TROOPERS CAPTURE TILGHMAN BANK ROBBER

(TILGHMAN, MD) – Maryland State Police have arrested a Talbot County man in connection with this afternoon’s armed robbery of a bank on Tilghman Island.

The accused is identified as James A. Welzenbach, Jr., 61, of the 100-block of Madison Avenue, St. Michael’s Md. He is being charged with armed robbery and related criminal charges. After processing, he will be taken before a court commissioner for an initial bond hearing.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m. today, Maryland State Police at the Easton Barrack received a call reporting that a robbery had just occurred at the Talbot Bank, located in the 5800-block of Tilghman Island Road, Tilghman, Md. Troopers and deputies from the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area in an attempt to locate the suspect.

A description of the suspect was obtained from a bank employee. The employee said the suspect entered the bank brandishing a firearm and demanded money. The employee gave the suspect an undetermined amount of money and he left the bank. The employee was not injured.

Police check points were set up along Rt. 33 with the assistance of the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office, St Michaels Police Department and the Easton Police Department. Also assisting were officers from the Natural Resources Police and agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Tilghman Island Elementary School was immediately locked down at the onset of the incident. Police worked with school staff and Talbot County School Board members to ensure the safety of the children.

Investigators also obtained information on the suspect and the vehicle he was driving through bank surveillance equipment. Staff at the Star Democrat newspaper immediately placed this information on their website to assist in alerting the public to the police lookout. Through diligent police work and with assistance from the community, investigators were able to identify the suspect and his vehicle. Investigators responded to the suspect’s residence early this evening and he was arrested without incident.

Investigators continue to work through the night authoring search warrants as they search for the stolen money, weapon and other evidence of the crime continues.

Bank gets robbed and 300 police are setting up roadblocks, stopping traffic, searching cars, helicopters in the air, and canvassing the area. Old lady gets her purse snatched and her car stolen in the middle of a Wal-Mart parking lot and, well, uh, we're gonna file a report IMMEDIATELY. Is the banks money THAT important? Or is it a golden opportunity to maybe bust a cap, do a high speed chase, or pursue someone through a neighborhood? You know, the "excitement" is irresistible. Protecting normal, everyday citizens? You'll NEVER see 300 cops looking for the guy who just robbed Joe Blow on the street. Or 300 cops looking for the person who stole his car. But let someone take something from a BANK??? Wow, game on....

I am glad there was 300 police officers setting up road blocks. Imclain your crazy, there is not even 300 police officers in the area. Cars were not searched and there was no helicopter in the air.

You don't think the response was to protect citizens ask the bank teller and other employees at the bank. How about the fact that the suspect had a loaded weapon and was brazen enough to walk into a bank and point a weapon at a citizen. Was that enough to require a response to protect normal everyday citizen?

I think though Imclain, next time you need help call a crack head.

12:58...you missed my point...Why is there such a response to a BANK robbery and why don't OTHER robberies get that kind of attention??? Same thing I say about a cop getting shot. If Joe Blow gets shot, there might be a few cops to show up. A cop gets shot? Every cop on the force is called in, neighborhoods are searched, cars are stopped, roadblocks are up and our Constitutional rights go out the window. Why are banks and cops MORE important than the rest of the citizenry? And cars WERE searched. And when I need assistance, I REACH for my help. You can be in "love with the police", thats ok; they have their place in society. I merely question their power and methods. THAT right is STILL in the Constitution, isn't it?

There were not searches of cars. Cars were stopped briefly and a quick interaction with the occupants were made. Searches as the defined by the Supreme Court were not conducted.

No police officers were called in yesterday. The bank did not receive special treatment I am sure.

The urgency was the a suspect with a gun who continued to be a threat.

When police officers are shot and during police involved shootings there is protocol established that certain units must respond and handle certain aspects of the investigation.

You must watch a lot of T.V because when someone gets Joe Blow gets shot or robbed every available unit goes to the call.

Maybe yesterday's crime occurred at a time when there were additional police were working and carried over into a shift change which resulted in extra police officers being available.

I think you have never read the Constitution. The majority of rights you speak of are in the Bill of Rights. I will give you they are considered Constitutional Rights.
