i would be interested to see what the trend has been over the last 5 years.. is it getting better or worse
I hate the fact that our town has this problem. I do not see a way out until people get educated and get into jobs other than drugs, poverty and crime
The sheriff needs to step up.
Im not saying Salisbury is by any means perfect here but more dangerous than Camden NJ i dont think so. Im from the area around Camden NJ and that place is a warzone and Salisbury is nothing compaired to that hole in NJ
Blight = Crime, plain and simple.
I can understand why , look at the mayor , he's dangerous , look at his temper. he is providing the young with his stupid leadership skills. Also we higher all the criminals from ESI , and UMES.
Now I wonder how the DT & Ireton Boy are going to spin this one.
It's all gang related there has to be some hard choices made like curfew.
Some people need to go back and take static classes. Anyone that has and remembers anything from them knows you make a chart portray what you want. 9:29 hit it on the head. There is no way we have higher crime than Camden NJ. On the otherhand, I would like to congratulate the city mayor and police associates on bs ways to receive grant money.
Look at the headline, it is "Per Capita." Which means the rate of crime per person is higher. Sure Camden, N.J. has much more crime and probably much violent crime than Salisbury. Per Capita means that each person in Salisbury is more likely to be affected by by crime than in Camden. So in Salisbury, you are more likely to be a victim of crime than if you lived in Camden since Camden has so many more people living there. So that makes Salisbury a dangerous place to live.
10:04 - You probably meant a "statistics" class; if you took one you'd understand the term "per capita" and would know that 9:29 doesn't spend much time in Salisbury. If you doubt we have a higher crime rate take to the streets west of 13 and within 5 blocks of E Church street any night after about 10 PM. You won't walk far unless you're part of the blight Jimmyboy and the donothing Council has created.
9:29 & 10:04 seem to be in denial. Just because it is your opinion that Camden has a higher rate, one cannot deny the facts.
Salisbury is a dumpy & slummy city & it was ridiculous that the city was voted as All-America City in 2010. What a JOKE!
Lock and Load!
9:02 Why do you blame the Sheriff?
Shouldn't the SPD take care of the City Crime? Maybe the SPD should be incorporated into the Sherrifs department? Then your placement of blame would be correct.I think the SPD is afraid of the gangs and are avoiding the conflict. We better be ready to defend ourselves if this is the protection we are paying for.
anonymous 10:37, I do not believe any one is blaming the Sheriff. I believe they are asking for his help.
Forget about education and jobs. It ain't gonna work. Those committing crimes do not care about either. You got to nip it in the bud and get rid of all the cheap places (flop houses) for them to live.
What gets me is that there are 18 Florida cities. And my city is number 44.
So let's all move to Colorado, Hawaii, or Alaska?
What a comment thread of complainers looking for an excuse to complain about someone they obviously hate. Law enforcement and local government employees have no real control over crime. And the gang related "curfew" comment, laughable. Guys selling dope, most carring guns, many involed in numerous criminal activites and 9:59 am wants to give them a curfew. Funny! And 9:29 am's account of Camden N.J. is correct. I worked in Camden for 5 years, in every store that's left there, most tied to drugs. The high majority of the time I was the "only" white in a sea of blacks. The shop owners, fairly decent people, trying to survive. The white home owners still living in Camden (only few of the old ones left that couldn't afford to leave), seldom came outside their homes. The same deal, just trying to survive, make it to the end without getting killed. There was a bar, on the main drag through Camden that had dozens of killings that happened inside and just outside their door over the years. Many times late at night I would have to go repair the furnace in that bar. The bar keeper knew to meet me as I pulled up in my truck outside, or I would leave. He would have to escourt me in and out, once finished, or I would have been part of the body count. The majority were always armed, guns many times visible. In short, Camden is in a world all by itself, and Salisbury doesn't even begin to compare, not even by some over zealous statisticians most crazy estimates. There's a common black city crime thread that no one ever seems to mention.
If I remember correctly, Ireton repeatedly cited Salisbury's high crime rate in his election campaign. He said it was an unacceptable consequence of inept leadership in Salisbury's city government and that he ws going to clean it up and make Salisbury safe. Well, I don't know if it's any worse than when he took office, but it's definitely NO better. Ireton has proved to be a foul, inept, bag of wind and a total embarassment to all!
I can't believe this when i first moved here there was nothing about gangs or any one getting killed or missing from schools and that's only 7 years ago and not only is it happening. Possibly some the city people from other states came here and made it a bad city because things are a bit cheaper here then their and started killing and destroying this city.
10:19, are you freaking kidding? Say what you want about mayor and council, but the current crew did NOT create the blight in this town. That crap has been there for decades and all got worse under Barrie Tilghman and Al Webster.
By the way, Joe, this is good news. As I recall from your blog, we actually made it to #2 at one point.
9:29...so am I. These are per capita statistics. Yes....Salisbury is more dangerous when comparing violent crimes committed per capita. But.....it's whatever.
12:20 PM
So what's your solution mr. know-it-all?
solution? stop offering so many generous welfare benefits and come down hard on even the least criminal violation! when salisbury becomes a place known for the harsh treatment of the criminal element they'll move on!
1:43, that has to be the dumbest thing I've ever read. To think "city people" are coming to Salisbury for the lower cost of living while "killing and destroying" is laughable. No one who is in their right mind would ever move to Salisbury from a large city, at least not for long. Route 13 is nothing but wall-to-wall fast food and run down or boarded up businesses until you get north of (and out of) town. If it weren't for the college, Salisbury would fall off the map.
i dont know what you guys think, but the site where those rankings came from looks unreliable...
I agree with Lock&Load, SPD needs to be proactive. They seem to be much more concerned with busting college students(bc mommy and daddy will pay citaitons) it's all about income for the city NOT safety! The old SPD chief tried to do well and he was chased out.
Anyone who doesn't think Salisbury is more dangerous than the north is delusional. It is more chilling to kill people you were raised with, people who loves you and due to the fact Salisbury is an extremely small town makes it more dangerous everyone knows everyone and to kill or harm people who were able to spank you as a child is disgusting meaning knowing the killer or dangerous people don't exclude you from a crime happening to you!!! They don't care who their victims are, up north its very rare you know the person harmed and its usually random here it could be your sons child hood friend or your own relative. I'm from queens ny and I've never from birth on ever saw the magnitude of crime that happens here and have thought heavily about returning home.
These polls seem to differ a lot among different outlets. Many other polls have at least 4 SC cities/areas in the top 10. Take your pick basically every where is a toss up. Crime is going to continue and the majority of it doesn't even get reported anyway so these lists are somewhat inaccurate.
The college kids are to blame.... PEPPER SPRAY EM! That way the Salisbury Police Department will look effective!
Joe, Idk if it was an honest mistake or if you're just trying to make it sound more interesting than it really is, but Salisbury is 22nd on the list. NOT 4th
