Free tuition for Somerset grads going to Wor-Wic gets Hogan’s OK

PRINCESS ANNE — Legislation that provides free tuition and fees to Somerset County high school students who attend Wor-Wic Community College full-time starting in the fall semester immediately after graduation was signed into law April 3 by Gov. Larry Hogan.

The eligibility is for up to three years, or until the completion of an associate’s degree, whichever comes first.

Students are required to complete a FAFSA federal student financial aid form each year, maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, have full-time credit-hour attendance each semester and not be convicted of a felony. The effective date is July 1 — in time for the Class of 2017 to take advantage of this benefit. Books and materials are excluded.

I'm not usually in support of freebies, but damn, Somerset county kids need a break. and if a little money on education is the break they need, go for it. Don't hold back a kid who wants to further their education.

4:40 - I agree with you on this one!!

I like it except for one thing, there should be a requirement that NO cell phones allowed on campus for anyone.

4:44 I agree. Bye, can't wait to have another democratic governor.

Do they have to be here legally?
Is that checked?

Quit with the handouts !! It is NOT free the taxpayers are forced to foot the bill, while not being able to send their own kids to college.

Same thing Culver has approved. As a Senior Citizen I want no taxes taken out of my retirement / SSI checks. I need a break. I raised my children to adulthood and at my age I should not be responsible for others children. I am already forced to pay for their pre-K -12. I totally disagree with this use of tax dollars. They are healthy and can do what I had to do work and get an education at the same time.

So you rather have a liberal that will keep illegals, government regulations, and raise taxes even more? Hogan will keep my vote

Why are my county taxes paying for somerset kids WTF!!

Anonymous said...

How many of those kids have the smarts to go anywhere for college? Letting them all in is WRONG and a waste of money. Letting the top percent in that could go and cannot afford it is OK. Means testing here folks - not handouts!

Handouts are the Democrat way of buying votes! Remember the last eight years!?

To be completely fair, Wor-wic SHOULD be classed the same a High School and cost the same. Most of their courses now teach the same level of education that was taught in high school back in the '30s and '40s.

Everyone loved it when Culver did the same in Wicomico ?

Confused

Anonymous said...

Wait what? Somerset contributes nothing but when wor wic struggles they stick their hand out to wicomico. Who is paying for this because nothing is free?

Anonymous said...

Wor Wic is in financial trouble ,so
what do our Leaders do but let the tax
payers foot the bill to get people into
the college!!!
Oh my God, I am so tired of our Governing
Body of S--- heads!

Yeah, and the stuff taught in high schools in the 30's and 40's was taught to 5th and 6th graders in the 20's and 30's.
Ever saw that 6th grade exam from the early 1900's? Most COLLEGE grads couldn't pass it today.
We just need more inclusion and diversity, standards that are not slanted to performance and ability, and more emphasis on self-esteem than accomplichment.
More history and liberal arts degrees.
Its racism and hate that have made us stupid and lazy.
I can't actually back that up with any facts or studies, but I got "racism" in the picture, right? Right?
Nailed it.

NO everyone did not love it when Culver did the same. In fact this along with some of Culvers other actions will likely cost him the next election. This voter and the 6 members of our family will not repeat their vote for Culver in the next election nor will we be voting for Charles Otto whom cosponsored this bill along with Jim Mathis.

Somehow I can't swallow that this is FOR THE CHILDREN....

So called conservatives doing their liberal thing.

What is it about these people that run as conservatives and then turn liberal. Culver, Otto, Hogan. Charles I am disappointed and I will not be spending any more of my money at Farmers and Planters.
