Georgia Program Replaces Migrant Workers With Ex-Cons

Recent immigration crackdowns in Georgia have left the agricultural sector with a labor shortage. A big one. An unscientific poll puts the gap as high as 11,000 workers, but plants still have to be harvested. The governor responded to farmers' complaints with a new program that puts people on probation to work in the fields at minimum wage, with bonuses for high production. This seems like an ideal match: probationers have a higher unemployment rate than the general population, and farmers need people in the fields. It turns out, though, that hard work, hot weather, low pay, and inexperienced workers don't make for a very bountiful harvest.

One probationer told the Associated Press:

Those guys out here weren't out there 30 minutes and they got the bucket and just threw them in the air and say, 'Bonk this, I ain't with this, I can't do this.' They just left, took off across the field walking."

Farm work is hard work. I guess they prefer an air conditioned cell.

My probates would do more time for walking off the job!

Some Americans don't want to admit it but the immigrant laborers who work on the farms and in meat packing plants and similar ag jobs are NEEDED because Americans don't want to do that kind of work. And, people still have to eat. There has to be a way people can enter America for jobs, AND PAY TAXES HERE and pay for services HERE so they contribute to the work needed to be done and CONTRIBUTE TO AMERICAN SOCIETY rather than just take from it. They should NOT be given the same benefits as AMERICAN CITIZENS with the social welfare systems, voting or anything else though. There has to be a way this can be accomplished BY GOVERNMENT! They should ID every person in America and then people either do have a right to work or NOT. American Citizens should get an ID from the government too. If you don't have that citizen ID, you aren't qualified for any GOVERNMENT assistance. Period. Some prisoners will do anything to get out and work. MOST will not! Nice try though!

More people would actually be willing to do this work if at the end of the day, they actually made enough to feed the family without food stamps

They should use inmates, then they could shoot them if they ran and didn't work. It's a win win situation !!

8:22, Why can't those you speak of do the work and then supplement with food stamps?

Inmates should be a good option. If they walk off the job perhaps they should lose the benefit of an air conditioned cell and the other amenities that they are provided when incarcersted (TV, etc.). As long as prison is more comfortable than work and there are no consequences for not stepping up and doing your part we won't see improvement.

"I ain't with this"~~~~What a bunch of losers!

It's ironic how everyone gets on immigrants for not being able to speak English.....

If welfare was not so readily available American people would have no choice but to take those jobs.Unfortunately only the immigrants do it because the Americans are too lazy.I hate when people talk down about these immigrants when we have lazy pieces of crap in our own country who suck off the system.

I have said it before and will continue to say it. Use the people that are locked up or are on welfare. If they want to eat they work just like the rest of us. No more sitting in prison or walking the streets all night and making us foot the bill. No one wants to work. A portion of the food harvested could go back to feeding some of the prisoners and the farmer gets cheap labor. It's a win win for everyone.
Let's face it gardening/harvesting is hard work but many do it because it's the only way they can feed their family. Do they have the choice just to throw their hands up and say I'm not doing this.
There is no option anymore people. Work and eat or go hungry.

I believe you mean 'illegal aliens', not immigrants.

They deserve every bit of rude behavior they receive since they are here ILLEGALLY.

I don't know how readily welfare is to obtain. But I do know there is a process people have to go through to get any benefits.

And you're not dealing with the best sort of people to begin with. They are in jail after all. If most of them wanted a honest job they probably would not be where they are at now.

They were given a chance to better themselves and some could not handle it. They are just making it harder on themselves.

> Let me guess. . .Republican?

What the Republicans want is for minimum wage laws to be abolished so that they can bring manufacturing/menial jobs back home to America by paying Americans 13 cents an hour like they do in China right now. (they aren't making jobs with their tax breaks they are pocketing the money and sending the jobs overseas) Stock the shelves at Wal Mart with the blood, sweat, and tears of the American working stiff. The Republican way.

I agree 1:48. There is no reason AT ALL why someone on welfare can't work at a minimum wage job and just use the entitlements as a supplement.
If they are unable to find employment in a reasonable amount of time than the government could put them to work doing maintainence, groundkeeping and other non skilled jobs around government owned property.
