Atheist Group Honors TN Student Who Portrayed Jesus as Fictional

Summit High School sophomore Jeff Shott has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship for dressing like Jesus Christ on fictional character day.

The Spring Hill student was not disciplined for his action back in January, but Summit High Principal Charles Farmer did advise him that if the costume caused distraction during the day that he would have to remove it, school officials say.

Shott voluntarily removed his robes and sash, a costume that included a hammer and nail.

“Both principals said they were worried my costume would spark religious debates in every class and take up large amounts of time. I was sternly warned that if even one teacher reported the slightest disruption, I would have to take off my costume. Then and there, I decided to take it off,” Shott wrote in a letter to the Freedom From Religion Foundation, a national organization devoted to promoting the separation of state and church. The group ended up awarding him a scholarship.

I think the kid is brilliant, and should be rewarded for his creativity. He also did the right thing by removing the costume, the first priority at school is to learn... and he certainly would have been a distraction to all those folks who take themselves just way too seriously. As the article states, no one would have been offended if he dressed up as any other imaginary deity.

I remember cross dress day when I what in high school. I dressed as a pregnant nun. Much the same reaction. My principle called me to his office, got a good laugh, and said that it was creative... but that the costume put a lot of pressure on him and the teachers, and that it would be a distraction. He also said he would not force me to remove it, he left that in my hands. I took it off, out of respect for how he handled the situation... and hey, by that time word had spread so quickly that someone had dressed as a pregnant nun that it mattered not if I continued to wear it. I suspect it was much the same for this young man.

Atheism is a hate group.

Atheism is a hate group... because they dont believe in imaginary people?

They are trying to bring equality to this country, something christians have failed to do. People are tired of having Christianity shoved down their throats when they dont practice it.

This country is based off of religious freedoms, NOT CHRISTIANITY. Religious Freedom doesnt mean you can force others to live by your own beliefs.

Religious freedoms also DOES NOT mean that you can cry like babies when Christians believe something either. If you spent more time living 'religious freedom' you would have more of your own time and spend less time harassing people for what they do believe. But I forget, when someone believes something that you don't it is your job to make sure everyone knows it. Religious Freedom is not freedom FROM religion, it is the freedom to merely not participate. Stop bashing those who choose TO participate.

More power to christians. I have no issue with you guys finding happiness in something. Whether that be christ, buddah, allah, whichever.. But unfortunately, when you deny someone basic decency and basic civil rights by thumping your bibles on your chest, because you interpret a book a certain way, it doesnt sit right with me.

Why cant you guys just learn to ignore things that you dont believe in, rather than keeping people from being able to live the same lives that you do(minus the higher power)? Such as gay marriage. That has absolutely ZERO effect on your life, yet you fight and fight to keep it illegal? Why? How does this benefit you other than satisfy your mis-placed hate? Because its nothing more and nothing less than hate.

What is so hard? Jesus says in the bible that you should love all man equally. Love another as you love thy self. Marriage is not a christian word, it has been around longer than your religion.

Why all of the hate because someone doesnt love the same way that you do? Its not like they love children or animals. Animals and children cannot consent. Children are not adults and animals lack the comprehension/communication that we as humans have.

I want christians, buddhists, atheists, agnostics, muslims to all live happily together.

Its just funny to me how the only religious group that hates gays happen to be christians, the same people who pride themselves on "love for everyone."

So until christians learn that they arent this nations only religion, its not going to get any better. But its also not going to go away.

Also, believing something is one thing, but again, denying someone basic civil rights because of those beliefs is where it becomes legally and morally wrong. Why cant you see the issue with this?
