And to add insult to injury, the problem is not a food shortage either.
If food was more affordable there would be less poverty.
If people knew what farmers did not harvest, threw out, or did not donate to the hungry you would be appalled.

The waste is unbelievable on the farming and manufacturing side.

This was the same issue and fact during the "great depression". Millions starved when there was no reason to because there was no food shortage then either.

It all comes down to greed. Poverty is a symptom of greed. So the issue is not simply that poverty is growing, the problem is that greed is an issue which makes the symptom of poverty increase.

The second fact contributing to this, which also goes along with greed is that wages are falling or stagnant. Greedy employers, who are thriving, are sucking the life out of their employees, paying less, cutting hours/beneits and then wonder why employees are complaining that their lives suck and they can not survive.

The third reason, which also is greed, was the healthcare tax, which now cost me 1/4 of my gross wages, which also equates to 1/3 of my net wages. yes 30% of my net wages is now mandated to be paid for a service. This additional tax has now put me at a poverty level.

Moving the manufacturing job base overseas has crushed the struggling middle class. These was the only option for a large percentage of non-college educated citizens of this once great nation.
