State Police Investigating After Woman Claims Troopers Teased Her Son After His Boat Fell Off Its Trailer On Route 50

EASTON, Md. (WJZ) — Maryland State Police have launched an internal investigation into whether troopers teased a Marydel man after his boat fell off his trailer on Route 50 earlier this month. The man, Chris Bailey, later took his own life.

Jane Bailey claimed that troopers were laughing at her son and took video after they responded to a report saying his boat had fallen off the pick-up trailer on May 18 along Route 50.

“Four Maryland state troopers showed up. He asked them to give him a hand lifting it so he could get it out of the road. The laughed at him. The surrounded him and pulled out their cell phones taking videos and laughing at him posting on Facebook live the redneck kid trying to lift a boat,” Bailey wrote on Facebook.

Bailey said Chris had spent the entire winter fixing up the boat and dreamed of being a successful crabber. On the 18th, he took the boat down to Dorchester County on his new truck and went out to crab hoping to fulfill orders he took for Memorial Day weekend. But on his way back home, his boat fell off his trailer into the middle of Route 50. Bailey said when the troopers showed up they laughed instead of helping her son and told him to call a towing company — who demanded $3500 on the spot to tow the boat.

FOIA the Troopers cameras and cell phone and text communications through dispatch ALSO how can one cop investigate another ??? There needs to be a civilian review board.

She posted that the troopers put it on Facebook live. Has anyone confirmed that they've seen this live video? Were there witnesses that cooberate mom's story because it sounds like the police department has witnesses that cooberate their side.

Unfortunately I think the son had more problems than this boat fiasco and mom is trying to find answers for her son's suicide. I can't imagine her despair and probably some guilt that she did not or could not help her son before he took his life.

I had an ex wife who always saw everything in a negative light. If for instance someone chuckled about something she would swear they laughed uncontrollably & made fun of her.Her story does not feel right to me.

I feel for the family of the young man but whether or not police laughed at him and Bradshaw"s Towing was overpriced isn't the issue.

How many of us have had to go home with our tails between our legs because of workplace managers humiliating us? What about being dressed down by excessively harsh military officers and non-coms?
Didn't we eventually suck it and move on, maybe waiting on fate to avenge us?

This young man had terrible issues beforehand and then passed his problems to his family for doing such a selfish thing, and that goes double for the ones who found him dead.

The tow company showed up with a rollback that would have been $300 but he insisted on a $1500/hour giant crane so it wouldn't scratch the bottom. He could have put some new gel coat on for less than that if he knew what he was doing but he didn't. He didn't know how to put the boat on the trailer, he didn't know how to fix up the engine. Even great watermen can lose everything with a little bad luck but this man went all in knowing nothing and without extra savings that every waterman needs to get through the tough times. I certainly feel sorry for the families loss and what the man must have been going through but to blame others for his death I find absolutely DISCUSTING. To post on Facebook demanding money or you will ruin the company that gave him $1500 OFF their going rate I find DISCUSTING. To assume that it is the polices job to gather the required people to lift a waterlogged boat, or to control traffic while he sees if he can find friends to show up, or for a tow company to send operators out in a nearly million dollar piece of equipment to do pro bono work is RIDICULOUS. To accuse the police of taunting him in the street or the tow company posting a picture of the job (which they do for every big job) just to ridicule him I find highly unlikely.
Ms Baily this should have been a time to remember your son's life but YOU have turned it into a MEDIA CIRCUS and now this will be his legacy. You should be ashamed.

How is this News ? Did someone run into his ill secured boat and die ? Has there been an autopsy ? This whole driveling thing just reeks of being unprepared and unknowledgeable.

Media circus?
Teaching people to treat each other with kindness is never a media circus.

He "lead-footed" that new truck and dumped the boat at the intersection, racing away from the light. Left the boat at the starting line. Yes, probably the term "redneck" was floated around when the troopers arrived. And it was probably a little funny what that young man did to himself and his boat with his stupidity. And to think he was going to get Troopers to lift a 1500 lb boat up on the trailer, well that just wasn't going to happen. They don't get paid to do that, and there was no danger to anybody's life or property that would require them to. The situation was totally the fault of the young driver, and he was responsible for the cost of cleaning up the mess that he made. Mom doesn't want to accept her son was at fault, and caused the situation he found himself in. Hard way to learn that lapses in judgement have consequences and costs associated with them. And her son killed himself, no one did it for him, and nobody made him do it. Mom needs to blame the party responsible for all the "bad luck" (her son), then forgive him. As to all the things Troopers have to respond to, this one probably was funny to them. They see a lot of stupid things that the public does. Blasting the trailer out from under the boat was probably their laugh for the day. It was just a stupid thing for the boy to do. There was no malice on the Troopers part. Suicide is always unfortunate, but again. The son did it to himself. He obviously wasn't thinking about his mom or his family. Her trying to make the troopers the issue in her son's death is just wrong.

You are totally right. She has publicized her son't stupidity and stupid act for all to see. She should have left well enough alone. And she's not looking too good either, trying to blame the Troopers that have to respond to the mess her son made, or the tow company for not cleaning up the non-conventional "tow" for a song and dance. Her son is responsible for everything that happened to him, his boat, his truck, and his "dream" business, and his suicide. Bad decisions lead to bad results. Maybe callous to some, but true. Mom needs to forgive and try to forget what her son did.

Can we get names?

Good luck. There is no FOIA for someone's personal cell phone. Any communication via radio or MDT, yes. Personal phone, no.

Anonymous said...

My condolences to the family. Appears he was never showed how to tow a boat safely. Was the boat secured by a strap across the middle to stop it from going off the side? Was the boat secured by a strap from the trailer to the hook on the front of the boat?

Lot of BS just to avoid the obvious.

Police protect and serve. Yes or No?

Police imprison and tax. Yes or No?

Wake up people. The police/system are is out of control with power corruption greed etc... Its rare to find a good cop, the whole batch is bad your lucky to find one good apple. Most wont even shake a citizens hand, try it one day.

Respect the person for the person, not becuase of a group they associate themselves with.

Troopers suck. They can not fill a class anymore. They started hiring midgets like Lewis and company h

This is a very painful time for the family and they are lashing out. It is all very sad.

I'm sure the young man was very distraught to have had his boat come off the trailer -in the middle of an intersection - on Memorial Day weekend. What a terrible scene for all involved.

Those trying to manage the incident were doing the best they could. I can just imagine the traffic and the reaction of the passers-by. Trying to find a quick solution would have been priority.

Everyone should take a breath, stop being so quick to judge and accept that sometimes bad situations are just that - bad situations. Sadly, this man had underlying problems that were far deeper than his boat coming off a trailer.
Hope he has found peace.

I'm sorry for the families loss but from the little info I have seen, besides her story, it doesn't seem that things happened like she is claiming. I understand this is a touchy subject right now so that's all I will say at this time.

Anonymous said...

Even if this story is untrue, I understand why so many people would believe it. I have had experiences with police all other this country due to my employment and there are some who act less than honorable and friendly. I think everyone can relate a story about a "bad cop" they had the misfortune of meeting.

Agree

we rush to judgement like Democrats

due process is in order

Democrats always make ludicrous accusations and you are guilty till proven innocent.....that's not how it works

let's wait and see all the facts

in my experience those who conduct investigations in the State Police are very hardcore and relentless on the accused staff

let's watch the show

I stand by 1:15. He had to have major problems. I can see the police teasing him not making fun of him. I don't know I wasn't there. However, if toe towing company was gouging him, that should be looked into by his mother.

Anonymous said...

Why would you want to be a "cop" when everbody hates you. No respect. Always at fault. Give them a break. Not all cops are bad. If you break the law it isn't the cops fault. It is yours.

9:51 they kinda did it to themselves with the way they treat the public. Nothing worse then getting pulled over for some BS that they the Kops get away with minute after minute of every day! total BS!
time for all you kop sympathizers try and tell us this bs don't happen?

Its a sad story, but I have to agree. This young man had more going on and as usual, the mother is ready to assign blame.

Inappropriate yes, but not actionable. You are taking away the seriousness of abuse of power with this stupid claim of I was teased. There are some officers tazing people multiple times while they are on the ground and posing no threat. Now that is legit actionable claim. If your a officer and reading this, I would not pay the price for a fellow inappropriate cowboy officers behavoir. Goodluck with the thin blue line bs from the 1970s ideology handbook. I have nothing against officers my son is a dedicated state trooper but he is realistic and he says he would not cover for anybody at all none. He is my real hero.

Anonymous said...

Why are you worried about your phones. You should be more than glad to show your phones to clear yourself of wrong doing. Its not a crime to video or laugh but the officers should be monitored going forward if they still want to be a officer.

Anonymous said...

It's because of no accountability, officers in charge of the fate of other officers that's a joke. Never understood internal affairs. Next time I get a ticket I'll go to court and say it's ok my wife has cleared me of all charges lol.

Anonymous said...

troopers investigate themselves! not to sure how that's gonna turn out are we? total bs! how about an independent citizens review board in all case of potential police misconduct?
long past time for these types of boards for all police departments. We know you are incapable of policing your own! it's only the citizens who get charged!

Anonymous said...

Obviously no one posting has had experience with Internal Affairs. They are VERY hard on their own as they find questionable behavior a stain on their agency and law enforcement in general.

Why do you think they are referred to as "the rat squad"? It isn't because they go easy on their own!

Anonymous said...

100% true!

Anonymous said...

Are you a drug dealer 8:20

Anonymous said...

9:38 even the rat squad can be gotten to. They have friends in high places. The citizens are left to look our for themselves! Whqat's the matter? afraid of some competent oversight with no vested interest other then citizens safety??
