Effect of NC Gay Marriage Amendment Unclear

North Carolina voters overwhelmingly passed a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as solely between a man and a woman, but not much is expected to change immediately.

That's because North Carolina law already banned gay marriage. The amendment voters passed Tuesday night by about 61 percent of voters effectively will seal the door on same-sex marriages and potentially have other effects farther down the road.

"Same-sex marriage was illegal today; it's illegal tomorrow," said John Dinan, a political science professor at Wake Forest University who writes an annual review of state constitutional amendments. "There were no same-sex civil unions recognized in North Carolina today. Those will not be recognized tomorrow. The bottom line is there's not a lot of change because of this amendment."

But it gave the bigots a feel good moment.

Bigots? Gay marriage has failed every time people have been allowed to vote on it. The small few are trying to force a change of what marriage is on an unwilling public bypassing the voters will using corrupt politicians to force it upon them.

Good reason not to move to NC.

Maybe we should have voted on civil right and rights for women as well. NC would probably still have slaves.
You can't vote on these issues - it's called tyrany by majority. You don't like the laws your legislator make, vote them out of office.
I can't believe that these issues are even up for discussion in 2012

10:23 Decent folks pray you stay out of NC and pray MD voters will take a similar stance in November.

10:39 I'll bet Jesus would be impressed with your prayer. Since his message was the oppression of anyone who is different?

Alex, don't try and compare being black to a perverted lifestyle choice. The people have spoken.

Marriage has always been defined as being entered into by a man and a woman so as to live together as husband and wife. Period. I have a problem with changing the meaning of words to suit politically correct ideaology. But I don't have a problem with civil unions if that's what the deviants want.

In 1875 North Carolina added to their constitution that "all marriages between a white person and a negro or negro descent are hereby forever prohibited."
Seems the state has a long history of making people inferior.

12:50 That was passed when NC was democrat controlled.

I beg the difference. This is an excellent reason to move to North Carolina.

2:27 You are correct for then, but after LBJ passed the civil rights laws they (racists) all left to become Republicans. South has been Republican ever since.

Oh, God! You people are idiots with nothing in your heads! Look, Be as gay as you want, you will never be able to procreate and raise a family, which is referred to as "MARRIAGE". Sucking and F*cking is not a marriage. Be as gay as you want, live with whomever you want, do whatever you want. I have absolutely no issue with your lifestyle. Just don't compare it with marriage, it is not and never will be. It will always be "Deviant Behavior".
