North Chicago Police Beating, Tasing Caused Man’s Death: Suit

The family of a North Chicago man who died a week after his arrest sued North Chicago police officers Tuesday in federal court, alleging excessive force and brutality.

Darrin “Dagwood” Hanna, 45, died on Nov. 13, a week after North Chicago police subdued him with Tasers during his arrest. For 20 minutes in his own apartment, he was beaten and shocked, according to the lawsuit, which also names the six officers involved: Tristan Borzick, Gray Grayer, Marc Keske, Brandon Yost, Arthur Strong and Jayson Geryol.

His face left unrecognizable to his mother. How exactly do LEO's justify this? Let me guess, he slipped and fell while officers gently took him into custody for nothing. No doubt after extensive investigation the FOP will claim this was within protocol and call it justifiable homicide because the SIX yes 6 officers felt their lives were threatened and needed to subdue him by turning his face into hamburger for 20 minutes and trying to microwave him. These officers should hang in front of the courthouse for murder, PERIOD!

It took SIX police officers 20 minutes to beat and kill a 45 year old man? They should be fired for incompetence. They had tasers, nightsticks, and numerical superiority. Are they REALLY saying that ONE man was beating their ass so bad that even TASERS and billy clubs could not subdue him?? REALLY!? This is murder. I'd like to see the pictures of what THEY looked like after this "life and death" struggle. But, when the police investigate the incident, the police will find that the police did nothing wrong. I guess the prevailing theory in the Chicago police department is "dead men can't testify". The only story to be told is THEIR story. Photographs be damned. If they need to, they could always move to Florida, where apparently cops get to kill and beat people at will, too. Or New York. Or Oakland. Or Baltimore. Or Phildaelphia. Just pick a city.

The North Chicago City Council voted Thursday to recommend the suspension of Police Chief Mike Newsome in the wake of the death of Darrin “Dagwood” Hanna, who died Nov. 13, a week after his arrest by North Chicago police.

The 4-3 vote was taken during a meeting of the Police Safety Committee intended to discuss how or whether to hold Newsome accountable for Hanna’s deaths, now under investigation by the Illinois State Police. Hanna’s family said he was beaten and electro-shocked. Council members listened to emotional testimony from Hanna’s family and other alleged victims of police beatings.

4-3 vote

I should note that the mayor vetoed the vote. They need 5 votes to suspend the chief.

Im an almost 45 year old police officer, and i can tell you for a fact that i could hold off five or six people, officers or not, for at least several minutes. and i have been on the other side too, where it did take several officers some time to subdue a fighting criminal. just because you are a cop with weapons doesnt mean that the person you are fighting is not much stronger, larger, and hyped up on adrenaline. theres a difference between fighting someone to get them down and handcuffing them. it can be very hard to handcuff someone who does not want to be handcuffed. i have been in numerous fights were mace and baton strikes did nothing at all to the person. cops are not super human. the thing that seperates us from morons like Imclain is that we have the heart to step up and do things that alot of people cant or dont want to do.

I call bs. Number one I don't believe you could fight off 6-7 people unarmed much less armed with batons and TAZERS.

Second that town has a long history with police brutality, having paid out 1.3 MILLION dollars to settle lawsuits.

Third, at some point before the fatal blows were delivered, there had to be a point where he could have been subdued. I submit they continued beating him after he was subdued.

This type of thing is becoming all too common. You can defend these type of cops all you want. I hope you go down with them, if this isn't swept under the rug as has happened too many times.

I am guessing he "didn't do nuthin'".

@12:57.
You are obviously a complete moron.
Read the details. These officers are guilty of trespassing, kidnapping, false imprisonment, hindering, obstruction, aggravated assault, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, falsifying report, criminal contempt, conspiracy to commit murder and first degree murder. because of a simple domestic argument. But, of course you must support the criminal thugs in blue.
Your a fool spewing blue propaganda.

12:57...a couple of things. Firstly, I'll take 4 --- just four --- of my friends and beat the dog crap out of ANY man you know (unless he's a black belt or something like that). And we wouldn't use or need TASERS or NIGHTSTICKS. I wouldn't need six people and it wouldn't take us more than a couple of minutes, you included. Secondly -- most of the trouble I've been in in my life has come from taking up for STRANGERS who couldn't or wouldn't take up for themselves. And THEY were damn glad someone like me was around. Don't question my "heart". You just can't (being a cop) admit that your guys kill, beat, rob, rape, extort, and flaunt the law (like it doesn't apply to you). Can't argue THAT, son, because the court records and film prove otherwise. And by the way, how much "heart" does it take to beat someone to death? Don't you guys usually wait until they are handcuffed before you start the badass routine? 2:00 got it right. You ARE a fool and a moron. Notice I don't post "anonymous", either, you sissy.
