(LAUREL, Md.) — One Maryland police officer is being applauded after he compassionately responded to a young mother he found shoplifting for her son.
The Laurel Police Department told ABC News that rookie officer Bennett Johns responded to a call at a local grocery store July 22.
There he learned a 20-year-old mother, who was with her young son, “was caught by security attempting to steal two packs of diapers,” a statement from the department added.
“After she purchased some groceries she did not have enough money left over to buy the diapers,” the statement continued. “Officer Johns considered the situation and then made the decision to purchase the diapers out of his own pocket so that the young child would not suffer.”

That's a very thoughtful officer.
I'm sure the department will try to jam him up for not taking the proper course of action. This is awesome on his part but I'm sure his agency will find a way to find him at fault for not taking proper enforcement action.
718 yes considering he is making just about poverty. I notice the haters have nothing to say. So typical.
Screw that. He should arrest her and do his job. He should be fined and suspended for buying her crap while at work. Cops are not here to be a social program they are to enforce the laws. Courts decide if a law is broken and your legislative branch does the social program making!!!
Sounds like you have the hate on lock down, 8:37.
Ditto....9:08
No wonder the public looks down on police. They should be good to the community, but don't be playing basketball in the hood, cleaning up debris or furnishing tricycles.
Wow 9:08. Let's hope that YOU never fall on hard times! This woman wasn't stealing steak and lobsters buddy. It was DIAPERS.
Mmmm, Theft is a crime.... stealing is stealing
If you can't buy diapers why did you have a kid? Geez.
That is what cops are supposed to do!!!!! Serve and protect not beat and abuse and take your money...
Arresting someone for a misdemeanor is a discretionary thing. The cop did what he felt was right at the time.
Children who are treated bad by people like you, become nasty adults. Be kind to our kids, help them grow into good people. Kudos to mr. Officer for recognizes this.
