House Approves Suspension Of Child Support Payments For Inmates

The House of Delegates narrowly passed a bill on Wednesday that would exclude individuals from making child support payments while serving a prison sentence. Under the legislation, child support payments would be suspended for anyone incarcerated for more than 18 consecutive months and continuing 60 days after their release to avoid the accrual of an unmanageable lump sum.

Yes because somehow when the parent goes the jail the kids stop needing anything. My ex wife is in prison and her child support was stopped. Glad to know that she is taking care of but as for my kids I guess they don't need anything. I think that it should not stop.

That is unfair when you consider they do not extend the same courtesy to those who are unable to pay child support because they are temporarily disabled due to illness. The courts will suspend it with a doctors note BUT it continues to build up to the tune of thousands whereas according to this article prisoners are exempt from arrears. That sucks. If you have an illness you would be better off getting arrested for something so you never have to pay.

This is sickening. Maryland never ceases to amaze me w/ its "Hug a Thug" mentality. Apparently unmanageable arrears are more important than taking care of your responsibility as a parent/adult. So much for accepting responsibility for your actions whether it be breaking the law or having a child. The liberalism in this state is shameful.
