Casino employees at Ocean Downs unhappy with wages

Approximately 100 union workers in discussions with management since October

For the last couple months, employees at Ocean Downs Casino on Racetrack Road have been handing out leaflets in an effort to gain public support for their wage negotiations with the casino.

Currently, about 100 union workers are involved in talks with casino management to improve compensation. Their jobs include bankers, cooks, food and beverage workers, gaming employees, cocktail servers, housekeeping staff, bartenders, cashiers and slot attendants.

Their union contract expired in October and committees have met several times, although no agreement has been finalized.

Something does not make sense to me I guess. If you get a 3% raise every anniversary does that not change you base rate that you get paid?

Unions, the downfall. I bet everyone of these people were crying they needed a job, they get one, WITH raises, now their unhappy. I bet there are a ton of Obama/Omally bumper stickers there.

Easy solution - if you don't like what you're getting paid, fimd a job that will pay you what you think you deserve. If you cn;t find such a job, adjust your expectations.

I started working there when the casino first opened. The wages are in my opinion extremely low for the type of work we did. Although I enjoyed working there very much, I left after finding a MUCH better paying job. I would guess that at least 70% of new employees don't last a year. It is sad.

The union did nothing for the employees. I doubt if the raises covered the union dues.

The union initiated the unrest,just like they did with 2 very large Wicomico County area employers some years back.The union reps were playing both sides.They managed to get the employees to walk out on strike & then acted as though they were working in their best interests.The plants were closed and the union reps got a huge bonus from the corporations.The sad part was that the employees,who were waaay overpaid to begin with were so easily convinced that they were being deprived.

One unmentioned thing about Scalias death is that it means a 4-4 decision and revert to the lower court ruling regarding Mandatory payments for state workers (like done in MD but not the Casino workers, i dont think) that goes to the unions regardless of whether youre in a union or not. The lower court in CA (shockingly) sided with the Teachers Union over the Teachers who sued but the Supreme Court with Scalia would have probably over ruled them and stopped the practice. So the unions will continue to get their money regardless of whether you want to be in a union if you workn in a state that allows it, like MD.

I almost would say the bigger conspiracy in Scalias death would have been the Unions were involved, not Obama..a 5-4 ruling agsinst the unions would have probably cost them millions in lost dues from people who wouldnt pay if they werent forced to do so.

There's a whole lot of people here who have no idea how unions work, what they do, and their overall contribution towards keeping our middle class driving the economy forward. If you've never worked a union job, you don't know jack about it.

From someone who's worked there, there is absolutely no communication between management and line level employees. It's extremely frustrating when someone says one thing and then it's contradicted the next minute. It's funny how everyone is bashing the union. Little do you know, when we opened, we were required to have representation and conveniently it's was a union in the owner's pocket. The workers were smart enough to vote them out and get proper representation. The dues aren't the problem, it's the lack of keeping up with cost of living. For the jobs that these people hold, they should be paid accordingly. For all of you who claim they should find new jobs, how easy is that in the off season? There's an abundance of jobs in the summer and it's quite easy to get one, but when November rolls around, what do you then? Go on unemployment like the rest of the community? It's not option for everyone. Before you judge, walk a mile in their shoes. I think these employees are brave and need to keep fighting for what the deserve.
