Killing of Cecil the lion triggers probe by U.S. agency

The killing of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe by American dentist and trophy hunter Walter Palmer is being investigated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to see if it was part of a conspiracy to violate U.S. laws against illegal wildlife trading, a source close to the case said.

The service is probing the killing under the Lacey Act, which bars trading in wildlife that has been illegally killed, transported or sold, the source said on Thursday.

Palmer, whose practice is in suburban Minneapolis, has admitted to killing the 13-year-old lion and tourist attraction, in July. Questions have been raised by the Zimbabwe government and animal conservationists about Cecil's death outside the Hwange National Park, where he was the head of two lion prides.

The best known lion in Zimbabwe is said to have been lured from the park with bait, shot with an arrow, tracked for 40 hours, shot dead with a rifle and then beheaded and skinned.

Cecil was wearing a GPS collar as part of a research project run by Oxford University.

Yet they can't and won't investigate the illegal harvesting of unborn babies.

Little man syndrome. Let's go trick an animal so we can slaughter him and feel good about ourselves.

this whole discussion is crazy. we are supposed to be a free society. if what this man did was legal then it is none of our business. you don't have to like it. we have government agencies breaking laws all over the place and no one cares. yet we gin this up and everybody wants to lynch this guy

I totally disagree with what he did, and I think this guy is a POS, but the fact is, if this had been done less than ten years ago, nothing would have been said. In this age of political correctness, anything you do or say is subject to prosecution. The fact is he followed all the legal procedures, and had an approved guide. The guide should be charged. As for the dentist, he is a pos. Big game hunting just for the purpose of sport needs to be ended.

This guy needs to be Lynch. This did not happen here in the United States. People should understand and respect others custom when they are visiting other countries. But as usual, some Americans think they are privileged and beyond anyone's laws. Hang the dentist high or treat him the way the dentist treated Cecil the Lion.

Walter Palmer needs to have his head cut off and mounted on a wall! That bastxxd for killing that innocent lion. Palmer went to Africa, the lion didn't go to Minneapolis. He killed an icon, and for what? A freaking trophy. WHY?

These animals are getting so rare, and it is people like Palmer that goes around the world and kills innocent animals for the fun of it. What a total jerk and a complete asshxxe. No amount of saying I'm sorry can bring these dead animals he kills back. It is people like him is the reason wildlife is becoming extinct. Keep on and our children aren't even going to know what these animals are and how important wildlife is to all mankind.

Yes it is against the law in order to prevent what happened here. The lion was lured out of a protected zone.
I am not a hunter but I haven't a problem with our hunters around here who hunt to feed their families.
People like this jerk Palmer who hunt just to kill for a trophy are very sick people.
And yes I am sick over the Planned Parenthood tapes.

Not only was the animal lured but Palmer then after killing the lion engaged in the cover up so him or anyone else trying to blame it on the hunting company is nonsense. When he saw the collar on the lion instead of engaging in the cover up he should have immediately called authorities.
