Report: Stingray Device Can Drop, Jam Innocent Calls

Device creates chilling effect on free speech

A once-secret device used by law enforcement to track an individual’s cell phone location in real-time can also be used to drop or jam innocent calls, according to privacy activists.

Privacy activists have long expressed concern over law enforcement’s use of the Stingray, a suitcase-sized device that mimics a cellphone tower, allowing law enforcement to track an individual’s cellphone in real time.

Cell-tower simulators were originally designed for use on the battlefield, allowing military units to track their opponent’s movements.

Law enforcement agencies that use the Stingray are required by the FBI to sign a non-disclosure agreement banning them from revealing its use in public, even during legal proceedings.

The defense contractor that produces the Stingray, Harris Corp., is required to notify the FBI whenever it sells the device to a law enforcement agency.

And it was recently judged to be unconstitutional for police to use stuff like stingray's without a warrant.

There's a vehicle roaming the highways that looks like a SHA vehicle, doesn't have any markings except unusual devices on the sides and rear and drives the speed limit or a little slower. Windows are tinted...

It's funny how all the local LEO couldn't post enough comments when Fisher got busted or WCSO purchased their two new Harley's but when something like this comes up and they get noticed it's all hush hush

WCSO doesn't have a stingray. Too small a dept. and not enough big fish. Possible that FEDs might bring one in to area if actively targeting someone like the cigarette brothers in OC dealing in millions of dollars.

Didn't say WCSO had a stingray merely stated they are awfully quiet about the illegal surveillance. They DO know a lot about that. They've been known to set up illegal cameras in people's property gathering info. If you want to see some of the vehicles they use to do do some of this go down Naylor mill rd directly across from softball complex they have a nice little office and fenced off compound there

The feds have these at their disposal and all you paranoid idiots that think they will use it on your cell phone you are sadly mistaken- You are not that important and unless you are committing serious felonies that would attract the attention of the feds this device has absolutely no affect on your life. Go back to sleep.

@8:12 do you honestly believe that we would think of Mike LEWIS wanted such a piece of equipment the WCSO wouldn't have one?? Any and every new piece of technology pertaining to police work they have!!

Everyone wants to take away police powers until another terror attack and then they wonder why did it happen!

They have one just put on on Parkside High schools grounds... It is that big white looking sign... Don't be fooled, they asked for it to look that way but it is indeed a stingray and what better place to put it than on a high school lot where kids go every day all day texting and what not...

People like Mike LEWIS will absolutely do whatever he wants as far as police business. He doesn't see any boundaries, he definitely thinks he's above the laws in which he tries to inforce
