need 2 hour free parking everywhere! And to give downtown residents and employees free parking in the GARAGE all the time!
This would help with retail and would also give downtown employees a place to park for free!
Then they need to patrol with police downtown. We could save over $75,000 a year by cutting the two parking NAZIs on the plaza and that would off set by 50% the money we make on parking.
Then by downtown becoming more accessible we would have more sales and growth. I would think that would be a 20% return immediately !

Berlin just got a super walmart...Berlin is still super..they have it all together.

Look out there, you're talking common sense. Can't have a little thing like that or, oh, reality get in the way of a good story, can we?

1:25, you said, "I am not defending the Mayor but when he proposes something the council will oppose it."

Do you work for the Daily Times?

Ireton's Safe Streets package? Being worked on by this council.

Onley-Bateman? Former council said no. This council moved forward a compromise.

Police substations and K-9 unit? Council said yes.

Jim Ireton reminds me of my ex-wife. If I didn't give her everything she asked for, she'd tell everyone I never ever gave her anything.

Ex-wife, emphasis on EX.

Ex-mayor sounds good, too.

I'm happy the handicap slot is at the bottom of the hill! That way it's 2-3 blosks uphill to drive that wheelchair. The 2 hour parking lot is most used, and yes there is access to the plaza through the 2 buildings, but that still does not address the meter problem. If parking was 2-3 hour free everywhere, handicappers could use Plaza spots to get in and out. Holding shoppers hostage for a 20-6- minute meter takes ALL the relaxation out of shopping.
PLEASE, EVERYONE HERE, go to Cambridge and Easton downtowns. WE are the "Crossroads of Delmarva"' but they are the ones profiting!
Get up go out and look outside the window at other municipalities! All of these mentioned have Wal marts and Home depot type stores! Wake the heII up!

2:13 and that is exactly what Joe is doing - running a campaign that represents him well.

Joe, Ireton wants drinkers downtown, not handicapped people, people who take off their shirts in bars like him. Only the beautiful people are welcome.

Really? Why are they ignorant?

Anonymous said...

I was at the bar on occasions when the shirts came off and it really was not a 'beautiful people' only event. I am short, fat and bald and I loved the clothes changing parties. Also, do you really think that those parking spots on the plaza will stay empty for people with wheelchairs?? People with wheelchairs don't need to park close to buildings.....they have chairs with wheels on them!!!!! (i was in a wheelchair for 6 months. its a great arm workout)And there should be drinking allowed on the plaza. Lots of cities allow this. I think it would be great for 3rd Friday to have a beer garden.

BUT, the current climate in Salisbury is too divisive to get anything accomplished. We need people that can lead the local government to compromises in regards to issues like this one.
