Mayor James Ireton, Jr. reminds the public, today, that 59 days have passed since he introduced the Salisbury Safe Streets Legislative Package. The package was introduced to the public and given to City Council on Monday, August 2nd, 2010. This means City Council has had 59 days to place this on a Work session agenda and Council President, Louise Smith, has yet to do so. Mayor Ireton urges the public, in the wake of the current wave of violence, to contact Mrs. Smith and demand that the legislative package get a hearing. The mayor has asked that the package have an up or down vote by Thanksgiving of this year.

I've read the package. It's not "100%" so Ireton shouldn't be insisting on a total yes or no vote.
But I agree with him Louise Smith needs to get off her queenly horse and get the council busy hammering out what needs to be changed.
That woman has shown no leadership on anything and needs to get to it before someone else gets shot.
Sign me,
Angry in the Bury (fits, doesn't it)
Kinda reminds me of Obama and congress.
shes waiting for slick willie to return to his seat.
Mayor Ireton has never said he's not open to negotiation. At least, I've never read of him saying that here or anywhere else.
He never said it was take-it-or-leave-it. He said it needed to be discussed and voted upon by Thanksgiving. He anticipated the council would schedule work sessions, modify the bill if needed and vote on it within four months. Not an unreasonable timetable at all.
Louise Smith isn't even willing to schedule a discussion of what she and Shanie Shields find so abhorrent about the bill. That's obstructionism of the worst kind. At least Congressional Republicans show up to vote "NO" on everything, no matter how vital to the nation's interest.
Want Safe Streets? Hire police officers!!! (more than 4) Its what they do!!!
Fruitland Generic, you said it all in the last paragraph. Regardless of what Ireton says or things at this point, Smith has a duty to get this done, one way or the other.
Want safe streets give Chief Barkley more officers and let him do what he knows how do to best!!Mayor Iriton needs to stop micro managing the Cheif and let him do his job
They need to hire a minimum of 30 new police officers!
All you people screaming for 30 more police officers need to scream at Louise Smith and Shanie Shields. They have supported nothing for our police officers. Nothing!
And how will these cops be paid for?
Isn't there something you can do about this Louise Smith's dereliction of duty because that's what it is.
