A Viewer Writes: Police Department Web Sites

Have you noticed the web sites for local PD's

None of them seem to keep up to date, and designs on each are pretty poor, there are a few that are not too bad. If information is to find, not all are easy to navigte

1. http://princessannepolice.com - not to bad, actually updated regularly

2. http://www.wicomicosheriff.com - One of the better ones, little easier to get around

3. http://www.salisburypd.com - pretty cheesy for having their own IT person

5. https://www.delmarpolice.com/ - as small as Delmar is, still better than SPD

6. Crisfield - doesnt have one

7. http://oceancitymd.gov/oc/departments/police/ They put some time work in this, looks great

9. http://www.berlinmdpd.org/ Words cant express how bad

Police departments could add so much by helping residence out with information - You should take time look at some of these, list them and get opinions from others. PD's should not be using Social Media to reach people.

Not making excuses but I know a few of these agencies have facebook pages that are updated daily. Still doesn't help people that refuse to use social media.

What's your point? Should they invest more resources in Web development instead of law enforcement?

omg! What a disgrace! Terrible! There's just no excuse for this! What on earth were they thinking? Police websites should all be the industry standard! How can we fight crime with crappy websites? Criminals have better websites. We're all DOOMED!

I think the point is people look for information, either make it easy to find - or dont publish it at all

Since I am the one that does most of the press releases here is my take on the local police department websites. I think using social media is fine for getting the information out to people. I just wish when something happens they would do a better job of alerting people.

The Princess Anne Police website is rather new. Wish they had an RSS feed on their press releases. I have requested to be placed on their email list many times. So far no luck.

The WCSO. I dislike their website totally. The press release are not even on the website. Everything is posted on Facebook. They also refuse to email press releases after many requests. Lots of calls for service but very few press releases.

The SPD posts all their press releases on their website. Even though we can't seem to get them emailed to us at least you know where to find them and they usually post on twitter and Facebook when there is a new release. They also have many calls for service with very few press releases. They post many things on twitter and Facebook about the department but will not post about a missing child.

Somerset County Sheriff posts on Facebook but the website never gets updated and neither does Facebook. At least not with information the community needs.

Delmar Police website is also fairly new. They don't seem to update their press releases and there is no log for calls for service.

Crisfield.....what to say. No website and even though they have email addresses listed on the Town site I have yet to find one that will respond if you send an email. They also do not send out press releases.

I used to like OCPD website before they changed it. They do at least have an RSS feed on their website and the option to get email updates but the email updates are several hours and sometimes days old once they are emailed to you. I unsubscribed from the email updates.

Worcester County Sheriff website I never use.(I don't need to) I get their updates on Facebook and I have to say they do a tremendous job keeping people informed. Not only do they post press releases but road closures, school delays, missing pets or children and also weather updates. If it is happening in Worcester County you will probably see it on their Facebook page. Good Job WOCO Sheriff Office!

While the Town of Berlin keeps people informed. The police website does not. Usually the information comes from the WOCO Sheriff office.

One website that was not mentioned is the Maryland State Police.
They are doing much better lately then they have in the past. You can subscribe to emails and get them in a timely manner. Berlin started sending out the DUI arrests and Salisbury soon followed. I have to say Berlin is on the ball with press releases. You can usually expect to get a press release from them in just a few hours where many other agencies take several hours or days to release information.

Press releases always gather interest on this blog. People want to know what is going on in the area. We can only provide press releases if the local police departments make them readily available and easy for people to find and access.

Howard County Police do a fabulous job. They post things daily letting people know what is going on. If our local police gave us as much information as they give their community we would all know what was going on.
