Newark Ticketing Drivers Who Give Money To Panhandlers

NEWARK (CBSNewYork) – You may want to think twice before giving money to panhandlers in Newark.

Police there will now be ticketing drivers they say are posing safety risks and delaying traffic by stopping to give money.

“People are well-meaning and want to help, but this is a safety issue,” Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said. “We have panhandlers wading into traffic at busy exit ramps off Route 280 or on McCarter Highway, which jeopardizes their own health. We had a female pedestrian killed on McCarter Highway just a few weeks ago.”

Police have issued 90 summonses in just the last few weeks. That comes with a $50 fine plus court costs.

Pretty sure that's unconstitutional.

Makes a lot more sense than Jake Day's giving them jobs! And somebody please tell out local weather/news stations that after 13 days of Tornado warnings and severe storms that if we really get a real warning no one is going to listen like the little boy that cried wolf. Make sure it is imminent for an area before you just bounce it around. They act like they want a tornado so bad just so they can make it on the national news. Everyone is turning them off and then not be warned of the real thing.

2:12 it is un-constitutional but no one including you will stand up and fight it so, who gives a shit any way... You all think cops are hero's for the corrupt shit they do and for doing the job they are paid to do... They don't go above and beyond helping citizens or they would't ticket anyone giving a poor man money... See what they come up with if you just walk up to the pan handle and give him money... they will make up a law or ordnance to site you on... Or like with the 1st amendment auditors, they have to call in 6 of their buddies, huddle up in a corner somewhere and TRY to figure out what law they can make stick, yeah that sounds like real hero's there...

I don't carry cash so they are shit out of luck unless I have some change in the cup holder.

I don't think the Constitution says you can stop in traffic for no reason.

Panhandlers, Tramps, Bums, Hobos all of these cretins need to be locked up! It is against the law to be a bum, it is covered under the Vagrant laws.

@2:49 You don't know me or what I will or won't do. What you see (a coward) when you look in the mirror is only applicable to you, not everyone else.

I must say I agree with you 7:50. Hypocrite 2:49 is quick to call people out and assume they are not doing anything to help fix any local and national problems we are facing. However he has not once shared with readers what he is contributing to alleviate negative situations we face daily
