A Press Release From Senator Jim Mathias

Today, the three surviving Mayors of Ocean City, Senator James N. Mathias, Jr., current Mayor Rick Meehan and former Mayor Roland “Fish” Powell, along with wife, Jeannie Powell, are attending the funeral service for former Maryland Governor William Donald Schaefer.   The funeral will be held at Old St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 233 N. Charles St., Baltimore, 11 a.m.  The entombment is at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, 200 E. Padonia Road, after the service.
Senator Jim Mathias said, “I am ever grateful for the contributions made by Governor Schaefer.  Being born and raised in Baltimore then moving almost forty years ago to the Eastern Shore, I witnessed his dedication to all areas of our great state.   Governor Schaefer truly served as an inspiration by his commitment of service to all people.   God bless him and may he rest in peace.
Mayor Rick Meehan added, “Governor Schaeffer was a true friend to Ocean City and the Eastern Shore."
Former Mayor Roland “Fish” Powell said, “Governor Schaeffer made the trip to the Eastern Shore and Ocean City a real pleasure with his Reach the Beach program, and kept us safe with beach replenishment".

Governor Schaeffer was no friend of the Eastern Shore. Yes Rick is being polite because Schaeffer just passed but he never cared for the "Outhouse of Maryland"

Governor Schaefer loved the Eastern Shore and as far back as the late 60's has owned property here. The outhouse comment came in response to a similar comment made to him about Baltimore City from a shore elected official.

He and Mandel were Maryland's best governors ever.

I was watching Baltimore's channel 13 of the funeral coverage. As they were bringing the Mayor's casket out of city hall, the announcer said "the best mayor ever is leaving city hall for the last time." I was so sad.
Our only hope for another like him is if Donald Trump does announce a run for president. Donald is a get it done man also.

Shaeffer had an old mobile home in the Castaways Campground owned by a Purnell in West Ocean City. My father-in-law was a seasonal camper just around the corner. It wasn't used often by he and his lady friend. He just rented and wasn't a property owner on the Shore. The campground has changed owners, been combined with the old Eagle's Nest campground, but I think the original Purnell home is still there with the gravestone next to it bearing their daughter who was killed in an auto accident at a young age.

Al in Fenwick, check mdlandrec.net This is the state deed website. He started buying and selling property in and around the Ocean City area since 1967. He owned a condo in I believe the Jamaica Bay and also a mobile in Montego Bay. Hilda also owned units right next to him. He also owned property near the commercial fishing harbor in West OC which he sold to the Brex family. They built the restaurant (The Mast) where the Captain's Galley now stands.
