The Delaware State Police and the Newark Police Department have arrested an Elsmere man in connection with a string of robberies that have occurred in the Stanton, Wilmington, New Castle, and Newark areas since the end of December of 2010.

 

George H. Leifheit, 39, of Elsmere, DE was arrested on Sunday, January 9, 2011 after a trooper on patrol spotted his vehicle traveling on I-495 and DE Rt. 9, in New Castle, after Leifheit had committed the robbery of the Tobacco Zone located in the 1000 block of S. College Avenue in Newark at approximately 1:15 p.m. A description of Leifheit, as well as his vehicle, a 1995 Plymouth Acclaim, had been broadcast after the robbery. Through further investigation detectives were able to link Leifheit to a string of robberies that have occurred in the area since December 20, 2010. During all of the robberies, Leifheit entered each of the businesses and confronted a victim employee. He then displayed a weapon or implied that he was armed with a weapon and demanded cash. After receiving the money, Leifheit fled from the business. On at least one occasion he was observed by a witness entering a Plymouth Acclaim and a registration number was able to be obtained. None of the victims were injured in any of the incidents. 

 

George Leifheit was arrested and charged with the above list of crimes. He was arraigned at JP Court 11 and committed to the Howard Young Correctional Facility for lack of $142,000.00 secured bail.
