Ocean City Hotel Must Pay Fine After Removing Bird Nests

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — The Maryland Coastal Bays Program says 14 migratory bird nests that included 40 gull eggs have been illegally removed from a hotel in Ocean City.

Media outlets report that in May, the manager of the Comfort Inn on the Ocean City boardwalk ordered maintenance staff to remove all bird nests from the roof. Some of the eggs were hatching at the time, but MCBP spokeswoman Sandi Smith says none of the birds survived.

For all but three species of migratory birds, house sparrows, pigeons and starlings, removal of nests is a federal offense under the Migratory Bird Treaty. Smith says hotel workers didn’t realize it was illegal to remove the nests.

The Natural Resource Police have ordered the hotel to appear in court and pay a $450 fine.

When you throw nestlings and unhatched eggs into a five gallon bucket and then the dumpster, they generally don't survive.

Oh for the love of God! Ridiculous. What I want to know is how did the DNR find out about this? Probably some environmental terrorist was spying.

Somebody probably just looked into the hotel's dumpster. People get upset when they see baby birds flopping around in the trash.

Sorry, I would not have kept the nests either. Bird poop everywhere.

They probably just didn't know...now they do, and they will pay the fine. Unfortunately, they are now getting threatening and harassing phone calls.

Maybe we need the Eshams to go onto assateague for us and rid the beach of the dreaded plover..
They can barrow my bait bucket.

Unbelievable, not long ago everyone was ready to hang the people with all the dogs in Eden but it's ok to kill baby birds and unborn birds (abortion?) just because they are birds. Such good Christian folks on the shore.

10:23 see....environmental terrorists!

Natural selection would rid the environment of these species eventually. Plovers are doomed by there own habits. #overplovers.

10:23
I will counter balance the threatening phone calls with praise.
Who wouldn't keep their business clean. Some idiot's would let bird dirt drop on and around them before doing anything about it.
I get it that birds have feelings, but take it to the wild life part of town.

You are confusing natural selection with environmental degradation.

We are a nation of laws. If you don't agree with the law then fight for a change. You can't pick and choose the laws you wish to abide by Citizen

World gone plain crazy! Let them nest at my house and see what happens!!

11:07. Seriously? What does any of this have to do with Christians? Bird abortions? What a stupid comment.

1:45 agreed! It's moronic that this is even a law.

People and property are more important than birds.

you bumped your head hugging a tree. Explain to us why a plover would nest on a rooftop far from the waters edge. Here's a hint, plovers make poor choices for nest, even in the most ideal environmental situations. Go ahead defend them and make excuses.

The problem could have been avoided by having anti-bird devices on the roof.

Starlings and pigeons are nuisance animals, and there's no shortage of gulls. This is stupid!

There were no plovers nesting on that building. And again I say you don't know the difference between natural selection and environmental degradation.

No shortage of shorebillies that wanna kills god's creatures because they might poop on the roof.
