I was wondering when the State is in such bad financial situation, why is the State still having training seminars? I realize some are necessary but many are not at this time. The State is having management training for employees who are not in management but may want to be in the future. These training classes are three days long, 4 times a year. The State pays the hotel expenses, meals and gas and tolls. Usually the employees are put up in a nice hotel such as the Country Inn and Suites or a number of other top notch hotels. They could be held in Ocean City, Annapolis, Glen Burnie or any place so desired. If the class starts, let's say on a Wednesday, the employee can go up on Tuesday night, all expenses paid, and stay through Thursday night and attend class on Friday.
Also, the State is still providing computer classes and just about any other topic of training situations which may be determined to be useful in the workplace. I can get a copy of the training courses to back up my issues here. The State pays for the employee's day away from the office, pays again the gas and tolls and provides lunch and usually some bagels, danishes, etc., juices for breakfast.
I think in a time of the State's disarray, they can discontinue these classes. State employees are made to take furlough days, salary reduction days and no pay raises for 4 years now, but has enough money in the budget to spend on these type of classes. If an employee leaves his/her position in the State at this time, there is a job freeze on, therefore the position cannot be refilled.
I do believe these classes can be helpful at times, but being an employee of the State for many years, I also have seen where these training classes, seminars and meetings have been a complete waste of time and expense. There are certain employees that will attend every class and seminar possible in order to be away from the office. Again, the salary and travel expenses are being paid and so are the fringe benefits of being out of the office especially for overnights and the State pays. The State needs to freeze these classes, seminars and meetings if they are not needed for the immediate time being.
I am not trying to take away from advancing one's self, but what I am trying to take away is the waste the State is putting out to certain employees, when many others are stressing what the next paycheck is lacking due to furloughs, salary reduction days and no pay increases.

As a recently retired RN employed with the state I attended certain seminars but never was reinbursed for any overnight stays. That may have happened many years ago but not the last 20 years.

Man, you are penny wise, but pound foolish. I won't bother to take time to explain. Try to figure it out. It's not that difficult.

This post doesn't have anything to do with Md's wasteful spending but it does have something to do with SFD's spending, seems they are in the market for some new ambulances and they put together a committee to spec out and get bids on these vehicles but the new chief decided he wanted to have the same kind of ambos his old company ran, so he went ahead and bought these ambulances for more than what two other bids were, over 25,000 more than two other bids. Just thought you might like to know, if you didn't already. Could always get you more info if you want it.
I would love to know what state agency is being referred to here, as well as see the "proof"
God forbid we have competent state employees. Compare training that a fortune 500 company forces their employees to attend to what you are talking about. Those companies that turn an honest profit understand the return on investment when it comes to an employee that continues to learn how to do their job better. Like most companies the State is doing more with less people and those people need to be competent.
