Delmar Man Arrested for Kidnapping and Car Theft - Laurel

Laurel, DE- Delaware State Police have arrested a Delmar, Delaware man after he stole a vehicle that was still occupied with a one year old child.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:55 p.m., Sunday February 21, 2016 as a 25-year-old male parked his car in a private driveway outside a relative’s residence located in the 32000 block of Bi-State Boulevard. The male stayed in the vehicle with his one year old son while his other 10-year-old son went inside to quickly see an ailing relative. After a few minutes passed, the father went into the house to get the young boy, leaving the one year old in the back seat of the idling car. Within one to two minutes of him going into the house and speaking to his wife and son, the father returned to find the car had been stolen.

Troopers with the assistance from Laurel Police Department, Delmar Police Department, Fruitland Police Department (K9), and Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office (K9) immediately responded to the area after the 9-1-1 call was placed to the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center. A description of the vehicle along with the registration number was broadcast over the radio and within eight minutes of the initial call, the car was located parked and still running approximately two miles from the residence at the intersection of Bi-State Boulevard and Bacons Road by Laurel PD. The child was located still inside the vehicle unharmed, in good condition, and quickly reunited with his parents, but the suspect who stole the vehicle had fled.

Troopers, Deputies, and Officers continued searching the area for the suspect and at 9:30 p.m. Frederick T. Najdek, 30 of Delmar, was located by troopers walking on Dorothy Road just west of Sussex Highway (US13). Through the investigation it was learned the Najdek had taken the vehicle and upon hearing the child crying in the back seat, he parked the vehicle at the intersection and fled on foot. Najdek was transported back to Troop 5 near Bridgeville where he was charged with Kidnapping 2nd, and Theft of a Motor Vehicle. He was arraigned at JP3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $55,000.00 cash bond.

Several important lessons can be learned from this. How many times lately have idling cars been stolen locally? And with a child inside no less. The owner and the car thief should receive equal punishment. One for being corrupt and the other for being stupid.

Why wasn't the parent charged with neglect as well? It is against the law to leave a child this young in the vehicle unattended!

you guys are dumdums. the only person who committed a crime was the guy who stole the car. Everyone, and i mean Everyone, lets their car warm up, and so what if the kid was in the car, its NOT neglect.

307 you're an idiot. Of course the person who stole the car is at fault more, but the father did commit a crime by leaving his baby in the car. Read the article again fool. He was not warming up the car, but he did intentionally leave the baby in it unattended. Again, the car thief was worse and should be shot, but dad needs a good butt kicking to make him learn from his mistake.

I agree with 3:07. This guy was parked in a private driveway of a relative. Sounds like he went in to tell his older kid to hurry up. Most people will not take a 1 year old out of their car seat in that situation. They were not parked in front of a convenience store, the post office, or any other public place.

There was no neglect on the father's part.
