Explosion Rocks Friends Vehicle In Baltimore

A friend of mine visiting Baltimore experienced an explosion that rocked his vehicle as he drove past a construction site near Howard Street in Downtown Baltimore.

There are about 30 fire and 20 police vehicles now on the scene. We're told the explosion seems to have occurred in sewer pipes.

I've looked elsewhere on line to see if anyone has any update on this story but it's too new. We'll try to keep you posted.

2 injured in Baltimore manhole explosion
January 10, 2011 - 4:03pm

BALTIMORE - A Baltimore fire spokesman says two workers were injured in an explosion in a manhole near a state office complex.

Fire spokesman Kevin Cartwright says the explosion occurred about 12:30 p.m. Monday at 201 W. Preston St. The workers suffered first- and second-degree burns to their face, arms and hands and were taken to nearby hospitals, where they were reported in serious condition.

Cartwright says there is no active fire in the manhole and the cause has not been determined. The spokesman says no other injuries were reported and surrounding buildings do not appear to have been affected by the explosion.

This was a scary situation with all of the mail bombings going on. I hope the workers will be ok.
