I know of 4 in their early 30s. None are really looking either. One gets unemployment, one is supported by parents & likes to drink, one is supported by very wealthy parents, and one lazy ass guy is supported by his teacher girlfriend. All are white.

None.

I am on unemployment. I have been since November. Let me assure you that I am not one of the "lazy people" that several of you are referring to. I know several people who are on unemployment who are not couch potatoes. For those of us who are faithfully searching and applying, it is extremely frustrating. For every job posting that I have applied for there are at least 400 applicants. The other factor that comes into this is the fact that these companies only want to pay $10.00 an hour. I am the only one in my household and that doesn't cover my monthly expenses. I am an Executive Administrative Assistant with 20+ years of experience. It's a tough market here and I am very, very frustrated.

I know 1 who has been unemployed for over a year and claims there are no jobs. I have come to the conclusion that she is lazy and would rather collect a check rather than work. Let me just say that I have had a job ever since I was 15. Not the one I have now, but I have always worked no matter what. I have never collected unemployment. If I loose my job today I will be filling an application out at McDonalds so I at least have something to cover me until I get a better job.

I feel truly sorry for those really looking for jobs, not like 11:03 unemp since Nov 2009 and won't work for $10 per hr! I am a wife, mother gr mt who worked years for $10 an hr to keep a roof over our head what makes you so special--the answer is NOTHING. I know a youg family with three children, one in college, and a new house that hasn't worked in years and won't work unless its worth their while. Another young family w/2 young children, that keep on buying all the latest stuff, new vehicles, new house, and don't work! What is going on in Salisbury & everywhere is a crime. Sorry to those that do REALLY try it's the majority that gives unemployment a bad taste in our mouths1

A man that I know who has lost his job last year, he has a college education. He cant even get a job at McDonalds or Grocery Store. He needs to look in a new town because Salisbury doesnt have much of anything.

three that I know of for sure; Family across the street, white, both parents unemployed, two children, under the age of 12; middle-age woman, married, white, hubby is working.
Unemployment is not discriminate, it affects the young, the more mature, all races and ethnic groups.
A HUGH tax cut would certainly be helpful in this economy!!!

Anonymous said...

A HUGE tax cut would do nothing for the economy and it would do nothing to create jobs.
You can give all the tax cuts you want and people are going to pocket the money. Businesses are not going to hire more people because they've now figured out that they don't need all those people they laid off way back when. The jobs are getting done by those left with a job.
As far as $10.00 an hour, what's wrong with that? I'd get off unemployment for $10.00 per hour - it's better than minimum wage!
Anyone who wouldn't do so doesn't WANT to work!
It's called STARTING OVER!

way too many! I was just talking to my children about this yesterday. Both my husband and I are fortunate enough to have careers where we are both in high demand all the time and higher demand when the economy is bad. I was explaining to the kids, as they were complaining that we often tell them "not this week" or "I'm broke" that they are so lucky that both parents are working. We have too many friends who are losing their homes, who have been looking for work for so long.

My goodness, most of the people around the Hebron, bivalve and nanticoke area don't work , they like that. I don't think they want to work. They like to fish and hunt. They like to hang out at the far dept. and drink beer. They don't even know we are in an economic crisis , I guess not because they have lived this way for years. I asked one person if they voted and he laughed , said"I don't even know how to".

11:56 good point.

And the comments show how sick some of you have become with all the poison coming from the far right. You can't even see reality. Do you really think most of the unemployed are sitting on their butt? Even in the face of near 10% UE rate? When we have barely enough hiring to keep up with new workers coming in? In the face of the worst recession that most of us have seen in our lives? Get a grip. A sad testament to what we have become.

I know a few that are unemployed. I also know a couple of them that are unemployed, drawing on the state and working for cash to supplement their unemployment checks.

Are you people kidding me? $10.00 an hour which calculates $20,800 per year. That's not counting any taxes, contributions to health insurance, disability, etc. Can your family make it on that amount? I hardly think so. Your looking at bring home of about $13,500-$15,000. So basically I'm supposed to start over just to get off unemployment? I've worked from the time I was 14 years old. I haven't made $10.00 since I was 16. It's not my fault that I was laid off due to company restructuring. Do I have a car payment? No. Do I have a mortgage payment? Yes. I haven't went out and splurged on myself or bought anything new. So excuse me if I don't think I feel I should settle for $10.00 an hour. I've worked hard all of my life and I hate that I am in the situation that I am. So I will keep applying and searching for a higher paying job.

Anonymous said...

For 10 dollars an hour you would make the same amount as you do on unemployment since the maximum is about 400 a week. If you refuse a job making 10 dollars an hour it just tells us you DON'T want to work.

If you want the real education about how people receive all of this money and stay unemployed for years, go to Social Services and sit and listen for a while. People have learned how to get around the system and they can tell you exactly how to do it. Every single day they go in there, sit and discuss the amount of illegal drugs they all use. Then they brag about the food stamps, unemployment, and health care they receive. Then they sit and brag about how long they have been receiving money from all of these programs. You would get a real education if you just go in and sit and listen. Those are the people to be pissed at. It's disgusting.

Most of the people I know are UNDEREMPLOYED,including myself. They are willing to work full-time but due to the economy their employer has slashed hours and manpower. They have good jobs but their hours are being cut down and they are right there on the edge. They earn too much for public assistance but not enough to make ends meet and they want FT jobs but most of the FT jobs they apply for pay less than their now PT jobs.
So,most of the people I know who are looking for jobs are already employed.Except for those unable to work due to genuine health problems, alot of the rest are "skating".

Anonymous said...

Holy smokes, blutojthetotmom said something that I agree with and is intelligent. There are many many people who are underemployed, working that $10/hr part-time job to help make ends meet. Anyone who bangs on a guy for not taking a full-time job making $10/hr has obviously never made a decent wage and has a limited education. Don't fault him for holding out for a management position - it worked for cousin eddie!

Anonymous said...

Isn't unemployment based on a percentage of your base period wages? I could be wrong. If 2:20 is collecting an unemployment check equivelant to $16/hr why would he go out and get a job for $10/hr? Just so people wont call him/her lazy? No, its a matter of making ends meet for some people who have lost their job and can't work for any amount per hour because they have a family.

Anonymous said...

3:59, at one time it maxed out at $400/week. So in an average 40 hour work week at $10 an hour, you would make $400. This may have changed, but I think thats what the other comments are getting at.

Personally, I do not know anyone who is unemployed. My entire, rather large, family is employed, all of my children are employed and I am employed. All of my friends are employed, as are their spouses and their children. Just not seeing the problem - if you want a job they are out there.

None.

And as Dr. Phil says if you don't have a job then your job is getting/finding a job. Anyone that wants to work can find work. You leve at 8AM in the morning and you apply all day and don't stop until 5PM. I bet it does not take but a few days at most to find a job. Those that are unemployed, most likely are unemployed because they do not want a job that does not meet their standards. I can speak of this as I have worked many a job doing many different things until I got into the job I enjoy and earn good money. BUT if my job were to go away tomorrow, I am not too proud to work at any job I can find to pay my way in life. Sitting back and collecting unemployment just "because you can" is lazy and un American...shame on anyone who does that.

You are not an Executive Administrative Assistant. That was your title at your last job. You are unemployed.

Everyone I know that wants to work is working and I have a rather big network of friends and family!

The truth is that there are lots of people who have spent years abusing unemployment and all of the other government programs. The left has engineered people to be co-dependent on the government and feel as though they are "entitled". Now, those people who have worked hard their entire life to earn their money (regardless if it is more or less than $10.00 per hour) are getting nothing for those years. The mix is both lazy people who abuse, and people who have a family and bills that they were used to earning more and cannot sustain life. I have counterbalanced this by cutting back on spending, but if we all do that then there will be less jobs, right? it is avery delicate balance and I personally know at least 25 people who were recently unemployed and all of them WANT to work. I have had to call unemployment to extend lay-offs, has anyone else tried to call them? Do you know how long you are on hold? I think some people do not realize just how bad it is, but if you deal with personnel eveyday, you start to understand. It has not hit the bottom yet.

1 lives here, 2 in other states.

All 3 have gone so far as to apply at fast food places.

The 1 here was turned down because "there are plenty of college kids to hire."

Back in the old days, the low end of workers could get a job in these joints. Thanks to the thousands of college kids who come and gos, they can't any more.

Funny thing is, none of the 3 are fast food material. 2 are college grads, 1 is a tradesman. All smart people.

So I guess these 15.3 million people are sitting on the couch not wanting to work?

And it taking 20.5 weeks to find a new job is because they are lazy?

You uninformed and out of touch with reality people are always good for a laugh.

If it wasn't so sad.

On Friday, in the December unemployment report, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said the number of people out of work for 27 weeks or more hit 6.1 million Americans, or 40 percent of all 15.3 million jobless. This is the most since 1948, when the data was first recorded, according to the Department of Labor. On average, it now takes 20.5 weeks to find a new job – double the amount of time in the 1982-83 recession

I have claimed temporary unemployment a few times because my job is only full time about nine months per year. I think what most people don't realize is that unemployment insurance is paid by employers, so if they choose to lay someone off it's their responsibility to pay. Now I don't milk it because I always return to full time work, but I can't blame a person for filing until they can find a job that pays what they require. Any of you that expect a person to work for $8 an hour part time when unemployment pays them over 400 a week are just silly. You wouldn't do it in their shoes. If we didn't have unemployment insurance all of our employers could just fire us any time and hire someone younger and cheaper without any consequences, and you better believe they would.

i just came off unenployement after 7 months on it.
prior to losing my job u was making $1k/week. Md pays you 60% of your average wage up to a max of $380/week, paid bi-weekly. the obama stimulus act added $25 a week to this. so i went up to $425/week, all before taxes.
So i went from bringing home @ $700/wk to $325, then i had to pay $400 month cobra medical insurace outa that, woulda been $1k of not for goverment.

people that are on unemployment want to get off if they have ever made a decent wage.
