Supporters guard veterans memorial after city pulls cross

A veterans memorial in Minnesota lost one cross but gained more than a dozen others -- and a security detail -- over the weekend after supporters argued that the city caved to the Freedom from Religion Foundation.

The memorial at Belle Plaine Veterans Memorial Park showed a silhouette of a soldier kneeling in front of a cross that served as a headstone for a fellow soldier's grave, Fox 9 reported. Workers installed it last summer, but opponents were quick to argue that it violated the separation of church and state because it appeared on public property.

The city and its veterans club reportedly agreed to get rid of the cross last week. Still, supporters of veterans said they were outraged.

Why is it that I (as a Free Thinker aka, Athiest to some, and a veteran) can find no harm in having this memorial? Even though I do not subscribe to any religion I am not going to tell someone else that they are wrong simply because it is on public property. Things/Memorials like this bring joy and comfort to a large portion of society so I think that this whole thing is silly at best.

If I have no problem with it then why should anyone else? It is the same as "live and let live". No one is being subjugated or having a crime committed against them.

10:49 AM to answer your question... This is how you bring down america, take what was great and make it not so great... Have everything turned upside down and inside out... Plus no one has enough tits or balls to stand up for their rights, freedoms and anything else... But when you have someone who does, like these people, you see how the cowards back down and let you have your rights and freedoms...

@10:48

I can tell you why. By making the monument overtly Christian, it disregards the contributions of all Americans, and singles out only one sect of Americans for recognition.

America is not a theocracy. America is not a nation made up of only Christians. Many people of many faiths or lack there of have defended our freedoms and even given the ultimate sacrifice for that freedom.

To make it overtly Christian perverts the very nature of the display.

One question no one ever seems to want to answer is Why? Why do these monuments HAVE to have Christian iconography? WHY is it forced on the public when it clearly does not represent all of America? Until this is answered, I see no reason that these religious monuments or nods to a religion should be tolerated.

12:02 a cross on public property does not violate the Constitution as written. It is the interpretation of it being skewed. It states that our government shall not make any laws which establish one religion as the official religion of the United States. England had done this where you had to join the Church of England by law. The founding fathers wanted to be sure the same did not happen here. A cross or the star of David on public property does not establish any law saying you must join a certain church or religious belief. It really is that plain and simple. Idiots and attorneys have turned it into something it was never intended to be!

Thankfully, our courts disagree with you, and it's why these types of displays are coming down all over the country. It is because they DO establish a religion.

1:59 it states "shall establish no laws" a cross or other religious symbol does not establish a law forcing you to practice a religion, period! AND this is what our founders meant "no law". Get educated and study history you might learn exactly why our Constitution and Bill of rights say what they do without needing a literal nor slanted interpretation of them.
