The Fight Over Who Can And Can't Use Their iPad While Taking Off

You might not be able to use your iPad during takeoff and landing, but your pilot can. The Federal Aviation Administration says pilots on American Airlines flights would be allowed to use iPads instead of paper flight manuals in the cockpit starting tomorrow, even during takeoff and landing. The FAA tells the New York Times that it had tested the iPad for use in the cockpit and that each pilot is limited to one device. With the 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth all being turned off, there was no interference. No word on why they haven't tested the cabin so passengers can use their iPads and Kindles, too.

Apple's IOS devices have what they call an "airplane mode" which turns off all radio (blue ray, GPS, WiFi, etc) on the device. It's a lot simpler to request that all devices be turned off rather than dealing with individual devices.

airplanes are for flying, not a game room. Next thing some body will want to breast feed in public on a plane.

Well ALL SMARTPHONES have this feature but as an electrical engineer, there is nothing to interfrea with... Basically nothing in the electronic world that a consumer can buy will affect the airplane in anyway shape or form...

This is just a way to control you and to rub it in yuor face at the same time...

To think that an IPAD will not effect the communications in the cockpit but not the cabin is nuts... If anything, the cockpit would be more affected by that than someone using it in the cabin part...

Why don't you all stop being complete morons, and OPEN YOUR EYES and read and research and learn and know what your talking about...

Are you all that stupid to think an iPad will be OK in the cockpit where ALL the instruments are but not OK where the cabin is? If so what drugs are you on because I want some to sell because they must be the best in the world...

Bar these instruments of death from air craft.

It's true that conventional cell phones and PDA's do not interfere with an aircraft's electronic systems. However, there's no practical way for flight attendants to know what programs are loaded on each device. Cell phones have been used to detonate explosives, for example. Until they can quickly scan for suspicious apps, turn them off and quit your whining.

Hey "electrical engineer"! There are other passengers sharing the plane with you that simply may not agree with your insidious comments. Requiring electronic devices to be turned off during takeoff and landing is a policy. If you don't like it, take a bus instead.

Yeah those damn babies. Just don't feed them and let them scream for the entire flight. That will teach them. Mo-ron.
