Obama Administration Reportedly Considering 56.2 MPG Fuel Economy Standard

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration is considering a fleetwide average of 56.2 miles per gallon for all new cars and trucks sold in the US by 2025, The Wall Street Journal reported late Saturday citing two people briefed on the matter said.

The proposal would roughly double current fuel-economy targets, and would likely raise the price of some cars by several thousand dollars.

Obama and his cronies will be making money this you betcha

The price of cars just went up when you said good 4:19. You will need all that savings in gas money to pay your car payment. But by the time it happens gas will be $10 a gallon.

keep belching that smog into the air, 5:39

we are concerned with different types of green, its seems

I am looking to buy an electric car when technology improves.

90% of Government limos (Suburbans) get only 13 mpg. Ever wonder why THEY don't set an example?

Maybe they are too busy working on gay marriages.

President Obama, Good luck to you. We're gonna miss you when you leave office in 2012.

Good God, 6:27! What do we do until "technology improves"? Belch smog in the air and pay through the nose for energy credits in order to ensure that we won't have enough money left in our pockets when the technology arrives?

Happy waiting to you, my beattled one....

Well, I would be happy with some of the hybrids and the Nissan Leaf is pretty decent. . .I just prefer to wait until I see how reliable the first generation of products are. I could buy now though. Its just a personal decision. Some people have already made the jump. Early adopters deserve a lot of credit. . .they take the hit of depreciation. . .eventually their cars will make it onto the used market. I have already seen some Toyota Prius at local used car dealers. Change will come because our children need change. They deserve a clean environment. . .this requires change in the way we do things. I know how you republicans feel about change. . .but we can't run the environment into the ground because of your stubbornness. You're one of those that doesn't believe in global warming I guess. Fortunately the kids growing up today are not as ignorant and narrow minded as you. Have a great day! :o)

love to have one BUT I can't even afford a good used one now so how will I afford one of those? Quess I will be walking or lay around and become one of those lazy a$$ ones on public assistence. That is what Obama and the DemocRATS want anyhow.

7;30 PM,

Oh, I believe in global warming, or climate change (since it's actually cooling) and know that gasohol actually burns more fossil fuels than if we didn't have it, and that burning our nation's food supply is a bad thing and that it's more about money per gallon than real energy efficiency. I understand all these things. What's a problem here?

Just another step in the master plan to destroy America. He has almost completed what he was selected to do.

no, the kids educated in government schools today hear all the crap about climate change not realizing our climate has been changing since the beginning of time. it's a shame these little mush minds believe everything they are taught/told by the liberal system. many of their parents don't know any better either because they are a product of that same system.
there will come a time when the "grid" can't handle electric cars. have you even thought about that? use your bicycle or walk. let's look like a third world country and be done with it. if that's what you want go for but that's not what i envision for my family.
conservatives aren't narrow minded; they are innovative and great thinkers. they look for truth and apply it. they don't suck from the governments bottle. they work for a living and start new businesses and hire people to grow their companies. they don't live off others peoples efforts.
we had to have a lawn mower repaired this year and were told that because of ethanol in all gas now it's breaking down small engines. now isn't that just great. taking our corn (food shortage) to make bad gas that isn't good for small engines. the libs have struck again. another lame brain idea. stop this insanity now !!!!!

LOL @ 8:35! Yes, because those foreign automakers have all destroyed their home countries by advancing technology faster than US firms.

Bullard, you and the other Republicans reject the scientific evidence of Global Warming because you oppose the solutions. The GOP is in bed with big business. Big business does not want to make the necessary changes to improve the quality of the environment because it costs them money. So your party presents crackpot pseudo-science doctrines — climate skepticism is one, trickle-down economics is another. Bullard, the overall point and trend is working towards NO fossil fuels being burned. Ethanol is most certainly not the future. It has done more harm than good. . .destroys motors. . .especially in boats. That is from personal experience. Electric is the future for commuter cars. These standards will eventually force change on the auto industry. Without pressure on the auto industry they will not change and will continue down the same path. Ever seen the smog in L.A.? If you don't believe in the problem presented by exhaust fumes go there. . .you owe it to yourself. I know we live in Salisbury but in larger cities air quality is a real problem. We, as a country, need to move towards alternative energy. Electric cars are the future. We will still need trucks to transport goods but eventually even they may transition to hydrogen fuel cells etc. . .Myron Ebell and C.E.I. have taken money—a considerable amount—from ExxonMobil. You cannot trust the data compiled by those in bed with big oil! Look at fringe scientists such as David Legates and Patrick Michaels, of the George C. Marshall Institute! Margo Thorning, of the American Council for Capital Formation! For the skeptics, ExxonMobil is Big Daddy! Wake the HELL up!

The simple solution to the problem of overloading the grid is to use a combination of smart-grid technology and a battery storage system. It would be relatively simple to make system to charge a battery during off-peak hours so that you could use that battery to charge your vehicle whenever you wanted. If you charge your car during off-peak hours, then your car is charged instead of the system's batteries. Problem solved. Sure there is some loss in the storage and retrieval of this energy with this method, but it does completely resolve the issue of overloading the grid.

What we need is an independent company to come out with this technology and make standardized equipment. This way, the car companies can make cars with standard parts and things will move faster.

What do you simpletons propose? Just give up?

Furthermore, If you follow the history and development of the 100 year plus old ICE engine cars you will note that they did not wait for all the gas stations to be built and put in place before getting the cars to the people. The gas stations came after the cars. Furthermore you will discover that internal combustion engine vehicles didn't wait for paved roads and highways to be constructed before getting the cars to the people either. The roads came after the cars.
You might also note that it was an environmental problem - horse waste and dead horses themselves that drove the adoption of the gas powered cars.
And until the model A rolled off the line for about $500, the cars were prohibitively expensive - just like personal computers were when they rolled out in the early 80s.
Folks we've been here before and we have the model in place for rapid adoption. The future is coming whether the conservative party is ready or not. The NeoCons hold America back while other countries fly right past us. . .massive green energy progress has been made in some areas. . .and small countries at that. . .those that we once called "third world". . . when you refuse to change you get blown away. Fail to move and you get eliminated. Too conservative and you never get out of the gate. . .you get the picture. Change? We need. And you can believe in that, baby.

Why are issues like this seen as liberal agenda. Fossil fuels will run out one day. That is a fact. The more efficient and independent we become from fossil fuels the better for the entire planet.
