A Viewer Writes: Public Safety Issue in Vienna Md.

Feeling a little upset that the small town I call home caved to a farmer who doesn't live IN town, but drives through it! We have had a serious issue with speeding on the busiest most traveled street with numerous children living, playing on and near this street! This town is like Mayberry, all the kids walk, ride bikes, skateboard around town! It may be the only town left where kids are allowed to play freely! 8 months later, after much pushing~ a speed bump went on this busy street! It solved the speeding problem!

At tonight's town meeting an angry well known farmer who lives OUT of town, came in and ran the show! His biggest concern was his family and his money! This speed bump hurt his wife's back, this speed bump could hurt a watermelon, this speed bump was bigger then any rut on his many hundreds of acre farm land, (I call bullshit) this speed bump could damage his farming equipment...are you f'ing kidding me!!

He had the two council members in his pocket before he got there!! For one, the only restaurant in town is owned by one of the council members, and he made it clear he and his whole family spent a lot of money there! He spends his money at the town gas station and at the local car garage...he spends money on everything but the taxes that covers our roads in Vienna!! His opening line was his only concern was for his family and his money!! To hell with the fact Vienna widened the street so said farmers can come down it, to hell with the safety issue of our children and adults who will be no match for the speeding farm trucks that comes flying down that road!! To hell with anything that stands in his way of his need for control in a town he doesn't even live in!! Good job council members for looking out for the towns people that elected you!! Good job to the small minded people who allowed him to bully them!! So proud at this moment to call myself a resident to a town that puts the interest of some ones need to speed through our town and protect their watermelons over the well being of its real residence. Well done!! I hope you take this victory and feel real good about it!!

Above is a photo of the HUGE speed bump that is being removed all to save watermelons....SERIOUSLY!!

Well, first off, why are your children playing in the street? Streets are for driving motor vehicles on. If you keep children in the yard or on a s sidewalk, where they belong, they won't be hit by a car. When I was a child, we rode bikes, skateboards and played outside all the time. No one was ever hit by a car. In fact, we never had head injuries either but now every child has to wear a helmet to prevent head injuries. Ridiculous. Bottom line...educate your children to not play in the road and you have nothing to worry about. Don't inconvenience everyone else because of YOUR selfish actions. Be a parent and parent your children. They shouldn't be walking, riding or playing in the street. Oh, and stop playing victim. That's the problem with society today. Everyone wants to be a victim.

Sounds like this farmer needs to check himself. If it is who I am thinking of he employees a ton of illegals. Funny how these farmers are hypocrites when it comes to the law. Sad times in America

Anonymous said...

Whats wrong here is not just the farmer... It is you the people, you stand there tolerating what these people are doing and have done... You complain but you don't put action behind that and 0+0=0 always... You get nothing form nothing... You can;t get something from nothing... The other part of the problem is that you people don't now how the govt works or people with a lot of money... But keep on complaining it has gotten you so very far right????

Anonymous said...

Wow i hope you have no grand children fool.

Anonymous said...

Greg qusack and pam travers should be ashamed of themselves milles is a dump too.

Anonymous said...

So at one point in time it was felt the town needed the speed bumps. Now because one person has complained the council feels the need to get rid of them. Hey you moron council members it's not what's good for the minority but the majority. It's no wonder the lower shore is a wasteland. The chicken crap fumes seems to have affected the brains of a lot of people. Another thing this farmer needs to dig in his pockets to have the bumps removed if that's what it comes down to.

I have two children but I was smart enough to teach them to not play in traffic. You are the kind of person who lets their child out of a car in Walmart parking lot and just let them amok and make it everyone else's responsibility to avoid them with their car. How about teaching your child not to playing the road and being responsible for them. Keep playing victim.

I have lived in town 20 plus years nothing gets done unless its for millies advantage which greg owns pam runs around thinking she is top medic stick to your job pam your a embaressment.

Seriously 9:32. If people are SPEEDING down that road in an area where people walk and kids play they NEED the speedbump. Or a speed camera. Or a cop to sit there (which the taxpayers would bitch about). You act like every kid in the town is IN the roadway. They could be on the sidewalk or on the grass that borders the roadway. One pothole, blown tire, or mechanical failure and a kid could die because the motorist was traveling too fast. Have you ever traveled over the Vienna bridge? It's like the Indy 500!!

I'm all for farmers. I live in a rural area and am always stuck behind them this time of year. But when you DON'T live in the area keep your mouth shut. Those watermelons wouldn't break if YOU weren't speeding with your load. Sounds like entitlement to me.

Anonymous said...

It is a very small town, and a charming place. Obviously most traffic is locals. If there was so much speeding then locals are probably doing most of it. Don't live there but have been to some town events.

I dislike speed bumps for lots of reasons, and not because I'm flying down any street. I have a car that is unmodified but that rides very low from the factory. So I must tip-toe over every speed bump and in some instances clearance is very tight. So laying this down in the middle of the street doesn't seem very bright. If the street ever gets plowed that will cause another issue.

Someone had to agitate to get it installed. If they'd taken the time to visit with any leadfoot neighbors they could have saved both money and aggravation. That's the Mayberry method.

Anonymous said...

Put a speed camera in and let the farmer pay the town for his speeding.

Anonymous said...

POST the idiot farmers name it sonds like he is paying off local officials.

Kids lives dont matter
Watermelons do.

Its the farmers that are the issue i live outside of town and they fly past my house daily.

Anonymous said...

Disgrace.

Anonymous said...

If speedbumps were the answer we'd have them ever 100 yards on every road. I dislike speed bumps anywhere. I even more dislike parents whom think its normal to let their children run and play in the streets.

Anonymous said...

I hope that farmers paperwork is in order with his illegals ?

I hope no children get hurt the town and farmer will have some splaining too do.

If you have a modified car, there are other routes to take other then Market Street. There were conversations with said farmers and they didn't care to hear about any of it! So please attend the meetings if you live in town and you will know what we are dealing with. I agree to do nothing but complain becomes part of the problem, but when complaining to the council over and over and nothing gets done, they become the problem! They have to first check with all their family, friends and customers to see if the changes are all agreeable to them first!!

Anonymous said...

You keep making this issue about kids playing in the street but there are a lot of locals, young and old, who walk, ride their bikes and walk their dogs. This is NOT a parenting problem! Keep deflecting the real issue and continue to be uneducated!

Anonymous said...

Kids will be kids yku must have been a fun parent.

The worst thing about Vienna is not the speed bump or the farmer,it's the town manager who rides around, peeking into windows and actually entering peoples property. She claims she has a badge and can enter anywhere she wants.I blame Greg only because he and the other commisioners know she does do things that has nothing to do with her or the town.I actually know 2 families that bought houses elsewhere because of this woman.I myself have seen her run stop signs trying to catch up with people and I've heard her actually cursing the old gentleman that owned the old laundry mat.Keep the speed bump, get rid of Mary Jane.I've witnessed every comment I've made here.

Joe please post this up top.

Vienna is a great place to live, except for the arrogance and civic ignorance of the of the two town commissioners. They do not see themselves as commissioners but rather trailer park managers in pursuit of personal awe-inspiring grander and profit. We who live in the town have no say in the government.

Who has a say? Apparently a wealthy farmer who do not live in town but drops "philanthropic" $s around the "right" places in town. And I must state that there are many good families farming in this area who go out of there way to be good neighbors in and out of the town. The one commissioner also listens to imaginary phone calls that keep her awake all night agreeing with her innovative insights into any problems and/or solutions in town affairs. Her imaginary supporters (who some how can never make it to a town meeting) love how no matter what the issue she can create 96 reasons why the problem cannot be fixed or avoided. Our other commissioner of course is a doer...if it is profitable to him. If one of his customers complains about children being the reason to inconvenience them getting through town as fast as possible, then literally throw the kids under the wheels.
Ironically, the town is spending money to rebuild the playground and basketball courts for the kids. Sadly the kids have to dodge idiots who believe traffic stop signs, speed limits and common courtesy do not apply to them.
Making a joke of children's safety is one problem. Another problem is that town tax payers have no say in the town. If a citizen attends a town meeting and expresses a view point or offer a constructive opinion/suggestion they are immediately labeled as a pugnacious malcontent. Mean while underground drinking water pipes still ooze into the streets, street light remain out, and the game of Grand Theft Auto is played for real on town streets.
Thankfully Capt. John Smith did not have the 16th Century vision of today's commissioners, Vienna would not be. The town has so many opportunities but requires joining the 21st Century and that means...

The issue isn't town officials or kids in the street, its people breaking traffic laws by speeding.Thats the issue that needs to be enforced. I was one of several town residents that pleaded with the town for a solution. Pam , Greg and Russel were all willing to listen and discuss options. I am sorry the town did not get the results it hoped for with the installation of the bump but am confident that other options will be visited. Insulting peoples character is unnecessary and lacks class.Pam has answered several ambulance calls at my home and has always been professional. I'd go so far to say she is very much a life saver. As far as Greg and Millie, I was employed at Millies for more than 14 years without issue. Why this needs to be directed in such a way to speak of their character I don't know but its not going to help the real issue at hand , speeding through town. P.S. I'm not a local and I am not related to anyone that was born here so my opinion is 100% unbiased.

it seems like if the speed bump did any damage to her car , it would likely because it was run over at a high rate of speed. if slow down and ease over it like you are supposed to it shouldn't be a problem

This must be the coward farmer.

Anonymous said...

Middle street needs a speedbump also indy 500.

Anonymous said...

You want a speed bump then move to a trailer park. Bumps have no business being on public roads. Your real complaint is about traffic and how it will continue to grow on this main road. A bump will only cause more traffic noise and hazards...stop n go, braking, accelerating, thumps and bangs and rattles, total unnessary wear and tear on vehicles, trailers and the roads themselves. Growing and increasing traffic is the nature of the beast for all growing towns/areas.Bumps are as much a hazard as potholes!!

Anonymous said...

This is not about trashing some ones name or whining...this is about a solution was put into place and it was working. Then a local farmer that throws his money at the local restaurant owner and throws his weight at the other council member and they cave. The outcome was in place before the meeting ever took place. The whole town should get a say!! The one councilor abstained from voting to put them in, but yet was able to vote to take them out. This leaves a very unfair advantage considering there is one Mayor and two councilmen. One puts it to motion and the other one seconds it...end of discussion.. We need to either see to it that the one who receives and offers services to our locals is off the board, or we add one or two more to it.
I do not agree with any one assassinating some ones character, but I do agree that if you make a decision you need to be held accountable. The decision was made to put them in, and it was unpopular with some and they made the decision to take them out...End of story!!

I've seen farm hands toss watermelons harder when picking and loading them than how they would be tossed around in the back of this farmers truck after hitting that tiny speed bump...that is as long as said farmer was going the posted speed limit!

Anonymous said...

I wonder if this same farmer ever goes to Sams club or drives behind Walmart. Does he complain about the speed bumps there also? Funny we tried to get them put in our neighborhood and they wouldn't do it. Here is a tip for the farmer. Don't hit the speed bump at a fast speed or dead on. Go over them in a slight angle and you will avoid the pain you say your wife experiences. I thought everyone knew that trick.

Anonymous said...

1050 your a real tool its about slowing vehicles down so that if a car does have to stop your child has a chance to get out of the way instead of being mowed down you are probably one of these parents that let there kids out till midnight unsupervised but when something happens to your angels you will cry holy hell, loser.

OMG..the town has a police sub-station that is not manned on the same street, they have a beautification program with dead trees planted in the road (grant money) and maybe 30 cars may travel the road with the speed bump daily, town ordinances that are not enforced and everyone has a opinion. In truth it's a nice little town where a load of bad decisions have been made, but before you start "bitching and complaining" why don't you become involved within the community, stop the name calling, and voice your opinions at a town hall meeting, (you might not get any satisfaction) but that*s a starting point!!!
SPEED BUMP INDEED,WHAT NEXT TOWN COUNCIL??

Most of the comments on this post have nothing to do with the speedbump...grown people on here trashing others like a bunch of middle school bullies. Its shameful!!! Clearly based on the recent election there is plenty of people who fully support Greg and Pam in all they do for our town.

If you have something to say why don't you all start showing your faces at meetings or volunteering your time to help make this town better.

Todd said...

I live in town, and am not going to hide behind an Anomynous tag. My name is Todd. I find it incredibly irritatating that a town ran by 'conservatives' can assemble and act so swiftly to remove a device that controls speed in order to enhance public saftey... Safety of Adults, Children, and even the safety of those annoying ferrel cats.

The only 'evidence' presented was anecdotal. Melons have barely began to flower, and certainly haven't been harvested... How could the town rule in favor of removing this safety device based upon presumptive 'damage' and speculation??

Another piece of 'evidence' indicates that this poor farmers's wife's back was hurt by the speed-bump... Wouldn't the blame technically fall on the farmer's poor driving skills?

'People kill people, not guns' right?? ;)

Rolling over a speedbump at a reasonable speed is quite a different scenario then nailing it at 25+.... There are far worse divits dips and bumps on country/farm roads in Dorchester County, as we all know.

I find that the broken melon/back ache defense is nothing more than a lackluster excuse to avoid dealing with a tiny bump in the road.

I would gladly opt to endure any number of 'annoyances' in order to preserve the safety of our neighbors, and up until a few days ago, I Thought everyone else felt this way too....

Finally It should be brought to everyone's attention that this same group, that has installed and now removed the speedbump so hastily has completely drug their feet on reserecting our Stars and Stripes.

Yep. This same group is responsible for neglecting to repair and replace the town's American Flag, which fell to the ground ( for the second time in the last year) more than two months ago during a storm... It was down during Memorial Day, and is likely to be down on Independence Day too...

If only a lack of old glory caused irreparable damage to a truck of melons... Sigh...

Get it together Vienna!!

Anonymous said...

Great answer for kids playing in the street "kids will be kids". You're the same one who complains about rapists and thieves. By YOUR reasoning it's ok because "rapists will be rapists" or "thieves will be thieves". TEACH YOUR KID NOT TO PLAY IN THE STREET!!!

Volunteering shouldn't be about getting something back. It should be all about giving.

Anonymous said...

I was always taught to give without expecting things in return and I must say it makes me feel good to give...things like my time or a helping hand. That is part of what I love about Vienna...small town living, helping others...this post is insane and NOT doing anything but stirring up drama. And oh by the way to all those who want to talk about Pam as a medic...she is mighty fine at what she does and I know should something happen to anyone in this town guess who will be there, Pam, volunteering her time...why? Because she cares about people. People should try building others up once in a while instead of anonymously posting jabs.

Anonymous said...

Small town problems. We have not been to that dump of a town since they built the bridge taking Rt. 50 around it.

Anonymous said...

Does millies still have slot machines ?.

Anonymous said...

There are a LOT of people who give with out expecting anything in return. This is a very nice town and community to live in. Like any town, we have our issues. People who are on Town Council shouldn't be one of them. We all have to be open minded to change and what's best for the whole community. Safety should not be debatable. To compare kids will be kids and that's ok, to rapist will be rapist and that's ok is a very far reaching uneducated response! We have a lot of wonderful events in town, From Music on the Nanticoke, Tomatofest, bingo, Ruritan events, fundraisers for our neighbors...we need to keep that in our minds when we come to having to make hard decisions too...it is for the WHOLE COMMUNITY!! Together, not just one or two is what makes our town so great!!

I really think the best solution would be to ban vehicles in town limits. I don't mind parking outside of town and walking home. That way everyone will be safe from all the dangerous cars coming through town and we would be helping reduce emissions. The roads could then be bike paths. Then we could all safely ride our bikes around town looking for other outrageous backwoods crap that needs to be fixed. All these conservatives running driving our poor town into the dirt much like GW Bush did our country. We need a Messiah much like President Obama to step up and run for Mayer so we can get this town moving in the right direction!

Just an FYI to help me sleep at night,
I had zero "agenda" to bringing this to light other then frustration over what I witnessed! To bring awareness over a SPEED Bump that WAS APPROVED by the town commissioners the week before, they didn't like it, but it passed!! So it was installed!! I have heard that "I" have an agenda!! What on earth could I have a agenda for?!? I'm not running for a seat, or Mayor! My only issue is ~~ it was approved for safety reasons to slow down traffic, installed, working, complained about and taken out! Some one needs to stop saying that it was put up with out consent, with out agreement of the town and installed without permission and that's why it was removed! Not true!! We'll see every one at the next town meeting!! Cheers!

Making snarky comments about children's safety, the safety of all of our residents is just plain unacceptable!!Every one making personal attacks, please keep in mind, this isn't personal~~~This is safety first!!The number one issue is how to make this street and all streets safe. So sorry to offend you 1028 but in all actuality all the little Podunk towns on the Eastern Shore are practically indistinguishable and nondescription.

Anonymous said...

I know this is old but the big factor is the speed bump was installed without permission and was installed on a road that received grant money to accommodate farming equipment (Vienna LOVES to take state and federal money...half of which ends up in pockets or "special" projects). The issue is NY fireman Bill as we call him thinks he can whine and cry and get his way. He did the same whine bagging over the elementary school when he didn't get his way. His house is on the market and has been for some time so you'd think he'd have enough sense to not publicly whine about how miserable Vienna is when he can't even sell his house do to the negative image he projects about the town. He is a butt kisser and a snake all at the same time. Is Vienna a screwed up town? Absolutely. Is there an issue with speeders? Absolutely. Is it the farmers? Absolutely not! The farmers are not the issue. It is the young punks that have no respect for the kids of the town. The issue is Dorchester county police are a joke. The issue is ENM is the sheriffs concern so policing doesn't take place in vienna. This is a police issue not a speed bump or farming issue. No one has the right to buy a cheap speed bump and just install it where ever they feel it should be! What kind of idiot doesn't know that?!?!?!
