$73,000 To Move Phone Lines?

Just thought I would share with you some of the shenanigans that Verizon is trying to pull with the fire company. As many of you know, we are in the process of trying to get our new fire station built. Permits, permits and more permits have caused the delay for the most part but here is the real kicker...............Verizon wants to charge the fire company $73,000 to move the lines from one side of the street to the other. YES, $73,000 bucks!! Verizon has a monopoly in this area and there is no other company that we know of that can do this. We are open for carnival 16 nights out of 365 nights. Between that and pony penning is how we make our money to purchase $500k fire trucks and $200k ambulances not to mention all the items that are needed to stock those vehicles. Turn out gear per firefighter cost around $2k per, stretcers in the ambulance cost $14k, yes, $14k, radios and pagers per volunteer cost $1,200 and then there is insurance, power bills etc...............Where does Verizon come up with these figures to charge a 5013c non profit organization that much money to literally move lines less than 75 yards? Please share this with everyone so they can see how Verizon is raping the consumer. This is awful!!

Ask for a cost breakdown.

Why can't a private contractor do that?

This service would be tax deduction for them. Verizon has gotten just as big as the old C&P and the other communications companies were when the Feds stepped in and made them break-up into smaller companies because they were monopolizing. Now these companies are just as big and joining in mergers to control the communication industry. I would remember their tactics when they need EMS and Fire services. The cost of responding would be higher than normal since the conditions would be more hazardous than a normal situation.

Verizon is the whore of the telecommunication companies

Yep, get a private company to do it. If it's just across the street then it should be a cinch.

Should they do pro bono work? Utilities typically don't reuse poles so likely all new infrastructure in addition to man and equipment hours. Did vz make request or customer? Who should pay for it? Agreed, 73k is not chump change but clearly there needs to be a fee for the work as it obviously involves more than a simple service installation. No, don't work for them so please criticize with diff approach ;)

2:02 That's ridiculous

If they want the lines moved why shouldn't they pay for it? If I as Joe citizen wanted tyem moved I would have to pay for it.

I must have missed the portion of the post where they say it should be done for free...

If you total up cost of the equipment, materials and labor necessary to accomplish this - without service interruption or traffic hazards, you'll find that most private contractors wouldn't want to bid on such a job - not for this price.

The article also mentions the cost of their own insurance. This is not an insignificant expense for utility work. Road crews of any type are some of the most hazardous jobs around.

Cluelessness. Stick to putting fires out.

Anonymous said...

agree with 4:47, this guy is clueless. why don't you go and just sell a couple more of those ponies. other fire departments would kill to have a revenue stream like the carnival and pony auction that they have.

They should be ashamed of themselves---
that's price gouging!

Easy to solve Common Core math problem:

Q) If you are moving phone lines from one spot to another, and you charge $1,000 per foot, how much will you charge to move them 75 feet? Remember to round down by 2K to make it look like a more rigorous calculation was involved.

A) 75 x 1,000 - 2 = 73,000

Good for Verizon. Whoever sent this is a complete moron. Boring machines, trench ers, trucks, insurance, workmans comp, permits to do the job,labor....ect are not cheap either Mr Crybaby. Obvious he has never had to run a business especially in this day and age. Stick to your gravy job of putting fires out and the pony swim and selling cotton candy and leave the real work to the lineman and entrepreneurs.

Have the city of Chincoteague begin charging an "access/use fee" for VZ's plant to be using city land and rights of way. Not just this small area of network but ALL of VZ's plant/hardware/network that exists in Chincoteague.., hell why not make it county wide?

9:12 Stick to collecting your check every month and waiting for your little yellow ID card to refill. 12:20 they already pay tons of fees so go back to sleep. Now do any of you know what's involved in moving these lines from one side of the street to the other? Does the moron who wrote this who is trying to get sympathy?

You sound like a current VZ management employee. Anyone who would defend this degenerate customer raping company is obviously someone who took time off from crying about Hillary's defeat to comment here.
"..already pay tons of fees..." not enough is how most of us see it.
"..know what's involved in moving these lines.." Yes I do know.., VZ's problem is that no one left working there does., they'd have to hire the work out to some contractor who does know how to.
"Does the moron who wrote this blah blah blah sympathy?" It sounds to me like you are...
VZ deserves no sympathy., they're animals.

Ok, they have a nice source of income from work that THEY put into it. What does that have to do with how much Verizon is willing to gouge? I am not saying the work should be done for free, but you can't tell me that Verizon doesn't screw over their customers. If you side with VZW, you probably aren't a customer of theirs.

$73K doesn't sound like an unreasonable amount to move phone lines. There's poles to purchase and install, and lines to be re-routed and spliced (thousands of individual wires), cost of the new wiring, and removal of the old poles. $73K is not unreasonable, at all. No more unreasonable than a $500K fire truck, or a $14K stretcher.

Figures.......the phone company have Raped us for years
along with the cable and electric companys....nothing new !!

everyone has a right to their own opinion however once again the public is not getting all the facts from the media or from the fire company, please wait until we hear both sides of the story, think some will be surprised at the facts

They forgot to mention that they have their "old" fire station listed on the market for 1.2 MILLION dollars. Does the word "hipocracy" mean anything. So, you want to "rape" the public by selling your old fire station for 1.2 million but want to complain about Verizon charging you 73k to move phone lines. Lastly, before posting public information on Facebook from your "business", as a spokesperson, please spell and grammar check the post. Sounding unintelligent and "hick like" is an embarrassment to you as well as the fire department. Have some pride. People will take you more seriously.

2:33 your name speaks volumes.
Get a private company to move Verizon linesπŸ€” Yeah without a clue, seems like it fits you. Should change the rebel to moron though.

Anonymous said...

Verizon cost to move those lines are a little out of whack. to move line whether power or telephone looks like this. 1 pole is 575.00 for a 40 foot class one. man hour rate is 125.00 per man. total job time is 4 hours. equipment to do the job is 75.00 an hour. which would be a bucket truck and a pole cat.
So a 3 man crew at 125.00 per man x4 hours plus 2 pieces of equipment at 75.00 x 4 hours plus 1 pole does not add up to 75,000 dollars. People fuzzy math is how Verizon makes there money.

Remember, these are the people who "lost" a sickly pony in a lot the size of a large suburban backyard. They can't understand the maths that Verizon figured up.

9:05 I guess you did the site survey and then the estimate. Go lay down. You spit numbers as if you know what your talking about and you don't. To sheeple maybe but not to people who actually know. Oh you forgot the estimate for permits,splicers,flaggers...ect. Must put out fires for a living. Go back to bed.

1214 even with the permits splicers and flaggers you are only at 27,000! go back in your hole and keep thinking of what you don't know. i have done this work for over 30 years. you sir are a legend in your own mind!

Anonymous said...

3:41 Yeah okay. 30 years and still not retired, must be because your just not ready yet huh? So Mr. BS I mean Mr. 30 years how many poles are being moved how much underground is involved what is the fiber count that needs to be spliced how long are we going to need flaggers and a road crew is there any copper that needs to be spliced how many permits are we going to have to get? You have no idea and neither do I, but I bet that a site survey was done and an estimate was submitted based on what the survey said. You should have retired 30 years ago. FOH

Why is this clown being so hostile towards us? No one here said anything derogatory yet this guy jumps on you like he's a union member or something. Just my two cents.

Did I not tell you to change your name to Moron without a clue? Not a union member I just cannot stand stupid comments and you say some of the dumbest things. Now go back and read what you posted and change your name to Moron without a clue and nobody asked for your two cents. Believe me you need to save all the cents for yourself. Clown 🀑 out
